Epic fail on my health & fitness part today. Except that it's because my 17yo asked to hang out tonight. Like told her friends she didn't want to hang out with them because she wanted to hang out with me.

I was all prepared to be good today eating wise. Then the lady in the cafeteria downstairs decided to make peach cobbler. I caved. I also ate the cobbler first and am now eating my salad. Whatever I don't finish today will keep until tomorrow. YOLO! ha. I'm catching up on this thread now and this made me chuckle. I forgot to grab the half of a 7" cheesecake from the office fridge when I left last night, had intended to bring it to my dad. I still have a quarter of it at my house, so idk what I'm going to do with it all now. on my drive in today, I was like fuck it, I'm having cheesecake for breakfast today. what? I have blueberries, too.

I'm not a fan of broccoli, either, but I LOVE Brussels sprouts, which are in the same family. When I make sprouts, they never make it as a side to the dinner table. I gobble them up. I did discover a few years ago that I love Brussels Sprouts roasted. I always hated them, and many other cooked veggies. My mother and grandmother’s preferred method of cooking vegetables was to boil them to death into a horrible, weird consistency. So if I ate any vegetables at all, they were typically raw. It was an eye opener to discover that a lot of vegetables could be cooked in an appetizing way. my mom's not allowed to cook us veggies, ever. unless it's something that is supposed to be boiled to death and smashed, like potatoes. if she's hosting something, we bring the veggie sides. lol... here's another option to roasting sprouts, a little less healthy, but good for a treat - trim/halve the sprouts and parboil them. while that's going, dice some pancetta and cook over medium heat. once you've got enough fat to be able to toss in the sprouts, so do. toss the pan together and finish cooking, season with sea salt/fresh cracked pepper to taste. first time I ever did this was a Thanksgiving. five of us killed two pounds of sprouts, with everything else that was on the table. enjoy

DH hates the smell of cooked broccoli so much that we're not allowed to cook it in the house unless he'll be gone a full 24 hours afterwards. ha. he'd be moving out of my house.

My DH will eat broccoli, but he can't stand cauliflower. And he likes to tell me how cauliflower has no nutritional value and is like eating air. He's wrong on so many levels. And I buy the frozen mixed veggies with cauliflower anyway. He eats it, but only grudgingly.

Sneak in some mashed or riced cauliflower in a dish? Trader Joe's has a yummy riced cauliflower stir fry (don't have it in front of me so don't know the nutritional values). If I make my spiced lentils for dinner I've taken to serving it over plain riced cauliflower instead of basmati rice.

I found a recipe on skinny taste for roasted cauliflower that I want to try with both cauliflower and broccoli. ETA: I could also live on zucchini and yellow squash. I practically do in the summer.

I’ve been planning to sneak riced cauliflower into my rotation—is it similar enough to rice that I’ll get away with it?

I mean, it's not exact, but since it's not giant chunks of cauliflower it shouldn't be an overwhelming flavor. Normal plain rice is pretty much just an absorber for other food so I think it's a simple switch. You can also season it however you'd like. I serve it plain with my lentils because they already have cumin, curry powder, chili powder, cayenne pepper, and dried cilantro. Flavor town, yo.

I need to go to Trader Joe's. I hear they have great stuff that's healthy. But it's so far away. I need one closer to home or work.

I didn't eat enough yesterday. I could feel it in my energy levels. Compensated with coffee and then ended up being awake until the wee hours. All for a 6-10pm grad school class. Today was a much better start: chopped yellow bell pepper, red onion, celery, scallions, blueberries, and chicken breast all cooked up in some olive oil and served over steamed (not canned) green beans. Physical activity will consist of multiple trips up and down the stairs, body weight squats, and wall pushups.

I don't usually participate in this thread, but I had a workout question that I thought I might get a good response here.
I am doing a month long HIIT/rotation of body weight workouts plus some cardio. Today's workout is supposed to be run a mile for time. I can't run outside today (seriously, I'm pretty hardcore, but with 30 Mph winds, windchills at -11 and falling, not to mention a foot of snow on the ground, it isn't going to happen). I don't have a treadmill. I do have a recumbent bike. Would 3 miles on the bike with resistance be a good substitute? What else could I substitute for that work out?

Well, cycling isn’t a full body cardio as running is. Also, if it’s for time, that’s not comparable. Do you mean it’s a sprint? That’s different than for time.
What’s the goal with time? That would help me understand and be better able to answer.

I'm not sure on the goal of for time. My guess is that it gives you a goal you shoot for. A mile for time isn't full speed, but it is going pretty hard. This is the first week and I will definitely have to do the same substitute the next week, and more than likely the week after. I doubt I would be comfortable running something for time outside unless it is in the 30s.

muttleynfelix, I think it depends on your goal. Do you want to know what your mile time is so you can improve it? Then no, cycling won't work. Do you just want to get a strenuous workout in? Then yes, go ahead and substitute cycling since it's winter and running outside sucks right now. Just make sure to crank the resistance up to whatever is difficult for you. Any time I've done cycling, my issue has always been that I don't crank the resistance high enough, because "it's so hard!" said in my most whiny voice

Catching up ... DH makes Belgian waffles once per week, pancakes once per week, french toast once per week; the other days we have either bagels, English muffins, or hashbrowns. Knee Deep in Water Chloe all that stuff is super high carb/high calorie. Plus, you don't eat those (very delicious!) things plain, I'm guessing you add maple syrup/jam/honey too. Would your DH agree to do EITHER waffles OR pancakes OR French toast once a week? Or else do TWO of those items per week instead of all three? IOW rotate them over two weeks, twice a week, rather than having all of them once a week. Other option/suggestion, get Joseph's sugar free maple (flavored) syrup. I bought that on Iggy's suggestion. I use it to flavor my Greek yoghurt. DH and I have been talking about the Mediterranean diet. We definitely eat too much meat / protein, especially DH.
Last week I cracked and asked DH to make oatmeal. I LOVE it and really missed it. I've started eating it again occasionally.

I sinned yesterday!!! I had my first croissant since June yesterday at Job 2 (they bake them fresh). I was amazed, I didn't gain any weight! Still holding at 61.5 kilos (135 lbs) instead of the goal of 60 kilos (132 lbs). At this point I think I would be happy to hit 60.9 kilos and consider it done. At least I haven't gained anything! But I am finding it very hard to refuse myself after 7 months of total deprivation. I just try to compensate for it.
I also started eating half a small, tart apple every other day. I really missed apples and berries are super expensive at this time of year, and they rot too quickly.
I found mini-pizzas at the supermarket, 58 carbs for a mini-pizza (the size of a shoe). I had one last week and one this week. It was a crap supermarket pizza but it tasted AMAZING!!! Again, I didn't gain any weight.
I'm still planning to start actively exercising once my play is over but for now I just need to get through the next three weeks. I AM eating more net carbs (60 carbs per day instead of 20 some days?) but I eat them at breakfast or lunch, never at dinner.
Also DS3 will bring me more of the high-protein/low carb bread when he comes home to see my play.

Don't the handles on the recumbent bike move? If so, I'd say so. At the end of the day any movement is better than none.

I am on the stridekick challenges still (thank you ), and finally up to focusing on some stuff again. Started this year with 15lbs to go. Dropped 6 quickly with cutting out junk and now it's to the hard part. These last 9 are going to take some work. I have been getting in my steps every day. Usually just in my house, haha! 5 miles around the living room is getting old. I need warm weather:) And I'm tracking my food in Fitbit too. Alcohol is my weakness. Beers or wine at night is way too much of a habit. I like LaCroix so trying to find a flavor that will sub for me. It's a lot cheaper than alcohol too

Oh, oatmeal makes the rotation every other week or so.
Um, I don't know what to do with DH and his breakfasts. We've been doing this for over ten years. He loves breakfast. I may have more luck cutting out dinner.

A group of us went out to celebrate the success of our first speaker event. It was amazing. But anyway, I was good and had one glass of pinot noir and a beet salad. The calamari or a margherita pizza were looking good. Yay me.

Can you skip his breakfasts and have something else instead? Or have a heart to heart about how important it is to you to change your diet and maybe leave the big breakfasts to a weekend treat? That could be the compromise.

Feburary is going to be focused on weight lifting instead of steps. I'll still participate in the step challenge, but I'm not going to be as big a contender as I am now. I still have flab on my arms and I really want to get rid of most of it.

This week was a fail. 158.5 (up .5 from last week). I am not discouraged. It is no-one's fault but my own. I did not get on the treadmill Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday - that is too many rest days. I did do upper body weights Tuesday. I think I should start writing down what I eat in a journal. Just so I can see the amount of food I am eating. One win is I have cut back on salting my food. I am a salt-aholic. I have never had blood pressure issues but that doesn't mean I should go crazy with the stuff. I will continue this path with some tweaks and I know I will begin to see changes in my body. My main focus is increasing my strength and losing the belly fat through healthy eating and exercise. I will get there.
