I've been thinking of giving up alcohol for a while now. I cut way back over the last 8-9 months. What was a daily habit dropped to just a few times a week, and less on the days I did consume. After my divorce I was listening to Buddhist podcasts, and some talked about how things that dull your senses don't allow you to grow. I've been listening to weight loss podcasts too, and they say a similar thing about overeating. That you hurt yourself and perpetuate an unhealthy cycle when you put something in your body to avoid feeling emotions. I know at the height of my working out that when I exercise regularly I don't ever feel the "need" to consume alcohol, and that exercise has always made me feel better about any situation than a drink ever did. I had some wine on my birthday, and the sleep I got that night was absolutely awful. I went from waking 1-2 times a night to 5 times, and my time awake was 3-4 times higher. I also found that even one drink dulls my ability to play my cello. My fingers don't move as fast or with as much coordination. It also makes it difficult for me to run the next morning. So plenty of reasons- spiritual, health, music etc. Has anyone else given up drinking? I've always thought of it as such an extreme thing to do. I didn't have any champagne this year for New Years and didn't miss it at all. I have been thinking about this for awhile. Nightly drinks have become too much of a habit. For many reasons I think it's probably best for me to scale it back considerably. Those podcasts sound interesting - could you share what they are? Yup. The buddhist podcast is called Secular Buddhism with Noah Rasheta. I like the earlier stuff he did, but stopped listening when he lost his job and started to try to use the podcast to make money. But I found the earlier stuff was really worthwhile. Around this time I was also listening to The Life Coach School Podcast with Brooke Castillo. She has some good stuff to say, but sometimes gets on my nerves (I'm not sure why). She actually coached the next two ladies I listen to. The first is Losing 100 pounds with phit-n-phat. I really like the way Corrine looks at weight loss as an emotional thing. Fix the mind, then you can address the mental blocks that keep you from exercise or cause overeating. There is no calorie counting (but you can do that if you want). She encourages small steps that build over time. She is my favorite podcast right now. The other lady I just started listening to. Take a Break from Drinking with Rachel Hart. She's not set up to work with alcoholics, but wants to work with people without an addiction who want to stop drinking.

I got new running shoes yesterday. Also got some inserts, socks, and a new sports bra. I've never been fitted for shoes before, and I really like how these feel. I think it was worth it to not worry about price, but focus on fit. I finally got my butt out of bed before work this morning, and got moving. I didn't go far- just about a mile and a half, but it beats the weeks (months) where I haven't done anything. I'm trying to start slow again. I'm going to get out there every day and walk a little bit with my dogs. Most days I'm also going to try to run some too. As I feel like I want to do more I will.
My other small change is eating vegetables at lunch and dinner. I've been getting these vegetable stir fry packs at the store. I like them because they have a lot of different stuff so it is easier than getting 4-5 things and some goes bad. Plus they are easy to make. No prep, and they cook quickly.
I'm going to buy more sports bras today. I have to get the ones with underwire, and I really like the one I just got over the ones I've been wearing. So looking for more ways to feel good about working out.

Put them in order from easiest to hardest and cut them out one or two at a time. As far as workouts, find something you like to do and do it. Go at your own pace. Add a little more after the workout isn't doing as much for you anymore. Eventually you'll be kicking ass and taking names!

Been eating reeeeally badly lately, but I got a lot of steps in the past 2 days trying some birdwatching (in frigging subarctic temperatures, brr) Hoping to eat lightly today because I'm going to Cheesecake factory for dinner tonight, but luckily they have a good skinny menu. I'm disappointed I haven't kept consistently dropping weight (slowly but it had been consistent), so I'm going to try really hard to reign in the snacking. :/

So my week wasn't perfect. I did eat really well, for the most part. I managed to lose 2 pounds. My problem is exercising. I have to be to work by 7:00 AM every day, and I have a 45 minute commute, so I am generally up early. I try to go to bed by 9:30. But by the time I have a chance to work out I am exhausted. The baby goes to bed between 7:00 - 7:30, and that would be the perfect time to do a Jillian Michaels workout or something. But I just crash. Getting up earlier isn't an option. Not sure how to motivate myself to do it when I'm so tired? I feel like if I got started I would be fine...

I have a private ice skating lesson set up for Saturday. I picked this instructor because she didn't have a bunch of medals listed under her name and said she taught beginning skate to ALL ages. When I called her she said she worked mostly with adults and that we'd do a lot off the ice to start and she'd focus on safety. So I probably won't be her worst student ever! I think she started skating as an adult.
Last night I got dh and ds to try the other martial arts studio. Neither of them wanted to go to the point that I almost called it off. We watched the first half of ds' class and could tell he was having fun. Then dh and I's class (which was armed--because I knew dh would like that) and toward the end of it dh and I were working together, I thought he was laughing at me, and he said, no I'm just smiling--you probably don't see it very often. When we got in the car both of them said they were surprised how much they enjoyed it and that they want to come back.
This is a totally different style than the other place. The other place is contemporary a lot of cardio, sit ups/push ups, punch/kick combos, and this place is a traditional studio, explained the history, explained what the Japanese words they said meant, focused on a foundation (of hitting each other with sticks!) So not a huge workout last night, but if we stick with it it could be. Although the time with dh would be worth so much more than just a workout.

Similarly, with music, the people who teach the best may not be the most accomplished performance wise. You can try it for a while and then decide if you want someone else.

I didn't have any champagne this year for New Years and didn't miss it at all. I did. I have not had any alcohol in 325 days. I didn't do it as a weight loss strategy, more of a save my life strategy , but it has definitely helped with the weight loss. I didn't drink on New Years either but that's because I was sick on the couch. I drink seltzer and water steeped with tea now. I am also starting to look into making mocktails. I found one for a Cranberry Moscow Mule. It was pretty good. I have also taken to drinking OJ and ginger ale, which is unusual as I really don't like OJ. Eh, I was sick. I did a 3 mile walk today and am still walking around while on here although I am thinking about going to shove 2 slices of pizza in the toaster oven. I'm a little hungry. Then a shower and a nap before I go to work.

My total for my 1st week is 5 days of exercise and 6.5 days of vitamins. I forgot my afternoon pills one day.
I have no idea on the weight part. I'll have to see if I can figure out where I started. I tend to gain & lose the same couple of pounds so I will have to figure out where I was in the gain/lose cycle.

I did well all day yesterday.... and then inhaled a bunch of peanut butter cookies and crab mac and cheese at dinner. Because AF. (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it) Good thing is now almost all the cookies are gone, so less temptation is around. Did yoga this morning and packed myself a good lunch and snacks. I can do this!

Finally looking at my numbers for last week. Not good. This week is worse, so I’m hoping to salvage some of it. Lots of emotional eating on my part.

today started badly, as DS woke up around 3:30am and tossed and turned, wanted water, etc. And I didn't fall back to sleep until after 4:30, so no morning workout. My eating has not been great but not horrible either - oatmeal and tea for breakfast, ham and cheese sandwich and Sun Chips for lunch. I doubt I'll eat much else today - I'm beyond stressed so that usually means a drop in appetite.

I don't know what's going on with me, but all I want to do is EAT. I ate breakfast (and a bigger one than normal) about 1.5 hours ago, and I'm already thinking of what snack I should have. I've been like this for the last few days too.
Tomorrow (yes, Saturday) I have a work event. Which should help with my step count, but means it's unlikely I'll get an actual workout in. It's going to be 50 here tomorrow, though, so I might try to get an outdoor walk in after my event. I'm excited for the nicer weather, I just wish I didn't have to work through the first nice day we've had in weeks!

So I was looking at my records and I've basically lost 9 pounds over the last 7 months. The doctors office records show steadier progress which is kind of funny, but I'm getting a little disheartened. So it was basically 20+ pounds in 4 months and then totally stalled out.
I'm tracking my food and staying in 1200-1400 calories a day, my exercise has increased a ton over the last 3 weeks. Not up to 150 minutes a week yet, but still consistent regular movement. I try not to look at end goals too much, but if I just go off of bmi calculators I have 30 pounds to lose to not be overweight, and potentially 50 total pounds to lose to be "at goal" weight.
I feel good, and in general that is what is most important to me. But I'd also really like to be under that 25 bmi again. I'm contemplating cutting out carbs for a bit. I don't love the idea of it, but I'm not sure what else to do either. I don't have another appointment with my doc for about a month to get her take on it.

I leave about 10 of 6 so I can get to work at 6:30 and then I'm home with both kids a little before 5. They go to bed at 7:30 but it's often closer to 7:45. DH and I have been doing Jillian Michaels workouts after they go to bed. Before kids I used to be crazy into fitness but had not worked out reliably the first 5 years after kids. We've been doing this 4x a week (started out 3x at first) for almost 2 years now. I've maintained my weight but got my abs back and everything! DH lost almost 30lbs, because, well, MEN! and is now 6'1", 155lbs . I think soon we will have to start working out before they go to bed and they will just have to deal. Sometimes we do that on the weekends. My 4.5 year old is going to be a workout video pro soon, sometimes she will do a few mins with us. So ... I think once you get started you will want to continue. I get mad at myself if we miss a day and we really try to keep each other motivated. One thing though is when we started my kids were 2 and 5. I think I just did not have the extra energy when they were younger. So good luck, please try to beat me by starting now!

Keep trying things, as long as you don't go overboard/dangerous, until you find what works for you. Maybe a little bit of weights could help, too. Good luck, and keep up the good work!

I get up early to work out. I've tried doing it at night and I have even less motivation and energy then than in the morning.

It's really more to maintain and keep the motivation going. I was hoping it would be the jolt to get things moving quicker though. I was thinking I need to add in some kettle bells to balance things out and get me up to that 150 minutes so I'll see if I can make that happen this weekend. I'm planning on taking the kids swimming tonight, martial arts class tomorrow morning, ice skating lesson tomorrow afternoon and stupid amounts of homework so I'm not sure that I'll have anything left in me, but I can try. I'm okay with my progress so far. I guess even if I keep up this 1.25 loss per month I'd get there in 3.5 years. Depressing, but not as bad as I thought it was. I'd never have to worry about someone commenting on my weight loss.

A straight up workout routine with less pausing will work off more calories. Even with my kettlebell workout dvd, I fast forward through the explanations, because I know what I'm doing by now and it's just wasted time that I'm not exercising. Not trying to discourage you, because any new interest that makes physical activity fun for you is awesome, but I wouldn't expect too much weight loss from them.

I'm okay with my progress so far. I guess even if I keep up this 1.25 loss per month I'd get there in 3.5 years. Depressing, but not as bad as I thought it was. I'd never have to worry about someone commenting on my weight loss. Those classes sound great, and I'm sure involve extra exercise, but keep in mind, they also include a lot of downtime. Agreed--I don't do a dvd on the bells, just what I remember from classes I took a few years ago in my basement. Ice skating won't be any workout for the foreseeable future. I can't say that I'm going for what most people would call workouts. My goal is to make sure I'm not completely sedentary and building in routines that could continue easily for years to come. In the summer that is pretty easy to do, but I sat in the doctors office in December and could barely come up with 1 thing a week I was doing that could be considered active for any length of time. I'm away from home too much to say I have to go to the gym multiple times a week, so I have to work this in as a family activity that is fun for the kids. I think I'm going more for what would be similar to people who count steps, without doing activities that count steps. So even more proof that it won't help me lose weight, which is okay. I think I'll give it till the end of this month to see what if anything is happening and decide from there what I want to try next.

I just need to say this out loud, and this is really the only place I can say it without having someone roll their eyes at me or imply I'm an idiot or something. If I say it out loud, I'm hoping I can start dealing with it.
I don't have a weight problem. I have an eating problem--a food relationship problem. I cannot not eat something when I can see it. It's ridiculous. If I would just stay under 1700 calories consumed per day I wouldn't feel so icky. I need to change my relationship with food. I need to not use food as a feeling healer. I need to not eat when I'm bored. I need to not eat because I know it will taste good and I'll make up for it later because I never make up for it later. I need to use food as an energy source and the occasional social necessity and nothing else.

I have the same problem. I don't think you're an idiot.

Me too. I can't have that stuff in the house, and I can't watch commercials because they immediately make me run out and buy the stuff.

Chloe--I so get it. That eating problem became a weight problem for me so I think it's genius to deal with it the way you are.
I survived my ice skating lesson! There really was no comparison to the last time I got on the ice. Because I could, you know...get on the ice without fear of imminent death. Which I take as proof of huge improvement in core strength and balance. I think the instructor thought I was going to progress farther faster than I did, and I really had to stick to the basics but I was so impressed with myself. I should be able to handle a group class so I'll practice what I learned for a few weeks and see what the schedule looks like when we're ready to sign up the kids again and see if I can get us into something that times out well.

Half way through my 6 week challenge and i am down 3.8 pounds and...
11.5 inches!
If I were relying on the scale to measure progress, I would be pissed. such a deceitful thing!
I have been dealing with cramps, major lower back pain and a sinus/ ear infection this past week. Ugh. I have had minimal workouts and my food has been on plan except for nipping in to some dark chocolate. Food is really what makes the difference! You can out run your fork.
Hoping to see some great progress this week once I get back on my BC tomorrow and TOM disappears.

Great job on the inches lost sarcasticgirl!
This week went pretty well. I made it to the gym twice. I had every intention of going today to make it three times, but a big storm came in, and who wants to go out in a blizzard? Got 72,000 steps in for the week. Weight is the same.
I'm debating doing the low-carb thing again, but with a two week limit. I did it around this time last year and lost 7-8 pounds in two weeks. Lots of bacon, but no sweets. Thinking, thinking...
Have a great week everyone!
