One note on churches with nursery/Sunday school during the service: .... Young families are the lifeblood of churches- all churches say they want them but they need to understand the needs of babies and small children, and their parents. Another note on church nurseries - the system and operation is often designed by older men (and sometimes women) who don't understand the concerns of young parents. Yes the church has a nursery, but it may be missing the mark when it comes to what younger parents are looking for. When we moved back to Florida we visited several churches and found that they had nurseries, but that there were problems with the details of how the nursery operated. Including: 1) Many were staffed entirely by volunteers. The volunteers had no background checks or training requirements so the person you hand your little guy to may be "nice" but you have no idea if this person is a sex offender, will shake him when he cries, etc. That also meant that some Sundays there were three volunteers to watch the three kids in the nursery and other Sundays there was one volunteer to keep an eye on the 12 kids that showed up that day. 2) Churches have historically had issues with how to handle sex offenders. One of the prominent local churches who has one of the most popular day cares in town just about had a revolt when they fired an employee 3 years ago. A new pastor discovered that the employee - who was much loved and directly interacted with and supervised children of various ages at church activities - was a convicted sex offender. Apparently, he moved to the area after his sentence years ago and the church gave him a second chance... without telling any of the parents. When the new pastor discovered this, the pastor fired the employee; half the church members (mostly the older ones without kids) were outraged and felt it was unChristian not to trust that he had repented and that he should be given a second chance. This was one of the churches we liked, had attended multiple services there and almost joined so this was a reality check for us on how these issues were viewed. 3) In general, the nurseries are there to prevent other congregants from being disturbed, not to necessarily provide a nice place or enrich kids. Is that a huge deal to "warehouse" a child for an hour a week? Probably not. But it's also not something that is appealing to young parents.

I don't think Virgil is referring to the priests/ministers as the "high dignitary" one is presenting themselves to at church. I think he is referring to God. if God is everywhere, that means he's already seen a mother nurse (and poop and shower and have sex and give birth), so I don't think he'd mind her feeding her child while listening to The Word. Soooooooooooooooooo much

As far as Sunday school goes if they are sending Gwen off to Sunday school then I expect her to be "educated". She has no idea who half the people are in the Bible, can't tell me anything about Jesus and I had to explain to her what the Eucharist is.
I don't expect her to be a Bible scholar but she should at least be able to tell me something after all this time. When I asked her what do they do and she goes "Hand us a coloring book and tell us to go color".
At first I thought she was exaggerating but I listened in on a few sessions while keeping Abby occupied. Yeah that's pretty much all they do.
Coloring is easy and keepts them quiet. Which is fine if all you want is the kid to be out of your hair I send Gwen to church for a particular reason.
I really wish that church would actually talk to people like me and DH about what we would like to see since we are the demographic they are trying to reach. Instead their solution is "nachos and bingo!" Yeah that's going to attract a lot of Gen X-ers and millienials all right.

Instead their solution is "nachos and bingo!" Yeah that's going to attract a lot of Gen X-ers and millienials all right. At most churches the Sunday school teachers are volunteers, too. My oldest son was such a handful that I volunteered to be a Sunday school teacher for several years because I couldn't in good conscience foist that sort of Terror on a poor, unsuspecting volunteer stranger... But from my experience, the volunteer teachers are provided no training and little support. There may be a "curriculum" but again, it is often wildly unsuited to the age of kid or just plain bad. I remember my first lesson was supposed to be about Ruth. Yes, that's a wonderful example of loyalty, caring and love, but these were four-five year olds and the story is, well, to put it charitably - boring as heck. So I tossed that lesson plan. We talked about Daniel in the lion's den, acting it out with some of the kids roaring, etc. The next week I again tossed the plan and we talked about Joseph's coat of many colors; we cut out paper grocery bags in the shape of a vest the kids could wear and we decorated them with crayons, stickers, glitter, etc. Very fun and the kids liked wearing their coats home. No idea if the church leadership liked it or even knew I wasn't following the plans but we all had fun and I think the kids learned more than they would have if I'd sat in front, told the story of Ruth and then handed them the coloring page with a picture of Ruth to color. So if I'd been a convicted child beater who spent each hour swearing at the kids and showing porn, I'm not sure if anybody would have known. Comforting, huh?

I don't attend church often. One time I went with my sister to her church (same religion as me) back in the mid to late 70's. A woman sitting on the first row, with very large sagging boobs, whips them both out at the same time and nursed her 1-2 yr old baby on one breast and a 5-6 yr old on the other. No blanket or attempt to be discrete. It was not attractive. She clearly knew she'd be at church for a period of time, but made no plans for this type situation. A small glassed in room was available at the back, but she stayed where she was. The older child kept talking a 'playing' with her boobs, while he nursed. It was very distracting. It was the 1st time I'd seen this done. I was less than impressed. Personally, I think 5-6 yrs old is too old to still be nursing unless you're really that destitute. In which case, some discretion should be used. I nursed and supplemented. I was never very successful nursing in a public area, even if I was covered. that is a WHOLE other issue....

were you wearing them on your boobs? You would think so, but...no. Actually I was asked to remove myself from a Russian Orthodox church and a monastery in New York state. Damned heathen wearing men's clothing and all that. I know which one you mean. Never seen that in any churches we've gone to.

My wife ran the Sunday school program for a few years. I taught a few times. Our Liturgy is long and boring for children (Russian Orthodox). We would have the children take communion before the adults then leave for Sunday school to give them more time, It wasn't nursery school. After Liturgy the adults would have some time to socialize before the children came into the hall. On religious holidays, and there are many Saints days on our calendar, they'd tell us what they learned. Usually more then I did. I grew up Lutheran. My wife grew up Russian Orthodox. Her Baba, grandmother, told her to marry a nice Orthodox boy.

In pa anyone volunteering with children need to have their clearances now... EVERYONE.
The church a friend homeschooler's husband preaches at have those flashing light things like if you are waiting on a table at a restaurant, you get one if your kid is in nursery and if it goes off you need to go to them.

Ok. Another serious question here. After asking my questions, you all were kind enough to respond. I've seen a couple of people say there are some babies who simply will not take a bottle. So what happens to those babies if the mother is unable to breastfeed for whatever reason. How do they get nourishment? I remember there used to be wetnurses for the rich people, but I've not heard of anyone doing that lately. They will take a bottle eventually, but there will be screaming and crying until they do, which is usually for hours. They might also reverse cycle which is when they do most of their feeding at night when mom is home and sleep more during the day. That's fun. My son takes a bottle but has never been a huge fan so there would be a lot of fussing and wasted milk. He also had phases where he wouldn't eat in public at all, even breastfeeding had to be done in a quiet room or he would get too distracted. I just had to keep outings short unless we were going somewhere that would have a room where we could nurse. Outside of people's homes, Nordstrom is the only place I have found with a nice room for nursing. I wish more public places would add this. I don't always want to go hide to nurse, but sometimes it's a nice option.

1. Eating is elective? There are some kids who absolutely will not take a bottle. 2. If the queen told me i couldnt' breastfeed in her presence, i would honor it. I honor the requests of people who are hosting me. It doesn't mean taht i won't resent her or think she's wrong. That is what is key to me. It is the backlash that everyone wants to start that pisses me off. I breastfed but would never have considered doing it publicly. It was no big deal to plan feedings around outings. To each their own. If someone is discreet about breastfeeding I can see it. But for the women that just pop their boobs out? I disagree with that. Serious question...what was your schedule like and how long did your nurse your kids? I'm trying to figure out how to not nurse in public for 6-12 months and still get anything done.

No. It's a local weekly paper that allows anonymous submissions. Fake news. Not sure it can be called fake news. I remember long ago our paper had a sound off column. People sounded off on things ilike "to the person in the black SUV whose kids were not wearing seat belts I hope you didn't have to make a sudden stop and injure your children" Now, I didn't read other posts on the sight but that's my take on it.

Why the F*** does everything have to be about politics for some people? It's getting so old. I think I'm going to start relating every topic to astrophysics from now on...or chickens.

Do chickens. Sounds like more fun.
ETA: I'll give you style points if you make up fake stories to go with your point. Aka 'this reminds me of the time when Q-tip was five days old and got her foot stuck in a board...' .
