I’ve had good luck finding old cast iron pans at yard/garage sales as well as estate sales. I found a set of graduated cast iron skillets at a yard sale for under $10! I snapped those babies up quickly. I’m still looking for a 12 in one though.

I kept custody of my EX MIL's cast iron skillet. She gave it to me so I felt it was ok to keep it. Have no clue how old it is but I've had it for 54 yrs now and I know she had it for a long time. Sucker weighs a ton but I still use it. Nothing beats a good ole cast iron skillet.

One of the reasons the vintage cast iron pans are desirable is that they are significantly lighter than the modern cast iron. The vintage pans were more finely cast and milled, so they are lighter than the new, commonly available CI pans. So hang on to your good old pan; it probably cooks better than the new ones and it's lighter, too.

Today has been a big money day... wasted it on eating out, liquor, and a handgun (well, the handgun hasn't been picked out yet, but a dollar limit has been set). Son's 21st birthday, so he's getting the stuff he couldn't before, lol. Oh, and two lottery tickets. Fortunately he knows those are a waste of money, but we did get over $4 worth of conversation about lotteries, buying castles/chateaux/whatever in foreign lands, etc. He's not a big talker, so money well spent.

I called for the stuffed crust. but it only came in large and costs $23!! F that! LOL when I get there. I saw the $5 each flyer. I asked about it. I quickly changed my order to add the BBQ boneless wings! now my total order for medium pan 2 topping with Boneless wings came out to $14!!!

The saga of Bridezilla's wedding in Charleston continues. This is my nephew's fiancee. Both families live in Charlotte but the wedding MUST be in Charleston. She chose a date in early March, which I assume was the earliest she could get it, but that pretty much rules out driving for me (from Kansas City)- don't want to gamble on hazardous driving conditions even though I know darn well that bad weather will mess up flying, too. Soooo... have already paid $600 for airfare. Charlotte would have been a nonstop, Charleston isn't, so I'm leaving early Thursday (and staying overnight in an airport hotel because the flight is insanely early) because I want to make sure I'm there for the rehearsal dinner Friday night. Yesterday I heard from SIL about hotels. They're trying to reserve a block of rooms at a "preferred" rate and so far haven't been able to do any better than $270/night for a Hilton Garden Inn. I got on the Hilton site and booked the 3 nights for $858 all-in . I can cancel up to 5 days in advance so if I change my mind or they get a better deal, I can go elsewhere. I feel worse for my nieces and nephews- they're married with small children and most are close to Charlotte or would have been able to stay with family there. Many will be driving in from wherever they are, typically 2-3 hours away. I know I could stay home but this is family. Dad is 87 and won't live forever and I do enjoy weddings (heck of a lot better than funerals). I'm glad I can do it but already I'm not thrilled with my new niece by marriage. Her last post on FB was pondering what kind of Halloween costume to get for their dog. Talk about wasting money!!!

I wouldn't do it but just me. Don't have family I would walk across the road for, so there's that.
I haven't spent anything for 2 days. Haven't been out of the house. Doing my puzzle and routine things, laundry, trash out, etc. Likely work on some books today, need to start going through things and getting ready for taxes, will be here before we know it.
Then working on my puzzle again It's raining and 48 out so not really conducive to running around. We may go to the city tomorrow.

Had a minor medical procedure that cost me $2586 (my deductible is 2500 then the usual 20% of the remainder). Not sure that it was a waste of money but not real happy about having to spend it.
Going to lunch tomorrow with my BFF and then we are headed to the outlets for some new clothes. I refuse to feel guilty about it...

I didn't realize it would cost so much to have a couple of polyps removed but I know it could have turned into cancer down the road so best to take care of it now. Prevention is the best medicine IMHO.

Signing the boys up for basketball. I'm sure they'll wind up complaining about having to go, but they assure me they want to do basketball. For now.

My sister used to live on Hilton Head so I've been there before. I did make a day trip to Charleston once, while visiting family in Simpsonville, but I've got a cruise out of Cabo San Lucas that leaves the weekend after the wedding so I HAVE to be back home for that flight and don't want to cut it too close. Thanks for the idea, and I do plan to explore Charleston while I'm there. I need to save what's left of my travel budget for a trip to Hawaii planned in late 2019.

I just paid off my week long tour to the all dressed up for Christmas plantations in La, Ms and New Orleans. Up next is to put the down payment on the 16 day trip to Ireland and Scotland in 2019. After that in Febr. is a trip to Fla. to visit family. The Ireland trip will blow my 2019 travel budget. I forgot to add on a trip to Nebraska for Christmas. Counting the 3 days at the Holiday Inn, it's going to cost me about $750. So, I'm right there with you Athena.

I'm sure it's not always easy, but I think it's great you two ladies are getting out there and doing things.

I'm sure it's not always easy, but I think it's great you two ladies are getting out there and doing things. Thanks! It comes naturally to me- I traveled on my own before I was married and also did a lot on business. If the choice is between traveling solo and staying home, I'll travel solo.

So.... no one else has wasted money in 2019? I took my granddaughter to Chicago last October when she was 4; she's now 5 and we went again in May, this time for 2 nights, and had a great time. When I visited last month she asked tactfully when we'd go again. I hemmed and hawed because I'm already committed to some steep travel expenses for upcoming trips (although I'm still staying under a 3.5% withdrawal rate and have funded all but the balance due on the March Galapagos trip). Then I gave myself a mental slap upside the head. Life is short. The memories are precious. A trip to Chicago isn't going to jeopardize my retirement. So, I burned some AA miles to get there and back and booked the Hilton O'Hare because she LOVES watching the action at the airport from our room across the street. I had only enough points for one free night but oh, well.. paid for the second night. Then I discovered that it was a single bed and that a room guaranteeing a runway view was an "upgrade". So, OK, I booked one with 2 beds and a runway view. Suddenly it was a "premium reward" at 128,000 points/night instead of 55,000. The imbedded cost of buying the extra points plus paying for the second night was only slightly below the cost of just paying for 2 nights. So that's what I did. I will NOT tell her frugal parents what it cost. And this is one reason DH and I pretty much gave up on Hilton years ago- allowing hotels to set exorbitant "premium reward" levels for pretty ordinary rooms really devalued the points.

I have pretty much given up on using points for anything. These days, everything goes on our Costco card and we get the cash back. My last 2 wastes of money were goofs on my part. When we travel, anything over 2 weeks it is cheaper to do 2 one way car rentals. Pick up car in Bellingham, at SEA. Reverse the practice when we get home. For some reason, our last trip had us returning our car to Bellingham. I tried to change it, but after spending 90 minutes of my life on the phone trying to pay the surcharge for the drop fee, I finally said f&$# it, and got a new reservation and ate the old one. $50. Second goof, we were meeting my old boss and friends in Vancouver....staying overnight. Vancouver, convention area hotels were $450+/night. I went to Hotwire to see what I could find and found one at $250/night. I bought it, and got snagged by the damned resort fees that got tacked on at the very end. I normally catch those. Our hotel wound up costing an extra $70.

I have pretty much given up on using points for anything. These days, everything goes on our Costco card and we get the cash back. My "go-to" card is a Fidelity Visa- 2% cash back on everything. Having collected the sign-on bonus for my AA MC last year, I'm dropping it when it renews and will probably go for one of the generic "reward points" cards. Yeah, those resort fees are extortion. Between the devaluation of reward programs and all the junk fees that hotels apply, it's not surprising that many of us are going with Airbnb for longer stays. I'm so grateful DH and I were able to enjoy many of the major Hiltons in Europe on reward stays before they started calling all their reward rooms "premium", at 300,000 points per night.

Last waste of money was not requesting the $7 prepaid label for items I was returning. I went to the UPS store and it was $18! I should have said no thanks and walked out. I was still mentally exhausted from the huge anniversary party for my in laws.
I've been pretty successful using Marriott, IHG and Southwest points. I have a Marriott card we try to churn most stuff through.
