Well, not really - but my family sucks.
We draw names from a hat for Christmas - which is cool, but instead of just drawing names from a hat, we have to have a theme, and we have to relate our gift to the theme, and our themes have gotten increasingly harder (weirder) because we (as a family) have to always achieve bigger and better things.
This year we were each given a classic movie. We are suppose to watch the movie, get a related gift and send that gift to our person. I have never heard of my movie, but my husband insists it is a classic. The movie is called The Outlaw Josey Whales. I'm pretty sure my nephew (who is the person I am buying for) won't watch it, and I'm not all that interested in watching it. There appears to be a western mountain on it (even though I think it is set in Texas) - maybe I will just cheese out and get a gift card to REI. He does hike and mountain bike, but is very tall and very thin, so I am afraid to buy him any clothes. I imagine he has a tough time finding anything that fits him.
Can anyone think of anything that a hiker or mountain biker might want? Or some cooking related object (he cooks a lot) that would also relate to the movie The Outlaw Josey Whales.

Don't feel bad---apparently I will be spending Christmas with an Uncle I disowned about 10 years ago and haven't spoken to for years
And it will be a very small gathering----me, my mom & him---so it will be kind of hard to avoid him-------No idea why my mom puts up with her brother---he's worthless, lazy, etc......

I like the REI giftcard idea. Does he have a membership? If not you could include that, too.

No need to watch it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outlaw_Josey_WalesIt is set in the civil war and he treks out west after he was supposed to surrender but didn't. REI takes care of the treking and maybe a nice light-weight camp stove to take on the trail.

There are times that I am very glad that I'm not close to my extended family. Although I only have two sisters left, and we are on good terms, but have never spent any time together during the holidays.

Clint Eastwood movie set around the time of the civil war. I think it's a revenge type movie. Lots of horses and guns.
So something outdoorsy would probably fit in.

Thyme - your family would drive me nuts.
I buy very few gifts but the ones I do buy drive me nuts. My mom is hard to buy for because she always buys everything she wants ( not in a shopaholic way though). My MIL is hard to buy for because she cannot afford nice things and she doesn't want anything. This year she said she needed a can opener and not one of those "fancy electric ones". I don't think that will break the bank.

Are you sure they're not just punking you? Sounds more like a very elaborate (and funny) joke than an actual family activity. They're all hanging out, eating Christmas cookies and laughing about how they tricked you into suffering through some obscure movie and twisting yourself into a pretzel trying to relate this somehow to a Christmas gift.
I'd ignore that BS, buy nephew something cool that he likes and move on with my life.

BTW, if this is not a prank you should be sure to get the person who came up with this fabulous idea (and assigned the movies to watch) an extra special Christmas gift - like a puppy.

I don't have any suggestions for you, but DH watches this movie several times a year. He watches ALL of his favorite Clint Eastwood movies several times a year. Maybe there's a Clint Eastwood movie themes cd. If not, there should be just so DH can buy it.

No one else had a family that thrived on spaghetti westerns, martial arts films, and bad 70's revenge flicks starring Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris and others...and those were the only options on movie nights? No? Then I have more of a reason to hate my family than you do.

DD just informed me that she's bringing a friend none of us knows for Christmas. Way to ruin the holidays for the rest of us.

Dh is the Clint Eastwood fan. I've seen more Clint Eastwood movies in the last 10 years than I saw in the 30 leading up to it.

You definitely need details. Romantic friend or not? Dietary restrictions - just reminds me of the time my brother surprised my mom with his new Jewish girlfriend at our christmas eve pig roast..... When we have had girlfriend/boyfriend guests for the holidays, we have included them in our family tradition of having a personalized stocking. We were joking last night with DD and DSIL about all the wasted stockings. DSIL had a questioning look when we mentioned "Toni's" stocking because we really liked Toni, but then had to clarify it was Toni with an "i" and was son's GF, not DD's past BF.

I'm stuck watching The Outlaw Jose Wales every time it comes on AMC. DH loves it, I am bored to tears. Buy him chewing tobacco and then encourage him to spit all over this particular relative's house. Make sure he sneers like Clint when he does it.

The only one I remember quite well, was the one where he was leading the group of boys on a cattle drive. The Cowboys or something. I can remember everything about that day on my grandparents farm sitting in the rocking chair and watching it with my Grandpa while Grandma baked. It's weird because it was probably over 40 years ago. I might have to watch that again some day.

I can honestly say that I've never seen a John Wayne movie. True Grit was pretty good. I'm kind of torn between liking the original vs. the remake better. I saw the remake. Does that count? No? Oh well. It was a decent movie, but I've never seen the original so I can't compare.

What happens if you ignore the theme and just do what you want and get something you think the person would like or consider useful without worrying about whether it fits a theme that doesn't have any meaning for you?
I'll bet there are other family members who find the themes constricting and annoying but are not brave enough to just ignore them and do what would make them happier.
Be the first. Forget the theme. Give a gift that has meaning for you and the recipient.
Maybe next year you could suggest that people choose their own themes.

DD just informed me that she's bringing a friend none of us knows for Christmas. Way to ruin the holidays for the rest of us. Maybe the friend has no family, local or otherwise. I know I've been the guest of more than one Thanksgiving or Christmas, when my family was 1500 miles away and I couldn't afford to go. It it never dawned on me that my presence was ruining it. Wow....doesn't that defeat the meaning of Christmas?

I guess I don't get how having a friend over ruins Christmas either? for the same reason that expanding my table to include "family" I've created in my new home was going to sully the "family Thanksgiving" this year. my sister swore my parents weren't going to go for it - oh well, I'm hosting, I invite who I want to share the holiday with - and at the end of the day, the only one that was making a fuss was my sister. go figure.

I don't know... I can't fault anyone for not being super exited to have a stranger staying with them for Christmas. But isn't this the time to put your discomfort aside more than any other time?
