Well... unfortunately Virgil Showlion doesn't have to worry about me opening up that Snow Leopard breeding center... I didn't win. (don't know if NO ONE won yet though... still waiting to see as of this posting) I'm too relieved to say "I told you so." The issue is you thought you were telling him something he didn't already know....

I thought we were all kidding around on some level yesterday but now I think Virgil was 100% serious in thinking none of us knew the odds and he thought he was educating us. I won $4 on one ticket so broke even, let it ride!

At least you guys didn't have to wait in line. Watch the whole thing. It's unreal.

There's no audio. Just thousands upon thousands of people lining up to throw their money away. Having "fun", or so I'm told.

Yeh, standing in the desert sun waiting for a chance at "what if?" Must not have a lot of lottery outlets out there. I wonder if they sold cold beer for carry out in the place

Obviously you were not the winner from Tennessee last night....... Unless they start means testing the lottery scholarship here, I'll win it and never buy a ticket. I have two teenage sons interested in attending college.

Money management is a life skill, and does not come with a free pot of money.
If you can manage money, you already have some. If you can't, winning a large lottery jackpot will destroy your life.

One of the biggest lottery fails, actually already was a millionaire. I think it depends on personality and money management or the willingness to learn money management.

There are at least half a dozen videos of this same line, calling it the same thing, on YouTube. I found the video on ZH, hence they obviously consider it to be credible too. On the plus side, the newspapers have now published what the winner looks like. He seems kind of familiar.

I wonder why they chose a cartoon depicting a black man, when we all know whites on welfare and social security by the majority of tickets. Rather racist of them.

Virgil, it appears legit.
theweek.com/speedreads/599006/powerball-players-waiting-3hour-lines-buy-tickets
The lottery isn't available in Nevada, and residents are heading to towns like Primm, along the California state line, to try their luck with the Powerball. The Primm Lotto Store is about 45 miles from Las Vegas and last week sold a ticket that matched 5 of the 6 Powerball numbers — resulting in a $1 million prize, KTNV reports. Because so many people are descending upon Primm, the line to purchase tickets is sometimes three hours long.

May be wrong on this but doesn't that just mean they don't pay tax in the state they bought the ticket? What about the state they actually live in (if not the state in which they bought the ticket) and have to file state income tax returns for their resident state? Wouldn't this be income on that return? Does that make sense Maybe ArchietheDragon can answer this for us.

Tennessee nor Florida has a state income tax.
California does. I think these are the three states that sold the winning tickets.
They'll all pay federal income tax.

They'll all pay federal income tax. But like I said, won't they have to pay income tax when they file their resident state income tax. I don't live in FL but get my tickets there. I have to pay state income tax on winnings when I file my resident state tax return. Not everyone lives in the state in which they purchase a ticket. We don't have lottery here. And what about all the travelers just passing thru buying tickets. I think this "no state income tax paid" might just mean none paid to state in which ticket was sold. But I could be wrong. I will have to check my state tax laws to see. The way it is made to sound is winners won't have any tax liability beyond federal taxes. Just questioning that part.

Tennessee and Florida do not have personal state income taxes. California does. But by coincidence, California , Tennessee and Florida are three of the few states which do not tax lottery earnings if one of their citizens wins a lottery.. Why the 3 Big Powerball Winners Are Even Luckier Than You Thought If you lived in, say, Massachusetts but bought your ticket in Tennessee, you would pay Massachusetts personal state income tax on your winnings. It all depends in which state is your residence and not where you bought the ticket.

They just made it seem like anyone who bought a ticket in that state had no state tax liability. And there are people out there who will believe that till they file their resident state tax returns.

Taxes (state) are based on where the winner lived at the time of win... not where they bought the ticket.
