Because you say so, right?
It's trauma to win the lottery... Because you say so... Right?

I would think that kind of instant wealth could be a trauma... To a person who might expect that money would somehow fundamentally change everything about who they are.
I just don't think most of us here (any?) are in that demographic.

I really get tired about hearing take the annuity so you do not blow the money. How could you blow $500,000,000 cash? Unless you start donating to Hillary's campaign, you will be fine. Seriously, does anyone believe the Federal and state governments will not be raising individual income tax rates in the next five years, or even multiple times over the next twenty five years, thus eroding your yearly income? Take the lump sum now, invest half in tax free bonds, and live off the income stream from that. Also consider buying that tropical island somewhere and instituting your own tax free country. Either way, the winner will not handle the money well. I think that depends on the winner...

Oh Oh
I might have to rethink My $2,500,000,000 winning ticket. They announced if it rolls over it will be only $2,000,000,000 The big ranch in Canada, and the Virgin Islands are now out.

Upon catching up on Virgil Showlion's counterpoints... I have decided that, should I win, $100,000,000 will go to the Canadian Center for the Repopulation of the Snow Leopard in Canada charity. If there isn't one, one will be created in his name. Wouldn't that be great! Canada teeming with Snow Leopards by the hundreds of thousands!

So it COULD sustainably impact happiness... But only by making it worse, not better... Because you say so, right? It's trauma to win the lottery... Because you say so... Right? Yes, it could sustainably diminish happiness if it created trauma. And yes, trauma only makes things worse. I've already explained why making things better permanently is disclaimed by psychological research. If you don't accept my message board say-so, there are countless books on the science of happiness out there of which you may avail yourself. If you're looking for a starting point, search for "happiness set point theory". The first link I found was here. As for lotteries being traumatic, while I marvel at your never having heard of lotteries leading to trauma or great personal tragedy, I'll once again point out that myriad books and articles have been written on the subject and are but a search away. A compendium of some recent high-profile tragedies is found here to get you started. Or you can continue to sit on your duff parroting "Because you say so, right?" until you feel better. It's up to you.

I'd build a zeppelin, fill it with hydrogen, pack it to the gunnels with homebrew gun powder, and fly it into your mansion. It would be a suicide mission but I'd have stopped you. I'd have stopped you.

I just forgot to add that I would put the reserve in Virgil's back yard since Snow Leopards don't do well on the Gulf Coast. But feel free to add to my reserve at any time. The more the merrier

What you said is that money wouldn't sustainably affect happiness... Which is the opposite of which you have been claiming. If happiness is fixed, and you are happy, the end result would be that getting money would still leave you happy. If that is true then it negates your suggestion that winning the lottery is a sure negative impact on happiness.
You are generalizing the potential negatives to everyone as the only possible outcome. While those make good reading, this is not the only outcome. Anecdotal doesn't prove any point. There is no evidence that the only possible outcome of a windfall is tragedy.

The entire threads on this subject you have been making claims you pronounce as fact based in nothng but your opinion, first and foremost that anyone who has fun buying a lottery ticket has no rational understanding of the odds...

Colin and Christine Weir Gave to Their Community and Children in Need
While known to splurge every now and then, this Scottish couple has given large amounts over the years to causes that moved them. Since winning about $250 million in 2011, the two have made notable donations to a little girl with cerebral palsy, a promising young artist, and a child in need of a prosthetic limb. They also gave their house to their neighbor, who was a teen mother, and contributed countless dollars to fund causes in their community through the Weir Charitable Trust.
Les Robins Founded a Day Camp For Children
When Les Robins won the $111 million jackpot in 1993, it was the highest Powerball jackpot to date. It's likely that his background as a middle school teacher inspired Robins to use a large portion of his winnings to build a day camp for children. Camp Winnegator is still a successful camp over 20 years later.

I'm not saying it's categorically impossible for good things to come from a lottery. That's oped's straw man.

Winning the lottery wouldn't necessarily be traumatic. I think that's an overstatement. Stressful? Yes, of course. Stress results from major changes, whether those changes are for the good, or not. Winning the lottery would be such an event and would definitely result in stress. Stress, however, can be handled much more easily than actual trauma.

Well... unfortunately Virgil Showlion doesn't have to worry about me opening up that Snow Leopard breeding center... I didn't win. (don't know if NO ONE won yet though... still waiting to see as of this posting)

Winning the lottery would be such an event and would definitely result in stress. Stress, however, can be handled much more easily than actual trauma. If we're talking in terms of possibilities rather than what is inevitable, I definitely don't think it's an overstatement. For a lottery of this size, stress is inevitable. Trauma isn't inevitable, but you'll be lucky to avoid it. Going back to Reply #138, I stand by my best case scenario: "you make it through the trauma (and I use the term appropriately) of winning and the stress of managing your money during the first few years, and, provided your family, some of your friendships, and your mental health have survived the shock, you're just as happy as you were before--no happier--having exchanged one set of worries and troubles for another. Maybe you'll find a new sense of purpose managing a foundation to spend your money, and that will keep you together. Maybe you'll just give up caring, waste away, and wake up despising who you've become, wondering where your life went." Note that the particularly dire assessment pertains to this lottery jackpot in particular, not to all lotteries generally. Winning $5 million wouldn't have nearly as great an impact, and the negative prognosis is scaled back accordingly. The "you're just as happy as you were before" pertains equally to lotteries of any size.
