As I said it was an obscure history book, published sometimes in the 40-50s.
I just looked up the treaty at the end of Mexican war and is saying that U.S. In fact paid a lump sum of $15 million for parts of Texas, Nevada, Colorado to the Mexican government and assumed $3.5 million that the Mexican Government owed to some U.S. Citizens. So, that means there was some land buying that didn't require approval from the inhabitants of the territory whom were Hispanics in majority. As a result, Spanish speaking in the area even 175 years later, I'd consider it just normal.

You can't possibly run into many people that speak Native American only maybe because there aren't so many of them left?! The white man took care to reduce them to a point where they can't do much or say much for that matter. The remnants of the native nations are just trying to survive so they are more willing to accommodate/ speak the language of those that control things.
Outside Montreal, there is a histhorycal site, a fort to be more exact. Said fort changed hands back and forth between French and English and there are writings/testimonies from each side as to speak of the history of the fort. There is also a written account of a local tribal chief who apparently said something like this: "When the white man came, he had the Bible and we had the land. Now, we have the Bible, he has the land!"
That goes to show that the European settlers stopped at nothing in order to aquire what they came for or what they wanted. But denying those that were there their natural/historical rights to their language and traditions and the propagation of such thru time and generations it is absolutely wrong!
And I'm pretty sure that there, in the aforementioned states, might be some people of Latin descent that more or less refuse to speak English just as a sign of defiance. And they also might be born and raised American citizens!
Is illegal immigration a big thing down south? Sure, I'm not denying that but just the fact that they speak Spanish on US territory doesn't mean much if anything.

I didn't say that they don't know English but that they might refuse to use it maybe sometimes just as a sign of defiance.
Do I believe that everybody that lives in this country legal or illegal as it may be should speak English? Yes I do but according to the law we can't force that on anyone. Not speaking English is not equivalent with illegal!

Doesn't bother me. If I can't understand them, I don't hire them.

Probably. But here they'd be from Bosnia. Do we have a Bosnian illegal alien problem? I did not know that. I grew up in the suburbs of Gary Indiana, home to USS largest steel complex on Lake Michigan (or it used to be it's largest, do not know anymore) Back in the fifties and sixties growing up, my dad always talked about the displaced eastern Europeans working in the mills. Came over after WWII but they were all legal, on visas, and other family members who migrated years earlier for a support group. many never spoke English, but did the jobs in the mills, never complaining. Great work ethic, made the kids attend school and learn learn learn.
Oh yeah, and obey the darn laws.

As a result, Spanish speaking in the area even 175 years later, I'd consider it just normal. But, as I quoted from my link, Hispanics weren't in the majority. There were about three times as many Anglos as Hispanics. Bilingual makes sense to me as I do feel it is important for people to retain ties to their heritage and celebrate it. Spanish-speaking only leads me to believe that I am dealing with a person who has recently arrived here and has not taken the time or has no interest in learning English.

I doubt the Bosnians are here illegally. I've been told they're sponsored by various churches. Only the first generation has language issues. The rest assimilate the way immigrants used to.

Are there notable amounts of second generation immigrants that have yet to 'assimilate'? I seriously doubt it.

The second cartoon is more provocative, and better. It shows Christ walking on water next to the words: "Proof that Europe is Christian. Christians walk on water—Muslim children sink." Only the most literally-minded could consider this an attack on Muslims. It’s quite obviously a stinging criticism of those hard right-wingers who insist Europe must remain a Christian continent and who might just think that drowned Muslim kids around our watery borders are a price worth paying to keep it so.
From Reason magazine. I wonder if anyone will be okay with killing cartoonist over this? The cartoon is from Charlie Hedbo. If it is off limits here, please delete.
