So sad. He's in complete renal failure. He's 16. We just got the call from the vet reporting that the blood tests from yesterday has his potassium at 9.5 and creatinin (sp?) is at 20. Appt is at 4:20
This is the Super-sized Siamese who has moved with us from the Bay Area to AZ to Bonn and back to the Bay Area. He was the one that got bit by the rattlesnake ten years ago and was known as the 5k cat for a while.
I can't say he's the best cat that we've ever had because they are all special in their own way. But he was always large (at one point 17lbs!) and in charge with one heck of a Siamese yowl. Sweetest nature and such a lover.
RIP Nikki

I am so sorry, Bonny. Putting down a pet is never easy. I remember putting down my tuxedo cat after 17 yrs. It was just awful! I wish you all the best

I'm so sorry, Bonny. Our beloved pets never really leave us when they cross over the Rainbow Bridge, they are still in our hearts.
You gave him a good life, and I'm sure he knew you loved him very much.

I'm so sorry Bonny. It is so hard. He knows he is loved.
Funny stories.......Well there was a few months ago when Dez brought a live baby bunny in the house & let it go. I spent two days chasing it around the house (off & on) I finally caught it & raced with it out the front door in my nightgown.

I'm so sorry! Sounds like you gave him one fabulous life! My condolences.
Funny story: DS has a 120 lb. male bull mastiff. DS's girlfriend recently bought a Victoria's Secret hot pink comforter and matching pillows. The dog drags them off the bed and makes his own bed on the floor with them every night. A large male dog on hot pink VS bedding is quite a sight.

I'm sorry Bonny.
Fun story - one of my sisters has a golden retriever, Buddy. He's a big dog, probably close to 100 lbs. But he's such a sweetheart. My parents dog-sit and last weekend they took him to their trailer in Door Co. It's on a campgrounds and they've made friends there. So Friday night they had a fire at their site and lots of friends came to visit. And Buddy was invited to come to a campfire the next night! I think Mom and Dad were the afterthought invitations!

So sorry for your loss. *hugs*
Funny stories, per request.
I had been unpacking in the kitchen and had a chair in there for when I was putting things in the lower cupboards. I finished up, but forgot to move the chair out of the kitchen. Not too much longer, I heard pots rattling. Junebug had used the chair to get up on the stove top and was licking out the pots.
A few weeks before that, when we were having up housewarming BBQ, we had moved the dining room chairs out from under the table to against the back wall, to make it easier to access all the junk food on the table. It turns out that chairs against the back wall are NOT too far away from the table for Junebug to make the leap. Again, I hear something and look over, and there's the Bug, up on the table. With all the chips and junk food up there, I was very worried. But I shouldn't have been. Her nose was buried in the container of baby carrots - a favorite Junebug snack.

Funny cat story: When we lived in NV, our cat Maggie was indoor/outdoor. She had her own pet door, and we backed up to government land. She did lots of hunting. She loved to bring things in the house and let them go. No baby bunnies, but lots and lots of lizards. (We would often find their detached tails long before we found them and got them back outside.) When Mom was selling that house, she and step-dad were going out of town the weekend of the open house. Mom warned her RE agent about Maggie's habits, but that agent did NOT warn the other agent who was also sitting the open house one afternoon. That woman was sitting on the couch when Maggie jumped in her lap, with something in her mouth - a bird. The woman was apparently okay until Maggie set the bird down in her lap, and she realized it was still alive....
Touching cat story: The background- My grandmother believed in reincarnation. She wanted to come back as a cat and told my grandfather that, after her death, if a stray cat ever showed up on his door step, he had better take it in. Years and a different state later, my grandfather is living happily on a reservation in the Nevada desert. There are lots loose, if not exactly stray, animals around, but he starts to notice one cat in particular- a big tom, a long haired orange tabby, who seems new to the area. My grandfather starts putting food and water out for him during the summer months, and by winter, Ringer, as he is now known, is firmly ensconced in my grandfather’s trailer. We called him the fluffy cat who never fluffed, but I can’t imagine how big he would have seemed if he had. He could stretch out diagonally and take up a whole bed. While still independent, he provided my grandfather with wonderful companionship. It wasn’t long after Ringer moved in that my grandfather started to experience serious pain in his stomach. Month, what felt like a million scans, and one exploratory surgery later, my grandfather was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. We did as much of my grandfather’s care at his home as possible. My aunt quit her job and moved to come take care of him. Ringer became less independent. You would never have known he was once a stray. He spent most of his time curled up on the hospital bed next to my grandfather. Ringer stayed at the trailer with my aunt for a little over a year, through her pregnancy and the birth of my cousin. Finally, my aunt was getting her life back in order and decided to move out of state. Ringer came to live with us. We moved to house where we backed up to undeveloped land. Ringer began wandering. Soon, he wasn’t coming home every night, and then not for nights at a time. My mother started asking the neighbors about him, and found out they thought he was a stray, and multiple houses had been putting food out for him. Then there came the time when we hadn’t seen him for over a week. We did some more asking, and discovered that he had moved in with a family about a block away. The mother had just died of cancer, and the little boy needed someone to love. Ringer was filling that role. Mom took his vet records over and gave them to the family.

Shanen I have a Maggie & she hunts in the woods behind my house. She usually only brings me sparkly things she finds like girl's hair bands & such. One day she dropped a live very small snake at my feet. Ringer

sorry Bonny my beast - Murphy - was so excited to see my mom this one time I brought her up so Mom could puppy-sit for a couple days....well, my parents have a split-level house. the large patio is off the lower floor at ground level, with a "widow's walk" off the slider in the dining room. so Mom's outside on the widow's walk, smoking a butt, when Murphy and I come in thru the front door. Mom left the interior slider door open so she could listen for us coming in, but kept the screen slider closed. Mom starts calling to Murphy when we're still on the stairs, and I actually had to drop the leash b/c Punk was pulling so hard. she went screaming around the furniture in the way and went straight out to the widow's walk to see her Nana - THROUGH the screen. my dad actually had to replace the panel. and bummer.....the pic I wanted to attach is way too big. I'll work on that and edit the post if I can get it to push though.

Sorry for your loss.
Funny story: After a 5 days of being sequestered in a bedroom - I let the newly adopted cats out of their room to explore the house. (Boy Cat was so stressed from the year at the shelter I didn't want to let him loose in the house and lose him "under a bed". Little Girl Cat - Black tuxedo cat with a tiny bit of white on her paws and chest- was all cocky and "feral" and I was afraid I'd loose her in the house too - so the squester seemed reasonable for calming down and getting to know one another).
Any way, Boy Cat is horrified by the open door and goes and hides in his carrier. Little Girl Cat is all I OWN THIS PLACE and struts out to survey her new digs (it would be months before I could go my hands on her again).
After a couple of hour I discover Boy Cat cowering under the dining room table while I'm talking to him and trying to coax him out - the now GREY Little Girl Cat saunters over to watch me making a fool of myself talking baby talk to Boy Cat.
I'm like "what the hell happened! How did my BLACK cat become GREY What did she get into OMG! What's happening!!!"
I immediately turn my attention to the Little Girl Cat and after much chasing/coaxing being patient with a can of cat food I manage to grab her - but she slips thru my hands with a POOF of fine dust. My hands and clothes are now covered with GREY powder... I'm like "who Baby Powdered my Cat!!!" (um, I know about what a Baby Powdered cat looks and feels like because of an unfortunate incident with the family cat when I was 5....) And then, it dawns on me - it's not Baby Powder - it's ASH... from the FIREPLACE. Little Girl Cat has been IN the Fireplace and either got under the grate OR was laying on the grate or laid down in there or tried to escape up the flue.... somehow getting a good coating of ash all over herself.
Since I couldn't catch her - she just had to deal with the coating of ash herself. I then was able to clean up the layer of ash she left behind where ever she laid down or sat....
I'm not sure what's funnier - my Black Cat turning Grey or that fact that when I was 5 - I liberally Baby Powdered the Family Cat since I was using him as a 'baby' before putting him to bed in my doll stroller. (the cat liked to sleep in the doll stroller and would sometimes tolerate being dressed in a baby sweater and bonnet). Never Baby Powder a cat... NEVER.

I'm so sorry you've had to make this heart-breaking decision, Bonny . My last two kitties went through renal failure - it happens often in senior cats. My first guy (Gin-Gin) lived a healthy & happy life with DH and I for over 22 yrs - and then our next guy (Max), for 16.
Once they go into renal failure there's usually no hope of recovery - and helping them on their way to the Rainbow Bridge is much more loving & compassionate than having them linger & suffer just to hold onto them for a while longer.
I'm so sorry you're dealing with the decision. May this bring you some comfort

Sorry, Bonny.
As a teen our family had dog that was really my dog. As a young adult I got my first apartment in the second floor of two family about a mile from my parents' house. My wonderful dog Rex (mix of golden retriever and german shepherd) would jump the fence at my parents house and come and wait on my front step for me to come home from work. The only thing was he considered the whole property mine and would not let the landlady go in her front door. She would have to drive round the back, go in the back door and call my Mom to come get the dog! He finally got to know her enough that he let her use her own front door!
Forty years ago and I can still smile about it!

Bonny - I am so sorry for your loss.
(Looks down at her 15yo black kitty curled up in her lap)
Spice (the one in my lap) is one of the few cats we got as a kitten as I tend to adopt older cats from the shelter.
So when we got her I was an inexperienced kitten mom. One of the first times I went to trim her claws she didn't squirm much, just kept looking me straight in the eyes and meowing loudly.
After several minutes of this, until I got all her claws trimmed I finally let her go. She gave me one final look of absolute disgust, twitched her tail at me, and jumped down and ran to her litter box.
The stream that followed was more than I though a kitten could produce. It was then that I realized she wasn't yelling at me because I was trimming her claws, it was because she needed to use the litter box!

I'm sorry, Bonny.....making the decision to put down a cat is never easy, even when it's time.
Gomez was a talkative cat. He would meet me at the door when I got home from work and talk to me. It was just like a little kid whose mommy walked in and the kid needed to tell mommy every detail of what happened in school. The conversation would go on for a good 10 minutes after I walked in the door.
Scary thing.....I talked back to him, saying the same things a parent would say with a kid jabbering on.

Condolences,
This is the hardest part of having a pet. I know you love him very much and he knows it too. You can't let him suffer and so he will be at peace now. We will all keep you in our thoughts.
I sincerely hope we will get to see our furbabies again one day. I am going to be really disappointed if it does not happen. They make life here on earth so much better.

I am sorry for your loss, but it sounds like he had a good life. My Maine Coon is one of those cats that takes it personally if I ever have to leave town. It doesn't happen often, and I have a friend who checks on him at least once a day. I know she spends time hanging out with him because she watches entire seasons of shows on Netflix. However, the first time I left him for more than a few days, he spitefully peed on the carpet and would not look at me when I came home. The next time I had to go out of town for a week, it was easier on him because I had gotten him a new cat friend, but he still ignored me when I first got home. Later that night, I woke up to him pinning down my legs and licking my toes. I think he was trying to say he was over being upset, but please do not do that again.

Sorry, Bonny. Not looking forward to when that moment comes for our cat: she is around 13 or 14 now, I think. When we brought our son home from the hospital, our cat was rightfully suspicious...circling the carrier and pawing at the edges. Then he started crying. She leaped in the air, swatted him in the head three times (no claws), then ran to hide under the bed. Their relationship has since improved.

My Elmo used to do squirrel and monkey animal impressions that I thought were freaking hilarious. He passed in Sept. 2010 and I haven't got another cat.

Sorry Bonny. Its a sad day for you today.
Funny story.........My husband had a habit of leaving the bathroom door open.
One day I walked passed to see him sitting reading the paper, underpants round his ankles....With our cat (chequers) curled up in them.... using them like a hammock. A picture of Sunday morning bliss
Remember the good times.

Sorry for your loss Bonny. I lost my Princess to renal failure last year. She was probably about 17 or 18 and had traveled with me coast to coast.
Recent funny cat story, wee Munchie, a 9 month old Himalayan mix, was sniffing around my clothes drying rack and knocked it over on herself. She was frantically hopping through the bars as it expanded accordion style then collapsed back to the ground. She circled it hunchbacked and poofy tailed for the next 10 minutes.

Sorry Bonny. Been in your place too many times and will be there again.
My first cat, Benjamin, lived to be 16. At that 70's townhouse I talked about in another thread, I decided to have friends over for Thanksgiving. While I was busy carving the turkey, I looked over and Benjamin was sitting in the drippings. Needless to say, we had no gravy that Thanksgiving.
I got Benjamin addicted to catnip. He refused to let me go to bed until he had his catnip. He would roll in it and howl and it was quite a sight to see. He even did it the night before I had to put him down.

He's not overweight in the least, just massive. I can't believe so much noise can come out of a 20 pound cat.
