So sorry! Our pets are family, it is so hard when we have to say good-bye.

This is a doggy story. We are watching my DS's elderly black lab while he is out of town. The dog has followed my DH everywhere in the house. Stares at him while he eats. DH is gone for the evening and now the yowling. The dog yowls if DH even goes out in the garage. I'm getting attached to him even though I don't want to own a dog.

So sad. He's in complete renal failure. He's 16. We just got the call from the vet reporting that the blood tests from yesterday has his potassium at 9.5 and creatinin (sp?) is at 20. Appt is at 4:20
This is the Super-sized Siamese who has moved with us from the Bay Area to AZ to Bonn and back to the Bay Area. He was the one that got bit by the rattlesnake ten years ago and was known as the 5k cat for a while.
I can't say he's the best cat that we've ever had because they are all special in their own way. But he was always large (at one point 17lbs!) and in charge with one heck of a Siamese yowl. Sweetest nature and such a lover.
RIP Nikki
Make me feel better and share your favorite pet stories, especially funny ones. Awww, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you were with him in his final moments. My Sushi is a huge Oriental at 20 pounds. He's not overweight in the least, just massive. I can't believe so much noise can come out of a 20 pound cat.
My Maine Coon is also a bit over 20 pounds, and he is one of the friendliest cats I have ever met. Big cats are the best snugglers! It makes it worth putting up with the meowing.

Thanks guys.
It went as well as expected. In many ways it's a big relief. As much as you want to hang onto them there's a time to let go. Poor guy could barely walk today. Seeing him after the sedative (before THE shot) was good. First time in days where he was truly relaxed. It's a good last memory to have.
Thanks everyone for sharing your stories.

So sorry Bonny!
If you need another silly story, my Bad Boy Puppy tends to nap most of the day now (he's getting older), but the minute a member of our family walks in the door, he's standing right by the door with one of our socks in his mouth, pretending he's been busy all day.

Awe...I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had to put down a couple of my pets. It's so difficult, but, like you said, a bit a relief, too. I'm sure your kitty lived a wonderful life with you.

I'm so sorry. Putting a pet down truly sucks.
As for a cute story. When my dog was a puppy (like 10-12 weeks old), I just to keep her in kitchen behind a baby gate, as I didn't want her getting hurt by my other dog. At 10-12 weeks my dog was about 6lbs, my other dog was 75lbs. So one day I come home and the puppy and my other dog meet me at the backdoor. I couldn't work out how the puppy www getting out. So one day I left and snuck back in. I saw the puppy crawling up the baby gate and my other dog standing next to it so the puppy could climb on his back. He then laid down so she could get on the floor. The sneaky buggers were tag teaming behind my back. The baby gate came down that day for good. I figured if they were working that hard to hang out together that I shouldn't separate them.

It's sad. I took my dog to Vet today for a massage (older (12 years old) and has back problems)
There was an older lady there (in her 70s or so), sobbing a bit, her dog just passed away at 16. I offered her my condolences. She sat and petted my dog for a bit, that seemed to help her. It's hard.

So sorry you lost your big, friendly cat today. They really are the best pets.
One of my favorite big, friendly cats loved to eat chili of all things. The first time it happened, I'd left a pot on the counter to cool down before refrigerating it and the booger jumped up (which was very rare for him - he wasn't allowed on the counters and was a good boy, so it must have been just irresistible), buried his face in the pot and was just chowing it down as fast as he could eat. We will not discuss what horrible gas the chili gave him. But he was just enamored with the stuff, I had to pull him away from the chili and he was ready to go digging the garbage to get more. Very weird since I make spicy chili. But we figured he really wanted the steak in there.
Turns out, no - he just really loved chili spices. A few weeks later when I made vegetarian chili, he did the same thing. What kind of animal eats chili?

I'm glad it worked out Bonny. Its hard to say goodbye, but I think it can be a blessing to you & them to let go with the sedative.
As some might remember I had to say goodbye to my beloved bearded dragon a year or so ago. I was devastated as he had lived everywhere I had since 1987. He was my buddy and I felt guilty when he fought me on forcing chicken broth into him to keep him hydrated. Lizards refusing food & drink is often a sign per the vets they are ready to pass, much like older humans actually.
It was tough. I do not know when he passed. It was very hard for me to bury him because I wanted him to be OK even though he was likely the equivalent of a 100 year old human. I'm not sure of my fave memories, but he was attracted to electricity. I remember him biting those coax cables or outlets when he was hungry. And I remember the time he disappeared in my other apartment and wasn't found for 6 months until the heat was turned on.

Bonny, I'm so sorry for your loss. Been there, done that and it always hurts down deep. My old Siamese sounds a lot like yours. He was 19 when his kidneys failed and was always a big, gregarious cat who loved everybody. He loved to travel and would make friends with hotel staff in order to beg kitchen treats. Just a big, furry ball of wonderfulness but, fortunately, without the horrible Siamese howl. He meowed like a regular old cat. Know I'm thinking about you and grieving with you.

Sushi eats everything from boiled cabbage to date squares to loaves of bread. Go figure.

he must be family to my sister's first rescue cat. this one will eat buffalo chicken pizza, one layer/ingredient at a time. oh, and the spicier the better.

I had a cat that LOVED BBQ anything, he just would go crazy for BBQ food. I had a dog that loved pasta and it had to have sauce on it or he wouldn't touch it.

My Fiona (Sweet Fee) has a crazy sweet tooth. Last week I lost three peaches and a cheesecake bar. I'm super careful about hiding chocolates, but for some reason I always forget that nothing is safe if left on the counters. Even if it is covered or wrapped in plastic, she will find a way.

Gomez used to adore angel food cake. That damn cat could eat a whole slice himself.....hell, if he had access to the whole cake, he could probably have eaten the better part of it!
Sheldon eats dog food. He gets his nose into Harpo's bowl when he gets fed and Harpo just nudges him out of the way. I figure it's fair, as Harpo expects Sheldon's cat treats when Sheldon gets them.

My kitty Sprite loves to play Lady Godiva. She adores rolling around on the floor or couch or my lap and stretching out on her back. She also snores so loud that people have heard her when she was sleeping on the couch and I had my bedroom door closed and was on the phone.
-hug-Bonnie I know how hard it is to let a beloved pet go.

I'm so sorry about your kitty. I have one that has gone through so much with me that even though she is now a cranky old lady, when she goes, a huge part of my life, good and bad, that she shared with me, will have the one person that shared it with me and that I cried out to and complained to when there was no one else. Yes, I referred to my cat as a person.

I'm so sorry about your loss of your furbaby. They are family.
My 19 yr old kitty that we lost a couple of years ago was with me during the time when DH#1 passed. She grieved with me and protected me and the house from all intruders, including the kitty in the mirror.
We now have another kitty that was a 4 yr old rescue and he is a love. A flat-faced Persian that is a very picky eater. He doesn't like people food at all and will only eat fancy feast with gravy. And no salmon.

Dez & Onyx eat only kitty food. But Maggie likes people food. She can't get up on the counter because she has shorty little legs & isn't much of a jumper. I put my plate on the floor & let her lick it when I'm done. We also share cheese every night. She loves her cheese.

I love these food stories!
I don't have any funny food stories about Nikki but my childhood cat "Kitten" who lived to 21 1/2 (also Siamese) loved Graham crackers. It was so funny to watch because when she started to eat them she was already in her high teens and missing about half of her front teeth. Only half the food would actually make it into her mouth.
The black cat (Goldie Zwei) does the cutest food dance (sits up on her hind legs and sways) which totally reinforces more bad begging behavior.
The spoiled cats are proof we would have been terrible parents!

Benjamin, the cat I spoke of earlier, had FUS all of his life. Probably other things as well related to his kidneys. It was a constant battle of urinary tract infections with him his entire life. Vet also tested him for FeLV many times, in the days before the vaccine. Those were also the days when the test was sent out of state so I had to wait at least a week for the results. Vet called him a "poor doer". I should have let him go much sooner than I did. I didn't until the vet made it clear that it had to be done. I haven't been as selfish with my other cats.

The spoiled cats are proof we would have been terrible parents! Au contraire mon ami! Parents have a duty to raise their children well, with boundaries, to become contributing members of society. Cat servants on the other hand, exist only to make life easier for their masters. I though you understood this basic truth.

I have one funny cat story:
When I was a teenager, one summer we had a rat problem in our attic. My father (God rest his soul) decided that the solution was to put our pet (male) cat up there for a hunt - because he had proven himself by constantly bringing home half-dead rats, mice, lizards, baby birds, etc.
Things were quiet for the first night or two (my dad brought him down during the daytime) - - and then late one evening we heard a mad scratching scramble and the cat started to meow. And then he started to howl. It took us a minute or so to locate him - he had either slipped and fallen (unlikely) or had jumped chasing a rat - and had ended up about chest-level on a cross-beam in the space between the inner and outer house walls of the master bedroom. When dad and my brothers were unable to retrieve him via the attic, their only other option became to rescue him by tearing off part of the wall. They decided to get at the cat from the outside wall, so they began tearing off the siding. I remember the tearing and crunching noises reverberating very loudly in the yard. When they couldn't see well enough using flashlights, they pulled out the car and faced the headlights toward the front of the house so they could see what they were doing.
Several minutes later, along comes a cop car (in our normally VERY quiet neighborhood) with it's lights flashing. Apparently the neighbors thought someone was trying to break violently into the house and murder someone in the middle of the night, so they called the police! When the cops were told what happened, they laughed and helped out my dad and brothers. The trickiest part was catching the cat before he ran away to make sure he was okay (he was fine, just mad).
One of the cops - who was clearly NOT a cat lover - said: "It if were me, I would have saved the trouble of having to fix the house by getting off a shot or two into the wall and then pouring down some concrete."
Needless to say, my mother made my father call an exterminator - and a tree trimming service so the rats could no longer get onto the roof.

OMG - kittensaver - your story reminded me of something. In our older home (two houses ago) DH and I were doing some renovations in the kitchen. We had the return vents uncovered, but since the cats never went near them didn't think this was a problem. (You'all know where this is going, right?) So cue me working late and getting a frantic call from DH. Yep - apparently the cleaning ladies scared our light tan cat who dove down one of the vents for cover. He then crawled a few feet in until he was good and stuck, for a few hours DH got some wire shears and cut the whole section of the vent tube and got the chubbers out. Problem was he was filthy!!! and trying to clean himself. The cat wouldn't let DH near him and WIFEY I NEED YOU HOME NOW I CAN'T DEAL WITH A SCARED DIRTY GOING TO GET SICK IF HE CLEANS HIMSELF CAT!!! Needless to say I left work and got home as fast as I can. My tan tiger strip was now a filthy black-grey. Pride left on the doorstep, I stripped naked, grabbed my boy (the cat, not DH) and hopped in the shower. It's a testament to how much that cat trusted me (fully clawed) that I didn't need a blood transfusion. He was terrified but I got him clean. I don't know who looked more pathetic after that shower, me or my cat.

One 4th of July we had a bar b que & then lit off fireworks. The fireworks terrified our Malamute who unbeknownst to us ripped a whole in the drywall in the laundry room & jumped into the wall. There wasn't enough room for her to maneuver & she got stuck in there. So all our guests had to help us take the wall out to get her out. I'm fairly certain it was the last time we let off backyard fireworks.

OMG - kittensaver - your story reminded me of something. Do all cats do things like this? So... here's the spoiler so no one gets overly worried while reading this story. The cat lived to 23 years old. Anyway.. when we were very young we got in the car one night to go somewhere. My dad at the time drove one of those land yacht sized Cadillacs. So there we are all sitting in the car, and when he turned the key a big puff of white fur comes up from the engine *reread the spoiler here if you are worried* followed by a yowl of epic proportions. Immediately me and my sister start to cry (I was 3/4 she was 7/8). Now my dad had questionable empathy, was known to be the cheapest man alive, and really did not have the reputation for going out of his way for animals. He did apparently fear my mom. As she got us out of the car, she told him he needed to figure out what to do, and that his daughters would judge him for the rest of his life on the outcome. So.. with little choice, he called the tow truck, towed the car to the only open garage that he could find, had the engine lifted out of the car, to retrieve the one very dirty, very pissed off cat that was growling from the space between the engine and the fan. This same cat promptly swiped at and clawed one of the mechanics and then bit my dad. He brought the cat home and then mom now had to give the cat a bath... I think the cat bit my mom too. So what physical damage occurred to the cat? She was missing a swatch of fur only (skin was not even broken) on one half of her side. I have never met your mother yet find myself liking her immensley.

OMG you guys and your stories of pets, tearing out walls and lifting car engines!
We will have Nikki reminders for a looooong time. Besides all that fine cat hair all over the house, about six months ago on one of his trips back from vet he let go a full bladder on my backseat. Poor guy had been holding it during an hour long vet visit but could hold it no longer. I've tried soaking it with Nature's Miracle and other enzyme cleaners but to no avail.
My 4 Runner is now known as the Pissmobile.
