If we are going to set the threshold for pet ownership in this country at 'you must value them the same as your children' then we are just going to have a lot more homeless pets out there.

10k surgery is a whole other ball game because it generally means something is seriously wrong. something that probably has lasting issues and changes the quality of life for the dog. I've never heard of a surgery for 10k where everything was A-OK after. The vet bills that roll that high generally deal with cancer and tumors, etc. So because the higher number is acceptable to you, others are wrong? And how do you know where the threshold dollar wise is between god and bad surgery or being ok or not after? How long have you been a practicing vet exactly? For me it isn't so much about the number, it is about your view of dogs in general.

beergut, did you get an estimate for the pool yet? Nope. I still contend the community pool a block away is a perfectly acceptable option for her and the kids.

Well, at least beer gets to feel smug about one of his decisions for awhile.
Again though, if spending the money on the dog is such a good thing, why are you bitching about it?

What is wrong with wanting another dog? And God only knows when we will have a kid, the dog might be 2-3 by then. There is nothing wrong with wanting a dog. If you are willing and able to care for it. Define "willing & able to care for it"? You seem to have a pretty low bar in that regard.

To me a dog is not a member of the family and it does have a job. And no, I would not be willing to pay that kind of money for it. I would either put it down or give it to a shelter. That doesn't make me a monster. And you're right. It's not at all comparable to how I view people. I joke around a lot about the girls sometimes, but they know that if there is any one person in the world that has their back it's me. I would spend every dime I had to provide for them and make them happy. I would not afford that same monetary expense to a dog. Again, hate if you want. Then own it and quit trying to back pedal and soften your stance. Your dogs are appliances to you. Dogs are disposable to you. Plain and simple. And I'm not sorry about my opinion on this... but I disagree. You don't have to agree with me. That's your right. Just as it is my right to disagree with anyone who assumes what I think or how I think it. I simply stated that people are more important than animals IMO. Doesn't mean that I don't like animals. I have owned dogs in the past and may in the future. Right now with the girls getting older and going off to college, I won't because I don't want to have another mouth to feed or have to find someone to watch it when I can't.

Larger breeds have a shorter life expectancy, like 8 or 9. In that case, 5 or 6 is getting up there. Would I pay another $1000? Probably. Would I pay $5000? No. That's a Roth contribution not made for the year. That's a chunk I'm not contributing for my kids' college. I can't afford to throw away that much. Now that I think about college, I don't think I can afford any pets...

I've spent thousands of dollars fixing up dogs that aren't even mine (foster animals). It was worth it to me. My parents foster dogs. They try to be 'on vacation' or at least out of the house when it is time for their new adoptive owners to come pick them up. It is very difficult to not become attached.

Larger breeds have a shorter life expectancy, like 8 or 9. In that case, 5 or 6 is getting up there. Except for really large breeds, it is more like 11-13. This is a boxer/pitbull mix, so I would expect longer than 8-9.

I don't back down from anyone ever. I stand behind everything I said. I stated that I would not pay that much for a dog. I wouldn't. Here's another example. I had a dog that bit my kid. A different dog than the German Shepherd. No way was that dog gonna get another chance to do it. There is a kill shelter down the street from my house. I could have gone and dropped her off saying that I found her and they would have kept her 3 days and then euthanized her. I instead took her to the no kill shelter and told them why I would no longer have her in my house and suggested they not adopt her out to any families with little kids since she just bit mine unprovoked. I stand behind that decision to this day. You already backed down when you tried to change the subject to talk about how wonderful your treat your dogs and how many compliments you received on your German Shepherd, and you're doing it again with your story about another dog biting your kid. You're even trying to get us to think how wonderful you are because you took it to a no-kill shelter instead of lying to people at a kill shelter and having it euthanized. Quite the humanitarian, you're such a wonderful person because you didn't lie so you can have an animal killed. You said $1900 is too much to spend on a dog. Stick with that position, and defend it. Or say it is your position, no one will change your mind, and that is the end of it. Stop trying to move the goalposts to change the minds of other posters on here. $1900 is too much to spend on a dog IMO. I never changed that stance. And I don't give a shit if you think I'm wonderful or not for not having the other one euthanized. And I never backed down with how wonderful I treated the other one. Just stated that my choice to have her humanly euthanized didn't make me irresponsible or unfit. Just meant that I wasn't willing to watch her suffer.

Exactly what I said. Come on, we all know what the word willing means. We all know what able means either physically or financially. It's not that hard.

I had one dog for almost a year. I still tear up thinking about her sometimes. My dog fostering has come to a screeching halt with the arrival of DD. 3 dogs (mine) and a toddler are just too much.

I said with something so large, usually there are some major other factors... those factors are more important to me than a dollar amount.

I would never expect someone to put a dog's welfare above or even equal to their kids. I do expect someone to care more about their dog & be willing to invest more in their dog than they would into a broken fridge.

Quote the part where I'm 'bitching about it'. There are several posters on here concerned about the dog, so I try to keep them updated.

So, she didn't have to say the dog was like her kid... She just had to say she had a sentimental attachment to it, it was part of her family and had no other purpose...

No, but agreeing with this statement (as she did):
"But she put her dog into the same category as an appliance, not worth the money to fix, not worth getting sentimental over, and not part of the family."
means you think they are disposable.

Why? Because my threshold is lower? That's my choice. Who are you to get to decide what's right and what's not? I am not as sentimental as others here which I acknowledge. So what. I don't view them as important as my kids. So what. I never once used the words appliances or investment. You all assumed that.

NO, read the thread. it started when she said "I would have put the dog down by now. Hate if you want to. $900 has already been spent on the dog and they are looking at another $1000. Too much to spend on a dog IMO" KILLING a dog because you don't want to spend $1900 is FAR AND BEYOND valuing your dog and your children at the same level. I understand some people simply can't afford huge vet bills, I get that. But FYI the only option isn't to KILL THE DOG!!!

I guess if you don't love dogs, you just can't get why some people might have an issue with your stance on them.

It would depend on a lot of things. Including but not limited to the dog's age, the medical issues, quality of life after. I would not be willing to pay that kind of money for a dog. I would be willing to give it to a no kill shelter. Don't pretend for one second that you know me. You don't. You have the right to your opinions on dogs. I'm sure you loved your pets, but did not place them at the same value as humans. That's perfectly valid. But please don't ask a no kill shelter to take on medical bills that you are unwilling to pay yourself. As someone who volunteers at a no kill shelter, it's hard enough to find funds to pay for routine care.
