I would have put the dog down by now. Hate if you want to. $900 has already been spent on the dog and they are looking at another $1000. Too much to spend on a dog IMO. Dogs are not investments, and shouldn't be treated as such. If there is a dollar amount threshold that would make you want to put them to sleep, I don't think you should be a dog owner. Show me where I called a dog an investment. I didn't. And you are entitled to your opinion. I have had healthy dog for years. Right now, I want another one but don't want to care for one. So you are half correct. Right now, I shouldn't own any animals which is why I don't have one or plan to get one. But I am in no way unfit. I would always get comments about how beautiful and obviously well cared for my dogs were from random people and my vet. Since I'm not willing to do that kind of upkeep these days, I don't have one. Know what you are talking about before you comment. I think we've had this discussion before if you remember.

My son was a wise young man, he would not date anyone with kids from a previous marriage or kids period, he said he was not taking on the expense and problems belonging to someone else. He saw to much of it in the military. He has been married now 12 years and they just had their first baby.
If I were the woman, I would not let you live there rent free. That part I would take and so much for groceries beyond that I would pay my own way. Actually I would not let a man move in period unless we were married, but I'm old.
I'm much older then MPL because I remember when dad bought me a new car when I started college, it was $3500.
I saw a 24 ft round pool that is 52 inches deep at Sam's today for $399 on sale. It's an above ground with a filter, would work nicely. But I doubt she would accept that. I saw beer comment & wanted to as well. As a single mom, I don't expect anyone I date to take on the expenses of my kids (or my expenses for that matter). Nor would I want to date anyone that views my kids as a problem.
I don't care if someone doesn't want to date someone with kids. I am very annoyed at the implication that single moms are just gold-diggers looking for a guy to replace dad as a source of income & to fix their 'problems'.

I'd love to see you (or your son) go up to a little kid and say, "Hey, your mother is an amazing woman who has all the qualities I'm looking for in a person I want to spend the rest of my life with but you, you're a problem, so no can do." At one time, I had the attitude that I wasn't going to raise someone else's kids. When I realized I had no desire to have kids of my own (I honestly don't think I have the patience to tolerate the baby years), I loosened up on this requirement. I don't view other people's kids as 'problems' or 'mistakes'. When you are in my position, you hope you can be an influential presence in the lives of the children. Again, no where did she say that. You are now being diliberately obtuse and beligerant. I have two kids. I'm not raising someone else's kids or dealing with baby mama drama. So I choose not to date, much less live with someone who has them. Well, someone that has kids at home still. Grown kids out of the house are different IMO. Call me hypocritical if you want. I don't care. I can chose who I do and don't date. Just the same as you can.

I too would have put the dog down. Mine is 11 and luckily just needed routine care so far. My cat is 19.5 years old and has issues but she will go eventually or get to ill and I will have her put down too. I love them both but I'm not making them suffer just to keep me happy. Kitty has a type 3 heart murmur out of 6 and kidney issues but she still eats good and drinks a ton of water, still grooms herself and looks good though very skinny. The vet was talking about subcutaneous injections I'm not going that route. I love her to pieces but no.
We all need to have life and death with dignity. Big difference between your animals and this dog. He is a rescue, estimated age is around 5-6 years. A week ago last Saturday, it was like having a bouncing 75 lb puppy running around the house, a bull in a china shop. He has been miserable since last Sunday, and we think we have finally pinpointed the cause. Having this surgery will improve his current quality of life, and get him back to 'normal'. Maybe you can put a price tag on the life of your animals, but this dog brings a tremendous amount of happiness to GF and her kids. I am not hugely religious, but I think if I chose to simply have him put down, I would have to answer for that decision someday. When I was driving to work yesterday after dropping the dog back home after his vet visit, I was discussing the splenectomy surgery with GF, and talking about costs. When I mentioned I was already $900 into this dog and we don't know what a surgery will cost, she asked if I wanted him put down. Yeah, if I answered in the affirmative, I might as well tell her I want to end our relationship and my relationship with two of the kids, too. If I decided to put the dog to sleep, they would have never forgiven me, especially if/when they found out I have the means to pay for the surgery. At some level, I believe how you treat dogs speaks about who you are as a person. If you cannot care for and love someone that is loyal and unconditionally loving back, what does that say about you?

Random people and your vet won't be telling you how beautiful and well cared for your dog is, I can promise you that.

that's a bit unfair. Everything has a job and role - even kids. Their job isn't just to exist - biologically, their job (and all our jobs) is to survive and procreate. Are you going to compare them to a stove?

okay, so apparently not willing to go into deep debt or bankruptcy for your pet makes you evil. Got it.

OMG please, DO NOT EVER own a dog. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using proboards I have owned dogs in the past. Very well taken care of dogs. My favorite dog was my German Shepherd I know you guys have heard me refer to plenty of times. She was the best dog ever. I had her for 13 years. When she got to where her hips were killing her, she couldn't hardly hear anything and had trouble controlling her bowels I had her humanly euthanized. How does not being willing to let her continue to suffer make me an irresponsible or unfit dog owner? You are completely moving the goalposts and trying to change the subject so you can claim you are right. You said you wouldn't pay for a dog if the costs reached a certain level. You said 'hate if you want', but appear to have backed down when confronted with the wrath of a few dog lovers. You didn't say anything about a dog's age or quality of life until now, when you're trying to move the goalposts. At least be consistent in your message, and stand behind what you said.

She applied no more sentimentality to the dog than a broken security system that would be cheaper to replace than fix.
That isn't at all comparable to how she would view kids (at least I hope not ).

I would not put him down at that age. I spared no expense on my dog when he was sick. I am talking thousands of dollars. He was a family member I had vowed to love & care for. If the roles had been reversed he would have done the same for me. I 100% agree with your last sentence.

I'm not her so obviously I can't speak for her, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say what she probably meant was that if one of her girls needed a $10k surgery, she'd do whatever she could to see that her daughter got it. Her dog? Not so much. I think she meant that the dog does not have equal billing with her daughters.

Then why complain about it. Pay whatever it costs to keep the dog and move on. Don't do it and then complain about it here or at home. And don't passive aggressively decide that that one "extra" is acceptable and one isn't. And especially don't hold it over her head and tell her that you can't marry her until she is what you want it to be. You know. I almost feel sorry for her. She gets to change who she is and still be told by you that she isn't good enough and needs to make more changes. You sit at the end of the treadmill she is running on with your little marriage carrot and tell her she's not quite there yet. The reason I say almost is because she chooses to put up with that crap from you.

Hate away, but I do think of the bottom line. My brother is living in poverty because of his cat. He has spent literally 10's of thousands. On a cat. The meds alone every month are more than I spend on daycare. He has no retirement accounts because of a cat.

Don't pretend for one second that you know me. You don't.

it's her dog, she should be able to afford its care. I also think it's funny that you shouldn't be picking up the tab for her kids' stuff, yet you should be chipping in no questions asked for her dog. People can be merciless when it comes to other people, even children, but have a soft spot for dogs. My favorite example of this is the NFL. You can rob, rape, beat your wife, murder, and still play in the NFL, and there will ALWAYS be some people who will support you. But the minute word came out Michael Vick was fighting and mistreating dogs? OH HELL NO!!! He had death threats, he received a prison sentence, and I still know people who would happily watch him be mauled to death by rabid wolverines. People have a soft spot for dogs they don't have for others, especially other human beings.

She basically said no way in hell an otherwise healthy dog is worth even the $1000 the surgery will cost. I get putting kids above dogs, no one should do otherwise. But she put her dog into the same category as an appliance, not worth the money to fix, not worth getting sentimental over, and not part of the family.

I'm not her so obviously I can't speak for her, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say what she probably meant was that if one of her girls needed a $10k surgery, she'd do whatever she could to see that her daughter got it. Her dog? Not so much. I think she meant that the dog does not have equal billing with her daughters. she said the dog wasn't family it had a job to protect the family and she wasn't willing to put in $1900 to keep the dog alive in order for it to do its job. hell, lots of appliances cost $1900+ That is vastly different than a 10k surgery. a 10k surgery is a whole other ballgame. So. You have a number too. Yours is just higher.

if $1900 puts you in deep debt/bankruptcy, you have bigger issues than a sick dog. I agree, but I didn't put a dollar amount into my post. well, you are making grand assumptions based on comments made regarding a specific dollar amount.

it's her dog, she should be able to afford its care. I blame those Sarah McLaughlin commercials.

I have owned dogs in the past. I don't back down from anyone ever. I stand behind everything I said. I stated that I would not pay that much for a dog. I wouldn't. Here's another example. I had a dog that bit my kid. A different dog than the German Shepherd. No way was that dog gonna get another chance to do it. There is a kill shelter down the street from my house. I could have gone and dropped her off saying that I found her and they would have kept her 3 days and then euthanized her. I instead took her to the no kill shelter and told them why I would no longer have her in my house and suggested they not adopt her out to any families with little kids since she just bit mine unprovoked. I stand behind that decision to this day.

well, you've been lucky and always had healthy dogs that never had an issue requiring a costly surgery. but if your next dog has something happen to it and the surgery to fix the issue costs $1900, according to you, you'd kill the dog instead of shelling out that kind of money to allow it to live a full and happy life. Random people and your vet won't be telling you how beautiful and well cared for your dog is, I can promise you that. It would depend on a lot of things. Including but not limited to the dog's age, the medical issues, quality of life after. I would not be willing to pay that kind of money for a dog. I would be willing to give it to a no kill shelter. Don't pretend for one second that you know me. You don't. lol huh?- i am not pretending to know you at all. I know nothing about you except the exact words you have written here. That is what I am responding to! "I would have put the dog down by now. Hate if you want to. $900 has already been spent on the dog and they are looking at another $1000. Too much to spend on a dog IMO." You never said... "it depends on this or that" you straight up said "TOO MUCH TO SPEND ON A DOG" I don't know you, so all I can do is go by what you've written here, which is what I'm doing. If that offends you, I can't help that. After all you did say "hate if you want" so I assume you knew that was a pretty controversial thing to say.

From everything she has said, I think he is correct. For her a dog is like a fridge - it has a purpose, but not part of the family, not worth spending money to fix, & not worth getting sentimental over.
