Too lazy to look up links, but as long as the mustang wasn't completely rusted out or didn't have 250,000 miles on it, I found ones online for about 4K. I googled, because curious of cost. I still didn't drive a car that was worth more than 4K until I was in my 30's. I'm going to also assume the car is worth more than $500-$1,000, because it seems like beer's GF likes the nicer things, and he's mentioned the girls are slightly spoiled. Are we really going to assume the girl is driving a beater? This cracked me up actually. Who has a 20 year old car with less than 250,000 miles on it? I guess it could have been a car bought from an 85 year old entering a nursing home but most people drive more than 12,500 miles a year, especially people who buy mustangs and cars like it IME. My Mom perspective is that my DD has a 15 year old Allero that really isn't the most mechanically sound car around. She also is young enough to not have the experience to know what to do or when to pull over and call vs keep driving it home. So what is happening today? She has my car to drive to her summer college class in the next county and then work until midnight tonight and I have her old crappy car.

Does the 17 year old have a job? The insurance must be horrendous plus now an at fault accident complete with a ticket. So higher rates. Lovely. He said she had the accident coming home from work.

These days it's not really insane for a teen to be driving a 4K car.

Do you like money more or GF and family more?
Once you figure that out, the rest will fall into place.

Sorry about the yelling.
I love dogs. A dog in peril is about the only thing that makes me worry.

Did you two have that conversation yet? PS. She wasn't really joking Sincerely, Pink She says she has her budget all done on a spreadsheet at work. I asked her to bring a printout home, so we could compare budgets. All of this was forgotten last week when her 17 year old got into a car accident, ramming into someone from behind on the way home from work. Both airbags deployed, and it looks like she has totaled her 1995 Mustang convertible. Between GF freaking out about her oldest daughter getting into a car accident (and subtly implying what a jerk I am because I didn't jump into a car and drive an hour to calm her down after I found out the 17 yr old was okay), dealing with the insurance company, and making sure the three drivers in the house all have cars to get to work, it seems to have been forgotten. I'm well aware she isn't joking. She is going to find out that this is one argument she isn't going to win. If she wants a pool, she is going to have to pay for it herself. Your house? Tell her you'll make her a deal. You'll provide the land if she provides the pool.

Beer
You know I'm on your side. But this just doesn't sound like a good relationship. You guys haven't ironed out the bumps in the road... and they don't go away on their own. You don't sound like you feel appreciated or respected. Is that the kind of relationship you want to be in?

I didn't get a car worth that amount when I was 17. I was 31 before I got a car that was worth more than 5 or 6 grand. Glad to hear everyone is OK, though. How much is a 1995 Mustang convertible worth in 2015? Its a twenty year old car. Depending on what 1995 Mustang it is exactly, mileage, condition, it might not be worth even $3K to a private buyer or it could be worth $20K or so if it was something cool.
(Convertibles are bad choices as first cars for most first time drivers because in a rollover accident it could be their head literally. Optimist public service announcement. )
The engine only had 49k miles on it. Only one previous owner, an elderly woman who kept it garaged most of the time. If insurance offers anything for the car, it would be for the value of the parts. I've been told that because this particular Mustang is 20 years old, it is considered a classic, but no idea if that is true. GF bought it for $6k, so optimistically hoping they'll be offered $3-$4k for it. I've already had an offer to buy it from a friend who is a big fan of Mustangs.

For someone that works in finance, what kind of household arrangement would you define it? Right now, I'm going with unsustainable.

A 1995 convertible mustang has minimal value. What is the insurance payout if its fully insured? So BG, how much is this going to cost you to replace the mustang with a safe/presentable car for the 17 year old?Is it more than a swimming pool? After all, the bio dad cannot be counted on, I wonder what his take on things are? $0 I'm not putting a single cent toward her getting another car. She can get with her mother and they can decide on a suitable replacement using the insurance money, but I'm not paying for anything. My recommendation that she buy a used truck with a manual transmission because she won't be able to drive and play with her phone (she says she looked down at her phone right before the accident, but wasn't texting ) has been rejected.

So it's the GF's house?
No way would I put money into a pool on property that someone else owns. You guys break up, you can't take that pool with you. And she sure as hell won't pay you back for it if you left.
Her attitude would gripe my ass, too. She wants to put a pool in her backyard, she needs to figure out how she wants to finance it - especially since you aren't even going to use it. Now if you guys get married and move into a home you jointly own, at least you would own half the value of the pool and house if you guys split up.

Does the 17 year old have a job? The insurance must be horrendous plus now an at fault accident complete with a ticket. So higher rates. Lovely. She works as a lifeguard during the summer. She works a lot of hours, but it is minimum wage. I think forcing her to pay the increase in insurance is a good idea, but we'll see what GF thinks. I destroyed two cars when I was 18-19, and my parents were patient with me. GF apparently had an interesting history with cars, too. I want 17 yr old to understand what happened can't be repeated, but I am not going to punish her for having an accident. I can't come down too hard on her, because it would be hypocritical to treat her in a harsher manner than what I grew up with. That said, after my second car died, I went three years through college with no car. If she tears up a second car, she's going to re-discover the joys of walking everywhere.

So you'll end up paying for that instead! It doesn't really matter what it's "ear marked" for. The bottom line is YOU are paying the price.

My first 3 cars had manual transmissions. I could drive and eat an ice cream sundae. I'm pretty sure a manual transmission wouldn't have prevented me being able to drive and text. She just needs to leave her phone alone while she's driving, regardless of the type of vehicle. That should be one of the lessons she learns from this car accident.

WWBG's wife has champagne tastes and a tap water budget, and looked to WWBG as her sugar daddy. He gave in all the time and racked up some pretty impressive credit card debt. His bitterness shows through.

BUT IS THE DOG ALL RIGHT? Dog seems to have improved. However, I let him out an hour ago, and his urine is black, which indicates hematuria, aka blood in the urine. Might be internal bleeding, might be an infection. GF is calling her vet.

You really need to sit down with her and have that budgeting conversation if you want the situation to improve. You need to start contributing fixed rent and utilities and get away from your contribution being completely variable "fun" items that you decide upon individually.
As long as you have zero rent plus random discretionary purchases, she will continue to ask for more and more discretionary purchases since that is your official contribution to the household.

I agree that Beergut will end up paying for the car, even if it's indirectly.
