Badlands, Wall Drug, Corn Palace... What more could we ask for? LOL Custer State Park, west of Rapid City, is fabulous. I think they have tent camping (there are nice cabins, too), but the buffalo/bison roam right up to the cabins, so I might be a touch nervous with just a tent between me and them. As long as you don't pass through there during the Sturgis motorcycle rally, you should have no trouble finding a place to stay. Custer is gorgeous, but it's where my ex and I went on our first vacation together back in the crazy in love stage. I'm leery of becoming an emotional wreck. We'll definitely take a spin on Needles Highway even if we don't camp there, but that would be a good place to stay near Rapid City. Maybe I'd be fine...

Depending where you stayed then, could you try one of the other areas of the park this time? When we went we stayed one night at Sylvan Lake (and it snowed. in May.), which is where the lake scene of National Treasure 2 was filmed, I believe. And Archie, I'm glad you're okay, even if the van isn't!

So glad you and your family are okay. Driving while sleepy is extremely dangerous. There have been a lot of studies showing it is just as (if not more) dangerous than driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. So glad you are only suffering a small financial loss.

Mine just ask to go camping. And to Bay Beach (cheap amusement park mostly for kids under 10 or so) so we're going to Mom's trailer this weekend. Assuming I don't get sicker. And Archie, get yourself and your wife some damn life insurance. I'm glad you are all ok. We have a campground set up in the back yard with the camper and fire ring and older son goes camping constantly with the scouts...so just camping didn't qualify as "vacation worthy", it had to be somewhere cool. There's got to be something cool closer. Have the kids already been to Boundary Waters area? Alexandria, MN?

There's got to be something cool closer. I read this and my first thought was: What about the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota? I mean if Weird Al sings about it, it's got to be cool, right? What about the St. Croix area? I've been dying to go there. Bayfield and the Apostle Islands is about 5 hours away from you. Camping on a national lakeshore would be pretty cool.

The biggest ball of twine is really in MN? LOL Figures. I've been wanting to go to Frank Kovaks homemade planetarium near Rhinelander. Astronomy crazy older son wants to too, but he figures we can go there "any weekend". Camping on the lakes is cool, but we've done it. A lot. At least older son and I have. Younger son only has once and probably doesn't remember. Going to the North Shore/Boundary Waters area was an annual thing. Hadn't thought of St. Croix. What's to do there? I was going to go to school at River Falls and staked it out quite a bit back then, but never went back after that.

There's National Park Shore Line, Interstate State Park, Biking and a fair amount of weekend festivals, etc around St. Croix. No Bison, though. Have you been to Pipestone National Park? We thought it was cool. What about Isle Royale National Park? It might be pretty far of a drive, though. What about Door County? There's state parks, small little towns with ice cream shops and candy stores, and goats on top of a restaurant. There's quaint little museums and at least one light house tour to take. Opportunities for biking and hiking...

Well, he's been to Yellowstone too. A couple times. They're so hell bent on it. Older is obsessed with the geothermal science and younger wants to see what "real" mountains look like. I keep correcting him that the Mississippi River bluffs are not mountains and he doesn't buy it.

The thing is the little is not going to be much good on any long hikes and can't ride a bike yet, so I'd have to be on paved roads that I can pull a trailer, and don't have anyone to tag team leaving him behind at camp with. If it was just me and older it would be a lot easier. I should just suck it up and take them to the Dells. My idea of hell, but they'd both be happy.

Hahaha. I was thinking about this too. Let me know if you decide to go. If we're around, we could meet you there if that's something you are interested in. My kids are itching to go.

IF you decide on Door Co, let me know. We're heading up there this weekend. The kids are desperate for Bay Beach.

No you don't. You're stalling. Maybe but I don't want to add any more fixed costs It doesn't cost much. It shows your wife and kids that you love them when you have the unexpected happen.

That's a really stupid excuse. I'm unemployed and I still went out and purchased life insurance. I tacked it onto my car insurance bundle. It costs me $20 a month, big whoop. Eve unemployed I can scrape together an extra $20 a month.
Unless you two have some sort of major health issues that will cause you to be denied or have sky high premiums there is absolutely no reason for you not to get it.

Just do it, Archie!
I did it earlier this year - my DH is afraid of needles and was pissed about having to get his blood taken. Then even he said it was easy and he didn't feel anything.
Mine is $18/month (under 30, super healthy), his is $35/month (over 35, overweight). $350k/20 year

We got 25 year policies when we were 31 and 30 I think, both healthy, $325/year for DH, $440/year for me (I had a parent die young) for 500k each. I don't think that's too bad.

I was 41 when I got my current policy. It's only $356/year for 400K. Then I pay $200/year for 250K on the ex. I'm hoping that in 18 years when they expire I can bitch about never needing to use them and what a waste of money it was. But, I really cannot die which is why I pay for this insurance...to assure it will never happen.

Archie, I can't believe your wife is remotely ok with you not having life insurance and vice versa. You have young children. It's asinine. Seriously. Both of you need it. No one is going to care for your children out of the goodness of their hearts if she dies and if you die, who is going to support 4 people and send 3 to college or trade school? Both sets of your parents? I can see huge resentment by siblings if grandparents of your children are paying for their care because you didn't bother caring for them yourself.
