Glad everybody's OK.
If your kids are like mine, they'll never let you forget this. For the next 5-10 years, at the least opportune time, they'll bring it up. When meeting new friends or at a getting to know your teacher night... "hey, Daddy - remember the time when you crashed the car and we got to talk to the police officer?" It will be fantastic. My 6 year old is already talking about writing in her weekend journal about it and telling her class at Monday morning meeting.

You don't even have to actually do anything wrong to have kids do that. Mine had a set of friends who were always disparaging my driving to their mother. They would look behind them after passing through a light and say, 'you went through a red'... Uhm, that's the opposite light sweetie. Once they told their mother that they had been in their first accident... That Id driven into a ditch/field...? I couldn't even recall what they might be referring to. I'm guessing I drove onto the shoulder. It's possible. We have a lot of Amish, tractors, etc out here and sometimes you'd rather be on the shoulder than smack up against another moving object or too close to a horse.

I have driven a lot when I am tired and have always been fine, but obviously not this time. Definitely scary to think how much worse it could have been though... need to get my shit together. I'm so sorry. When the peanut refused to sleep, it got so I refused to drive in bad weather. Made DH do it. I didn't trust my decision making judgement/reflexes on not much sleep when it was snowing fairly heavily. I didn't want to hurt my kids or someone else.

I don't know how old your youngest is but to hire a full time nanny that can drive and is legal is a pretty penny. Even if it's 8-6 Monday thru Friday. Plus a cleaner and someone to do some laundry. Most people I know that have families and house cleaners have the beds stripped and new sheets ready to be put on. At least one or two loads can be done while cleaning. This does not stop the need for other laundry to be done, meals to be shopped for, and all the other fun X 3 kids. I had a friend get fed up with teaching and became a nanny. She did NOTHING but care for small child and got 400 a week and the parents were grateful. She did clean any mess the child made but that was it. Back when I had the one child, it was estimated that it would cost 20k a year for someone to care for the child M-F so I had a policy on myself for 100k. It's cheaper when they're school aged of course. But if you have 3 under 5 or 6, your wife needs a policy too. A big one.

Just transferred $2k from our daughter's account to our checking account. Maybe we weren't doing so well containing costs, either.

Is your wife still expecting her paychecks to start in a few weeks? Yes. Beginning of July. She checked again.

The important thing is that everyone's okay and that you've started the application on that life insurance policy.

Archie - please be careful. Where would all the crass jokes come from if something happened to you?!

My kids want me to take them to Yellowstone the end of the month. My biggest worry is falling asleep at the wheel on a drive that long. I've done a lot of long out west trips, but always with another adult in the car to either swap driving or at least talk to. My first ex hated to drive and always let me, but he at least kept my brain engaged the entire time. Mine just ask to go camping. And to Bay Beach (cheap amusement park mostly for kids under 10 or so) so we're going to Mom's trailer this weekend. Assuming I don't get sicker. And Archie, get yourself and your wife some damn life insurance. I'm glad you are all ok.

We have a campground set up in the back yard with the camper and fire ring and older son goes camping constantly with the scouts...so just camping didn't qualify as "vacation worthy", it had to be somewhere cool. There's got to be something cool closer.

Absolutely. Find a friend to go with you. Yellowstone is fantastic & I am sure you can find someone to share the ride. I drove to the other side of it (because DD1 was living near it) on my own. That was a long, boring drive & I told DD I was never coming to see her again after that trip, so she better move closer The park was incredible, but I would definitely want someone with me on a drive that long! I do two 4 hour round trips each weekend & had to start asking DD2 to ride with me because I was getting really tired. I need someone talking at me or to share the driving with so I don't get too tired on the way back. There were a couple trips on my own where I stopped at rest areas & just closed my eyes for a while. I've been there twice. Last time in 2009 when older son was 7. He's 13 now and really wants to go back, but I keep saying maybe we should wait a few years until you're a driver too. It gets really dull when they're sitting in the back of the van watching movies or napping. It's about 17 hours or so. Ugh. I would stop and stay at a hotel one night. You can typically find a decent hotel on the road for $60 - $75.

First night in Sioux Falls (about 4 hours) second night in Rapid City (check out Rushmore), then Yellowstone the third, although getting to the park at night we'll never get a campsite. I was hoping I could get my Marriott credit card sign on bonus hotel points by then, but I think they wait 6-8 weeks to apply them. We could always sleep in the van. The kids won't care.

Glad all are ok. What's the van fix up going to cost? We have $1000 deductible, so that should be all we have out of pocket. We haven't heard back from the insurance adjuster yet and the body shop is not looking at the it until the adjuster gets there.

I think they have tent camping (there are nice cabins, too), but the buffalo/bison roam right up to the cabins, so I might be a touch nervous with just a tent between me and them. As long as you don't pass through there during the Sturgis motorcycle rally, you should have no trouble finding a place to stay.
