Nobody is mocking her for being mentally ill. What's funny is that she's running for POTUS. That's the absurdity.

I can't speak for all people, but humour is just as often a reaction to absurdity as it is wanton malice. Take the videos of Tami Stainfield in the "Vote Independent" thread. The poor woman is mentally ill, and (take note, swamp) my life has been touched by a friend with paranoid delusions, but I don't begrudge anyone a few rofls at Ms. Stainfield's expense. The absurdity is funny. The absurdity of a man named "Bruce" having to dream up a woman's name because, of all reasons, he's going to chop and drug himself up to look like a woman, struck me as funny. It used to be the stuff of sitcom hijinks where "Danny" dresses in drag to become "Danny- elle... *ahem* My name is Danielle." in order to sneak into the sorority house to discover the girls' game plan. Of all the problems faced by all the people in all the world, you smilingly shake your head and wonder "How do people get themselves into something like that?" Virgil, are you intentionally confusing the difference between transgender and dressing up as the opposite sex (for a few hours) for some silly plan?
If it is the chemicals telling you to post this, perhaps you should visit your wonderful Canadian healthcare system and see if they can get those suckers back in balance.
You're taking the analogy much further than intended. I was pointing out that humour is a natural reaction to absurdity, whether it's Tami Stainfield, Bruce Jenner, or Danny McHijinx. Since certain people don't share my personal conception of absurdity, Reply #50 regrettably made a few hearts bleed. Seeing as my critics are the last ones with any right to criticize me for insensitivity, I think my Reply #70 to be a sufficient admission of guilt.

Why don't you tell us a joke about her coming out of her cave and seeing her shadow? That's always good for a few cheap laughs. ETA: Oooh! How about the one about the bus full of nuns driving off a cliff? That one's inspired.

Who the hell are you to call transgenderism absurd? Again....where did you get your degree in psychiatry? Do tell.

See Replies #66, #68, and #80. Why I consider the issue of Mr. Jenner's name change absurd? See the final sentence of Reply #84. Why do I find the absurdity funny? Ask my brain. Where did I receive my psychiatry degree? At the ATA School of Bad Counterarguments, the same place you got yours.

I can't believe this thread's gotten down to ridiculous jokes and comparisons to comedy sketches. You forgot to mention Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in the movie "Some Like it Hot".
It's safe to say, Virgil, that nothing is going to get you to accept or understand Bruce or others who are like him (both male & female).
It goes against your beliefs and moral compass.
The subject seems to make you uncomfortable - which might explain your attempts at humor.
So I'm wondering why you're devoting so much time to a thread which has a topic so repulsive to you.

I know you feel uncomfortable with the topic, but it's no reason to mock his name or compare his struggle to a Benny Hill skit. You may find his torment over the years a real laugh riot, but I feel for the man, and wish him all the best.

I don't know where you get "repulsive" from. I devoted time to the thread because many other posters devoted time to replying to my earlier comments. Up until this latest page, it seemed like all but a few were enjoying a good, rousing debate. I'll leave you in peace. We're on the "TV shows" forum, after all. In parting, may I suggest: try rereading my posts imagining that Mr. Jenner was obsessed with surgically altering himself to look like a specific celebrity. He desperately wants to look like George Clooney, for example. From the minute he saw Mr. Clooney on TV as a young child, he was desperately, inexplicably obsessed with looking like him. It's "who he is". I realize you draw a distinction between the two, but imagine you didn't, and then re-read my posts. I think that will give you a better context for understanding them. If you're understanding them properly, you shouldn't get "repulsive" or anything close to it. Adieu.

I didn't know you had a psychiatry degree. I thought you were an RN. Anyway... In response to your comment: Although I don't "feel" for Mr. Jenner, for what it's worth, I shouldn't have joked about his name. I'm sure he has enough problems to deal with already. I apologize for causing offense. Adieu again.

Virgil, you might want to see if POM will help you with your humor. I think most of us would prefer the quirky Virgil humor of the past versus the insult humor or oops sorry I mocked your painfully personal story.
FWIW, I need some POM humor lessons too.

Virgil, its unlikely I'll reread your posts with your particular slant. Did Mr. Jenner share he was planning plastic surgery as part of his transformation? All I know he is not sure on the typical surgery transgenders may or may not do, which is naughty bit conversion.

FWIW, I need some POM humor lessons too. The particular bit of satire you're referring to wasn't intended to be funny, and there are some things you should know before you pass judgment. If you truly care, you can send me a PM. Regardless, I shall endeavour to make my humour in the upcoming months more of the "quirky" variety.

I promise we'll be far more supportive and understanding than you have been. Wouldn't you be embarrassed if I told you my wife had died and I'd lost my job. No, my life is no more and no less troubled than it usually is. I think what you may be noticing is a combination of: i) with Paul now showing up only sporadically, ValueBuy and I are the only socially conservative posters left with any significant post volume, and 15-on-1 debates tend to make the 1 seem a bit recalcitrant, and ii) March found the boards spammed with no fewer than seven (I counted) separate threads on religious freedoms vs. gay rights in the US, and I participated in three of them.

I would pay money to see weltschmerz's face as she read that article. You've hit the nail on the head, Optimist! What we need is a good, hard right Blazer on the board. Read that article and tell me I don't sound like a cowed, bleeding heart wimp of a conservative by comparison.

You don't sound cowed or bleeding heart at all to me. If I'd known you didn't discriminate, I'd have gone on longer about Mr. Jenner's "perverse, bastardized notion of synthetic femininity", or the "depravity and insanity" of the Americans praising him. Consider (ibid.): As the doctor points out, “transgenders” have a suicide rate 20 times higher than the general population — after surgery. Naturally, we’re told the astronomically high rates of suicide, drug abuse, and depression among gender confused people can be blamed on “bullying,” but this is a convenient and dishonest assumption. The truth is, “transgenders” are plagued with a mental delusion that makes it difficult for them to accept reality, which may tempt them to permanently escape it. The best thing we can do is help them to accept the world for what it is and themselves for who they are. The worst thing we can do is play along with a fantasy that’s clearly causing them immense torment and pain. That's one of... like... fifty arguments I didn't make that Walsh does. Did I accuse you of perpetuating Mr. Jenner's torment? No. Did I accuse you of depravity and insanity? No. Did I accuse you of the other 49 things Walsh does? No. You guys got powder puff Virgil, not a real conservative. You're getting off easy.

Hmmm...interesting. I'd think that if you truly felt that way, you wouldn't be bringing the subject of Him up so much.....more than anybody else almost. Even when nobody else mentions Him. If not a belief, maybe a strange obsession....or denial. Don't know but it's strange. Seems like you are mad at Him to me. Otherwise, you wouldn't be giving Him so much press! I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Nice try, well not really....

You know 40 years ago Bruccie (without the man muscles), might have made a decent looking lady.
Maybe he is just trying to wear women's clothing (laddies, I have to admit...I'm jealous, you have so many more clothing options than us guys).
I suspect that it is true that a woman can get trapped in a man's body and vice versa. God can't always be paying attention, sometimes he/she messes up. But it adds to the flavor of this bizarre thing called humanity.

As far as "just trying to wear womens' clothing" - have you been paying attention? It's not just a matter of playing dress-up.

A lot of people don't "get" what transgender is. I suspect that's because a lot of people don't believe one can successfully change gender.

And then there are people like me who don't care at all. It's his life, and as long as he isn't hurting other people I'm perfectly happy to let him live it however he wants.
