I will wear a belt soon as I can. I missed that a lot and think blouses tucked in and a nice belt looks so good.
I don't feel I'm reduced enough yet to do so.
BUT I am wearing my size 12's today, so I'm getting a thrill out of that!! I have to say, it makes me sad how harsh you are on yourself about your size. There isn't a rule that you can't wear a belt, or anything for that matter, until you're skinny enough. I'm a size 12. I'm sure some people are horrified when I wear yoga pants in public. IDGAF. Me and my size 14 ass wear yoga pants in public all the time. IDGAF either.

milee, you are on FIRE today! I'm sitting here in my pajamas trying to catch up on work in between cooking for a party and doing projects with my boys who are home on Spring Break. In other words, I live in a glass house and am flinging rocks left and right.

I have some plain-ass turtlenecks. I dare say, they are timeless. Some middle of the road jeans could probably be considered timeless as well. Maybe very basic and kind of boring is timeless? (Otherwise, I'd better get rid of my turtlenecks so I can turn around and buy identical ones next year. I'm not getting rid of my jeans--it's too hard to find ones that fit well.) But, yeah, most clothes probably aren't really timeless. Even though it looks like the 80's stuff I used to wear as a teen is coming back, it is slightly different. I wonder if I still have any of the old stuff at my mom's.

But you're being funny while you're doing it, so that's ok. I live in my jeans and t shirts and would give some people crap about what they think is stylish. Just because I don't wear "designer" stuff doesn't mean I can't spot fulgy when I see it. I still wish I had a picture of this little old lady I saw once. Red sweater with white polka dots, a pleated red mini skirt, a hat, some tights..... I forget the shoes. It was awful and awesome all at once.

If you are into timeless clothing, its unlikely you own a banana colored pantsuit from any time period. (That stuff is for trendy types. ) I seem to remember a particular YM discussion where something like this was claimed.
I also specifically remember one thread where I realized how differently people picture clothing, even when using the exact same terminology. The person kept referring to a "Little Black Dress" to be worn to a dressy occasion. But when she posted an actual picture, the dress had full length sleeves; was made of heavy knit looking material; fell in a full, droopy skirt to below the knees and had an unflattering neckline. In other words, it looked more like something an ancient dowager aunt would wear to a funeral. Not exactly what I think of when I think "Little Black Dress" other than that it was indeed a dress and was black.
We all have different perceptions of clothing and even commonly used descriptive phrases often fall short. Clothing and fashion is weird stuff.
I guess I missed that discussion. Yes, I agree everyone has their own definition so sometimes one person's timeless would not fall into a timeless category by most who believe there are pieces that can be called so.
I do think there are pieces that can be worn for years, but much depends on the item itself plus the person who wears it.

Otherwise, I'd better get rid of my turtlenecks so I can turn around and buy identical ones next year
Unless you are a slave to super trendy fashions (look in teen wear to get an idea of what I am talking about) you are not going to have to replace your wardrobe every year.
If your items are 10+ years old, even if they are "classics" you should examine them and probably replace them. Depending on what it is you may get a few more years out of wearing it but eventually you'll be dated.
Like I said before dark wash jeans will never go out of style, but trying to pass off a pair of dark wash jeans from 1985 as "classic" isn't going to work. Trying to pass off a pair of dark wash jeans from the 1970's as "classic" will not work.
It's the wash/color of the jeans that is timeless. The cut/shape of the jeans will have changed dramatically.

No, I'm talking middle of the road--not low-rise, not high-waisted, just in the middle. Also, not skinny-leg, not flare-led, just straight-leg. I know jean styles get really trendy, but IMO, most people shouldn't go the skinny-jean route. That includes present-day me. Teenager me rocked the skinny jeans back in the old days when I was fairly skinny. There were also way too many that tried to go with low-rise jeans and showed off their muffin tops.

www.insideoutstyleblog.com/2012/11/when-is-it-time-to-let-go-of-the-trends-you-love.html I remember acid-wash/faded jeans being very popular in the 80's. I'm not sure where you get that dark wash jeans were--they weren't around these parts, that's for sure. ETA: You're right, 70's jeans that were flare leg were totally out in the 80's. However, you could get normal straight-leg jeans and "peg" them. Roll them up tightly around your ankles. You know what else was popular in the 80's? Pleats. You could still get away with plain ass clothes in the 80's though, as long as they didn't go in the complete opposite direction that was the 70's.

You must not have seen that discussion over on SS. It was a quite heated debate. It ended with me sharing the "classic" blue velvet pantsuit I found in a grab bag at the local vintage shop.
I just thought people were taking the classic Hepburn look too literally and the posters were referring quite simply to the overall look of elegant trousers and blouse
I wasn't taking it literally, just pointing out that even Hepburn has over time become "dated". You can find similar items in 2015 but they will look like they are from 2015. Trends come and go but when they come back they are always slightly different.
Hanging onto pieces that are decades old isn't being "classic" it's being dated.
Some items will last long enough to make it to becoming vintage pieces, which are a class of their own. Those are rare items though which is why they command the price they do.
Like Milee said the majority of your wardrobe, even your "classic" pieces will eventually become dated and you should upgrade.
Yes I missed the SS discussion. Right now I don't have the funds to update so I'm going to be more out of fashion than usual. I'm OK with it.
There are a couple of women from my church who used to work in NYC and had/have some very old clothes that they would wear from time to time. They both knew what to save and how to use it with current clothing or accessories.
Some of us don't really care if we are wearing the 2015 version or 2005 version or earlier if it works for us and only screams dated to those very fashion oriented. There's some "fashion" I see in Walmart photos that I think have never really been in, just available for purchase. I think that can be true of clothes during most of my lifetime. Sometimes my body type and my preference really doesn't work with current fashion so I skip it. I've never liked the tunic look especially coupled with leggings for me, so its a skip no matter what round we are on. Ponchos are also a habitual no.

This probably was never in fashion and hopefully never will be. I love the comment on People of Walmart - something to the effect are you trying to scare predators by convincing them you are poisonous?
There are worse things than wearing dated clothes. At least to me.

Ok, I have a confession to make...
DH and I had a date with our good friends who came in from out of town to see us. I decided that well, maybe, I ummm should have something besides my nice sweatshirt to wear.
Went to a store that specializes in my body type, looked the sales lady straight in the eye and told her I was out of my element and was trusting her to push me out of my comfort zone.
One strapless push up bra (and I'm not lacking in that area gals) and some outofmycomfortzone tops and camie's (sp?) later and I had a few new outfits. Put one on to go out in and my DD gave me the once over and told me I looked really nice.
Got compliments from the friends also.
As far as DH, I had to institute an, ummmm - bubble rule. Don't break the bubble around me (we were in public!!!).
Sad thing, I was not comfortable in that outfit all night. It just didn't feel like me.

Just like either Hepburn sister - he'd look good in a paper bag. Or no bag at all.
But that doesn't mean his clothes are timeless or classic. He'd have to stand up and turn around for us to know that. Oh, and bend over. And maybe flex a few times. Or just stand there. Or maybe lean on something. And uh, just stand there a little more... What was I talking about?

This whole thread is reminding me a little of the Loony psycho doc thread. Just like alcoholics, people who wear weird stuff are unable to self-diagnose and will defend to the death the appropriateness of their kit, no matter what the evidence shows.
