I will wear a belt soon as I can. I missed that a lot and think blouses tucked in and a nice belt looks so good.
I don't feel I'm reduced enough yet to do so.
BUT I am wearing my size 12's today, so I'm getting a thrill out of that!! I have to say, it makes me sad how harsh you are on yourself about your size. There isn't a rule that you can't wear a belt, or anything for that matter, until you're skinny enough. I'm a size 12. I'm sure some people are horrified when I wear yoga pants in public. IDGAF.

I think you are all being a little harsh on Blonde Granny. I interpreted her Hepburn comments to mean that a well cut pair of trousers and blouse will always be in style, simply that it subtly changes over the years. I didn't think she meant that the exact same outfit would work today. Thanks and yes that is exactly what I meant. I can't wear high waisted pants as I only have 5-6" between my waist and the area under my boob. I also wear petite pants, if not the crotch on most pants I swear hits close to my knees.....
I also prefer to spend more on clothes that are more classic pieces and more expensive as they seem to be made better and fit better, let alone wear much longer. I also mix & match my pieces and stick to just 3-4 colors so that my clothes are interchangeable. Remember, I'm the one that just did a 14 day cruise with clothes packed in a carry on bag.
I love fashion jewelry and wear necklaces almost everyday. But pearls...oh how I love them. I have a real strand that are 24" that DH gave me for our 25th anniversary many years ago. A pearl necklace and earrings are also timeless. I would rather be remembered for being well dressed and appropriately dressed than be remembered because I was dressed like a circus clown.
I love Ralph Lauren clothes and another 10-15 # weight loss and I'll be able to be wearing them again. Both RL and Jones of New York cut their clothes a little smaller than I feel comfortable wearing. But I do love the look of both designers.

It's not just that styles change (some of them very subtly, but they still change), it's that public reaction and media forums to discuss styles have also changed. Back when this picture first appeared, it might have been printed in a glossy magazine that took 3 months to produce. The caption would say something like "Katharine Hepburn Looking Elegant Before Dinner" and maybe have a short paragraph fawning about her latest adventures yet implying that she always looks this way no matter if she's pulling weeds in the garden or doing laundry.
If this picture were to appear now, it would be on TMZ and probably have been snapped the night before. The accompanying blurb would go something like this:
Hepburn Strikes a Rigid Pose and Fixes the Paparazzi With Her Imperious, Steely Glare Before Having Her Bodyguards Beat Them Up
Katharine, sweetie, you know we adore you, right? Your cheekbones are the stuff of legend and your figure makes runway models feel fat. You could look good wearing a paper bag. We are huge, huge fans. So we say this with love... girlfriend, you need a new stylist! Your blouse is such a gorgeous color and material that we could probably ignore the fact that the cut makes it look like you stole it from an Amish lady. But those pants. [Shaking our head sadly because there is no gentle way to break this to you.] There is a reason that pleated pants went out of style. Anything that makes such a beautiful lady look like she has a foot long camel toe should be burned! We're not sure if the Low Toe fashion was ever really a thing and we should all work hard to keep it that way.

I don't get why it's now fashionable to dress like a well-off vagrant. The big boxy shirt, scarf, and skinny jeans/leggings look does not work for most women, but yet that is 90% of what they're pushing for my age group and younger. I like classic, flattering clothing with some interesting or trendy bits thrown in. Lol, I bought two new pairs of Airwalk boots (ugg knockoff) in December I love the look! Give me a pair of skinny jeans, my boots and a big sweater anyday and I am a happy camper A cute scarf just makes sense, I can wrap it over my hair when I put the top down on my Wrangler Are those the ones made out of dog?

NO!!! All fake! Manmade material! Not that I don't wear wool, but at least that grows back and doesn't hurt the sheep.

Anyway I digress and sure clothes go out of style, but you could find the very same thing I wore in the stores today
At a glance, maybe. I own a retro jacket from the 80's that I found on Etsy. At first glance a couple weeks ago I saw the same jacket at JCP. Upon looking closer the jacket at JCP is NOT the same thing. If you lined up my jacket with the jacket from JCP you'd be able to figure out which one is from the 80's.
Just b/c something looks similar to what you wore doesn't mean it is the same. Trends come and go but they are always slightly different from the originals.
If you are into vintage then by all means wear Hepburn's clothes. But don't insist you are wearing timeless classics, you're not.
If you want to be modern then you need to take the look and find similar trends in today's market. The clothes will have the essence of Hepburn but will fit this decade.
"Classics" eventually go out of style just like everything else. They may take longer but anything that is 10-15 years old is either out of style or on it's way to becoming so.
There IS a middle ground between hanging onto stuff that is decades old and insisting you're still in style b/c it is a "classic" and wearing every new fashion trend that comes onto the market.
I have found some gorgeous vintage clothes at thrift shops. I don't give a crap about "trends" or "in style". I wear what I feel good in, what I feel beautiful in. I don't jump on the "au courant" bandwagon. If everyone wants to wear boyfriend shirts or Ugg boots, more power to them. It's not for me. I get a lot of compliments on the way I dress, so I must be doing something right.

Question: Why is it okay and a badge of honor to bash people who care about style, but milee and I are "too harsh" for examining the flawed logic in the assumption that Hepburn's look is classic and will forever be in style?

There is a completely ridiculous, yet staunchly held, belief amongst many fine YM'ers that anyone who cares about fashion or looking good in any way is frivolous, foolish, a shopaholic, spendthrift, values "things" over "experiences", lets money just fall through their fingers, will die a wretched death after starving to death because they can no longer afford the generic cat food they've been subsisting on. You get the drift. Also, if you wear fashionable clothes you will be "remembered for looking like a clown". LOL. And anyone who wears makeup slathers it all over their face and looks like that fat lady from Drew Carey's show.

I happen to like vintage. I currently have three pieces and I am looking for more. But there is a difference between me choosing vintage pieces to incorporate into my wardrobe and me hanging onto clothing that is 10-20 years out of date based on the assumption it'll come back around again.
How many people actually have a wardrobe made up totally of high quality timeless pieces that are worth hanging onto for decades?
Not many I am betting. If they did then vintage pieces wouldn't be able to sell for as high as some of they do.
Also, if you wear fashionable clothes you will be "remembered for looking like a clown". LOL
::heads out to get rubber chicken and bicycle horn to complete my look::

Dude is SO close to pulling that mess off! It's all in the eyes. They say "fuck yeah, I'm wearing this! What of it?" It's the turquoise bracelet that pushes it over the edge.

Oh, I can totally get behind lazy and cheap. Not caring is also fine (in some circumstances, anyway - there are occasions when you really should care and make an effort). No big deal to be real and own up to something like that - if clothing isn't your thing, you hate to shop, don't care, don't want to spend the money, comfort is top priority, love your clothes so much you can't bear to part with them, whatever. That's one thing. And those are truthful reasons. But I do think sometimes people try to camouflage one of those sentiments by claiming their 20 year old clothes don't need to be replaced because they're "timeless classics." Very, very few clothes are timeless enough to look good 10 or 20 years after they're made. And the few that do are usually fairly expensive couture pieces or a rare exception. The rest of the 20 year old clothes look exactly like what they are - plain enough to not be immediately offensive but still upon more than a casual glance - dated and not in style. The waist may be in the wrong place, the width may be slightly off, the overall fit may be different... 99% of the time, there's enough that's changed that it's not timeless or a classic - it's just dated. And if it's a look you love and understand it's dated but still love it because it's flattering on you or makes you feel fantastic, then go for it, own it and be fierce! But don't give us that crap about your 30 year old banana colored pantsuit being timeless, classy and still in fashion.

If you are into timeless clothing, its unlikely you own a banana colored pantsuit from any time period. (That stuff is for trendy types. )

If this is directed at me, I certainly didn't mean to bash you. Personally, I think it a little odd that there are people on here who don't seem to care at all how they look and just want to schlump around in ugly sweatshirts but it's their life and they probably think it's odd that I wear a different shift dress to work every day! I just thought people were taking the classic Hepburn look too literally and the posters were referring quite simply to the overall look of elegant trousers and blouse.

If you are into timeless clothing, its unlikely you own a banana colored pantsuit from any time period. (That stuff is for trendy types. ) I seem to remember a particular YM discussion where something like this was claimed.
I also specifically remember one thread where I realized how differently people picture clothing, even when using the exact same terminology. The person kept referring to a "Little Black Dress" to be worn to a dressy occasion. But when she posted an actual picture, the dress had full length sleeves; was made of heavy knit looking material; fell in a full, droopy skirt to below the knees and had an unflattering neckline. In other words, it looked more like something an ancient dowager aunt would wear to a funeral. Not exactly what I think of when I think "Little Black Dress" other than that it was indeed a dress and was black.
We all have different perceptions of clothing and even commonly used descriptive phrases often fall short. Clothing and fashion is weird stuff.

You must not have seen that discussion over on SS. It was a quite heated debate. It ended with me sharing the "classic" blue velvet pantsuit I found in a grab bag at the local vintage shop.
I just thought people were taking the classic Hepburn look too literally and the posters were referring quite simply to the overall look of elegant trousers and blouse
I wasn't taking it literally, just pointing out that even Hepburn has over time become "dated". You can find similar items in 2015 but they will look like they are from 2015. Trends come and go but when they come back they are always slightly different.
Hanging onto pieces that are decades old isn't being "classic" it's being dated.
Some items will last long enough to make it to becoming vintage pieces, which are a class of their own. Those are rare items though which is why they command the price they do.
Like Milee said the majority of your wardrobe, even your "classic" pieces will eventually become dated and you should upgrade.
