I don't get why it's now fashionable to dress like a well-off vagrant. The big boxy shirt, scarf, and skinny jeans/leggings look does not work for most women, but yet that is 90% of what they're pushing for my age group and younger. I like classic, flattering clothing with some interesting or trendy bits thrown in. Lol, I bought two new pairs of Airwalk boots (ugg knockoff) in December I love the look! Give me a pair of skinny jeans, my boots and a big sweater anyday and I am a happy camper A cute scarf just makes sense, I can wrap it over my hair when I put the top down on my Wrangler

I don't get why it's now fashionable to dress like a well-off vagrant. It's the Derelicte fashion line from Zoolander.
It's amazing how many times life is starting to imitate the outrageous comedy in movies. Sadly enough, I suspect within a few years we'll all either look like the fat babypeople in WallE (pizza in a cup!) or the morons in Idiocracy at this rate.

I wish I had someone who served as a personal shopper and did my hair. A lady's maid I guess . I always describe my hair as "nice for fancy events". It's curly and manageably frizzy. I can pretty much tell you the % of humidity in the air by looking at my hair. It can look nice but it takes a lot of work. So in the warm weather months it's constantly worn up, I just don't have the energy to spend an hour every morning doing my hair. As for clothes, I hate shopping. So when I find something I like, I buy it in a lot of different colors and move on. So I tend to have the uniform look but it keeps up with the times. Yogiii, we must be related! My hair totally has a mind of it's own, & the humidity determines what I can (or can't) do with it. I've joked for years that if I became famous I'd need someone to do my hair every morning.
And, I would LOVE to have a personal shopper. I hate it when you go into a store, & find something cute, & they're out of your size in the matching pieces.

-hug-hello twin! Yes, I have fond memories waking up as a kid, all sweaty in my bedroom (no a/c), getting up, looking in the mirror and realizing I looked like a cross between Annie and Kramer from Seinfeld. Good times.

I don't do my hair or makeup... unless you count blowdrying it straight or ruffling some gel in to air-dry it and make it wavy. It's long and right down the middle. I wear makeup maybe 10-20x a year tops, for going out to certain things and for concerts I'm playing. I wouldn't say I look like a slob daily but jeez, according to some people, guess I do. I don't give a rat's ass. Style-wise unless I'm at work, I'm in jeans and boots/sneakers and a t-shirt or something cozy. I like wearing dresses to go out once in a while. I'll wear skirts in the summer, casual ones. I just don't care. And, surprise of surprises, I think I look fine the way I dress. Ok, edited to add, I care that I: a) don't have greasy hair, b) don't wear clothes that are too tight for me, and c) don't wear clothes that are ridiculously big on me. That's the extent of how much I care.

You know it's interesting, if only I'd had any confidence to experiment with and become proficient with makeup when I was a teenager I probably would've worn it, since my skin was bad. My skin hasn't been bad for 5-6 years, it calmed down when I was in my mid-late 20s finally.
I do admit if my skin was bad I may have different feelings on wearing makeup daily, foundation at least...

Anyway I digress and sure clothes go out of style, but you could find the very same thing I wore in the stores today
At a glance, maybe. I own a retro jacket from the 80's that I found on Etsy. At first glance a couple weeks ago I saw the same jacket at JCP. Upon looking closer the jacket at JCP is NOT the same thing. If you lined up my jacket with the jacket from JCP you'd be able to figure out which one is from the 80's.
Just b/c something looks similar to what you wore doesn't mean it is the same. Trends come and go but they are always slightly different from the originals.
If you are into vintage then by all means wear Hepburn's clothes. But don't insist you are wearing timeless classics, you're not.
If you want to be modern then you need to take the look and find similar trends in today's market. The clothes will have the essence of Hepburn but will fit this decade.
"Classics" eventually go out of style just like everything else. They may take longer but anything that is 10-15 years old is either out of style or on it's way to becoming so.
There IS a middle ground between hanging onto stuff that is decades old and insisting you're still in style b/c it is a "classic" and wearing every new fashion trend that comes onto the market.

An easy way to have a personal shopped is to buy what is in the ad in the flyer.
As for hair, the pony tail can go a lot of places and be dressed up. Medium long hair can have just a touch by pulling one piece to the side and pinning under the other hair.
A lot of the magazine styles can be duplicated at home with the correct product.
If you are looking for the set, spray, coifure that lasts weeks, see the hair dresser.

To me makeup has helped me to have good skin. In my teens not so much. My mom introduced me to Merle Norman when I was 16 and I have always used it. I protect the skin on my face from sun and weather and everyone says, whether they mean it or not I don't look my age. Maybe they are just being nice, I don't know. But the makeup is mainly to protect it, as I use light amounts. I also many years ago started wearing a hat when working out in the summer in south Texas so that is one reason. Here the winter weather is hard on it too so again I protect it. Makeup and skin care is another great example of one size does NOT fit all. There are no timeless classics that work for everybody. It sounds like you've had good results from Merle Norman... or have good genes so your skincare products didn't matter much. But just like the clothes Audrey Hepburn wore wouldn't look good on most people today, Merle Norman wouldn't be a good skincare choice for many people. Here's an example of a review of their product line from Paula Begoin, who investigates the ingredients in skin care products:
"The free samples are great, but the question is why anyone would be inclined to try Merle Norman skin-care products. Although there have been some improvements since the Cosmetics Cop Team last reviewed this brand, much of what was problematic back then is still around today, and still problematic - and that's not good news for your skin.
Across the board, the biggest issue is jar packaging. Several of the moisturizers didn't receive better than a neutral face rating because they are poorly packaged. For a company claiming to be cutting edge, they somehow missed, or chose to ignore, the research showing how state-of-the-art ingredients deteriorate when exposed to light and air. In addition, repeatedly sticking your fingers into a product isn't sanitary, and further degrades the ingredients. What good is adding a lot of antioxidants and other plant extracts or vitamins to a product if their efficacy is all but gone within a week or two of opening?
There are other weak spots to watch out for, too, especially in the Luxiva Changing Skin and Luxiva Clear Complexion lines. Merle Norman also sells a group of antiquated products that are little more than cold cream and super-greasy moisturizers. These are as far removed as you can get from what we know about what skin needs to look younger and function in a healthy manner. Using many of Merle Norman's products is like using a typewriter instead of a computer.
As far as what's to like, you'll find several well-formulated cleansers and toners, some reliable AHA and BHA products, and an impressive lip balm, and most of the SPF-rated products provide broad-spectrum protection. Ultimately, it wouldn't be wise to try to assemble a comprehensive skin-care routine from Merle Norman, but if you focus on their better products you'll do okay. "

I tried Bare Minerals b/c everyone swore it was the best make-up they had ever used and it "improved their skin!"
My face started turning red when I used it and kept getting worse the longer I insisted on trying it. I threw it away, skin went back to normal.
There is something in Bare Minerals I am allergic too despite it being "all natural".
When I say that to people who recommend it to me they keep insisting I must be wrong because the products are so great for them. Uhh .I think I know my own skin better than you do.
I use Covergirl BB cream. It evens out my skin tone but doesn't look heavy. Best of all no allergic reaction and I've been using it for two years now. Hope they don't change the formula.

A good fitting pair of crepe pants that are lined and have a fitted waistband with a belt , IMHO will never go out of style. A 19 y/o girl who is a size 4 or 6 will look great in a pair of legging or jegging. Put the same outfit on a 70 y/o salt & pepper haired grandmother....oh please, you can include her in the photos of People of Walmart.
People have always been judged by their appearance, is it right? not really, but it's a fact of life. A person only has one chance to make a first impression, and if I see someone dressed as a street vagrant just because it's "on trend" I've just formed my opinion.
The older gentleman pictured in this thread? Since when are pants supposed to drag on the ground? yes, I see it all the time, and it still look bad. Back to the photo....the hat on his head actuates how short he is, and his suit jacket is pulling around his pudgy middle. His overcoat overwhelms his short stature . In other words, no matter how well he thinks he is dressed, he looks dumpy and out of his element. In fact, he looks silly.
Oh lordy, just call me the chief of the forum fashion police.

I like this, but dress like this... I think girls look horrible when they where any kind of hat (unless it's a casual baseball cap). The top right pic is an example of that girl probably thinking she looks hot and she really looks like a doofus.

Hey, I have a suggestion. All those who think they are best dressed should post pictures of themselves so we can see how the rest of us should dress. I should add that as long as I am at home I am dressed better than most!! But when I leave the house there are 50 million people better dressed than me. So lets see the pictures!! I truly need some fashion help for stepping outside and mixing with the masses.

Who said anything about a 70 year old needing to wear a pair of leggings or jeggings? If they don't look good on you then don't wear them. If they aren't age appropriate don't wear them.
Hepburn's pants are out of style, you will look like you stepped out of the 1940s. You can find similar trends but the pants are not going to be exactly the same. One will be dated the other will not be.
Again there is a middle ground between hanging onto older items insisting they will never go out of style and being a 70 year old wearing jeggings and a bandeau.
Here we go an excellent blog post on the subject. Look at the sewing patterns at the bottom to get what I am saying.

Oh lordy, just call me the chief of the forum fashion police. I haven't worn a belt with a tucked in shirt in about 15 yrs That's OK, it's been about that long since a fitted waistband belted at the waist was in style.
Again, that look does look nice on some people and especially older women (and I'm getting up there, too so that's not a knock) can sometimes look OK in things like high waisted pants that are out of date, but that's different than the pants actually being in style.

Different clothes look good on different people. My friend and I went shopping at the outlet mall this past Saturday. White House/Black Market is my favorite store. We would each come out of our dressing room so the other could see what we had on. At times we had picked the same shirts. What looked good on me, didn't on her and vise versa.

Hepburn's look is "classic" because it is simple and she's also dressing to her body type. It actually has very little to do with the clothes themselves.
Dark wash jeans will never truly be out of "style" but you need to keep in mind which decade those pants came from. The cut of a pair of jeans from 1980 are quite different from a pair in 2015.
The wash is classic, the actual jeans are dated.
Another good blog on the subject

I think you are all being a little harsh on Blonde Granny. I interpreted her Hepburn comments to mean that a well cut pair of trousers and blouse will always be in style, simply that it subtly changes over the years. I didn't think she meant that the exact same outfit would work today.

would love to use mascara but it bothers my eyes. They will tear and get infected, I had to quit, I will for just a short time on some special occasion and come home and clean it off
Ever try fake eyelashes? You'd get the same effect but wouldn't have to worry about an allergic reaction.
