Got it - I thought "kids with academic ability in the lowest quintile" meant that it was kids with low academic ability. Poor sentence. We should burn down the schools.

I wrote that sentence very poorly. I get that there can never be equality of outcome but I would like to see more equality in terms of opportunity. OTOH I contribute to the problem. This is true, and I am okay with that goal - but - the K-12 system can only take the blame for a portion of that. I would suspect that most people leave college for financial reasons and never get back - even if they mean to. I think that is especially true not of the lowest quintile, but the kids from the middle class, but their parents don't/can't/won't help them.

I will contribute by going out of district instead of demanding improvements at our high school.
It is nice to want to change the world, but I'm not sure I am ready to sacrifice my kids to do so.
