Saw a difference on the scale today! 215.6, yay! I think it's from being back home and giving up gluten more consistently again. 10 pounds from pre-B weight...want to get to 205 by Christmas!

Sorry I've been MIA! to catch up... @pinkcshmere- that is SO horrible about your biking trail! UGH! people are disgusting and it is such a shame that it is preventing you from doing something you love so much! sam and bobosensei I am with you on the sugar. it does horrible awful things to you. CRAVINGS being #1. but it changes your taste buds so much. SO many things I used to eat, I can't anymore. Oddly, starburst isn't one. I had a piece for the first time is probably 8 months and oh my god it was delicious. My mouth is watering right now thinking about it LOL but ditching sugar has made a big impact in how things taste and what I crave. missk82 - congrats on the progress!!!! it is amazing the impact that flour/gluten has on so many of us. I have been having bread several times a week. stress eating! and i have found that my weight loss has stalled. amazing how huge the effect is! work has been CRAZY busy and I haven't even been getting my 10k steps in. SO annoyed because I was on FIRE for a while. I've been crazy PMSing too this week and eating like a total A$$HOLE. of course i feel it... and the scale is up quite a bit. I am going to use the rest of the week/weekend to refocus and get meals planned out and really focus on taking care of me and hubs. Speaking of which... he put on a shirt this morning and got so excited because it used to be so snug and now it is a bit roomy! He's down probably about 10 pounds. I think it is great motivation for both of us!

@pinkcshmere check this out Go Guard self defense FIL just sent me information on this. He's a cop and says the biggest thing to remember is it is a weapon so you need to check the laws where you are to make sure you are okay to carry it. Then he recommends trying it out. By that he means punch something that has a bit of give to see how it feels in your hand. Does it scrape, hurt etc? Are you going to feel comfortable using it? He also says you need to know it can be turned against you, so a self defense class would help ensure you can handle yourself. I have been planning to get some mace when we get back to the states. I've seen them where they come attached to a handcuff so no digging around in a pocket if you need it. I think it would be easier to use the mace than a weapon that draws blood, but then you have the risk of macing yourself.

I feel like going for a run today. This always happens with the fall weather. Last year I had new shoes that were hurting my knees and I blamed myself for being so heavy so I just didn't run, but a few months ago I got a new pair that I think will work better.
I'm going to start with 2 miles since it's been more than a year since I last ran, and I know I might have to take some walk breaks.

Missed step goal again this week. About a 1000 less than previous week. Still over 70000. There was one day where I did not hit 10000.
This weeks goal is still 75000.
Have a great week everyone. Keep up the good work.

I decided last week that I was going to get back into strength training. I'd let that part slip a little over the summer, so I did core circuits on Saturday and weight circuits on Sunday. And, now I'm feeling it a little. I knew I'd gotten a little out of shape, but man, I didn't think I'd lost that much! Just goes to show how quickly a person can lose their level of fitness.
Keep up the good work, ladies. I hope everyone has a good week!

I'm back and fatter than ever! No, just kidding. I haven't been watching my eating at all and have put on about 5 pounds of the 25 I lost, but considering how much I've been snacking it's not a surprise. Really need to get that under control. I've been walking...a lot. My cousin keeps doing these damn Fitbit challenges and I'm super competitive. However, he does them on the weekends he's running half marathons, so I have to work really hard to beat him. This past weekend I had 77K steps. I beat him, but my Mom kicked my ass with 108K (yes, she is insane). I also dug out the old Bowflex and got it put back together last week. I think all the nuts and bolts are in and it's safe. Time will tell. I would like to start doing 20 minutes of strength training 3X a week. Too bad the weather is turning because it's in the garage. I might lose my motivation to do that once it's consistently below freezing out there.

Hi ladies (and gents?). I'ts kind of late in 2015, but hopefully better late than never. A lot of friends are saying they are cutting back or cutting out sugar and chocolate in 2016. And I know this is something I need to do too. So I'm thinking start now and then when 2016 arrives I should be past a lot of the craving. So that's my goal to cut out added sugar and chocolate. I'd appreciate your suggestions for dealing with cravings.

The cravings pass after a 10-14 days for me. But not if you keep fake sugar in your diet or are heavy in dairy- lots of lactose (sugar) in milk. Keep fruit, dried fruit and nuts near by. Keep protein and fat in your meals to help keep you full and fight the cravings. Ditching sugar alone isn't as hard as Ditching both sugar and flour... that is a double whammy! Good luck! A page or two ago.we had this discussion, I believe. I don't think Sam eats fruit anymore because of the sweetness. I will say... ditching sugar and flour did get rid of that 3pm crash I'd get every day. I feel very different now. Note... I now have sugar or flour in one or two meals a week. I previously went several months cold turkey. Sent from my SM-G920T using proboards

Still did not hit the step goal. A better total than last week.
Going to keep the goal at 75000.
Need to focus on the drinking more water and better food chances.
Have a great week everyone.

forwardwego I encourage you to really, really think about what your end goals are, then take an honest look at where you are now and make a plan to get there. Cutting sugar and chocolate could be good for you, might be exactly what you need, but if you are just doing it because others are it will be harder to succeed. I do agree that the way we consume sugar has gotten so out of control. I've had 4 teaspoons already because I drank two cups of coffee this morning. So now I need to be careful what I eat the rest of the day, and there is so much hidden sugar in things. Even things that we don't think are sweet can have sugar added to them. So anything with a label needs to be read! Like sarcasticgirl said when I started watching my sugar and flour intake my energy level increased dramatically. I'd gotten into the habit of just taking a nap in the afternoons since I'm not working, but I knew that wasn't the way I wanted to live my life because eventually I'll be working full time again and unable to just sleep when I feel like it. Plus a nap cuts into your day so much. I wanted a fuller life than that. I haven't had a nap in months, and I don't feel that sluggish feeling in the afternoon either. I haven't cut the flour and sugar completely, though I did for a few weeks and I really restricted it a while after that. My focus is really more on eating as many veggies as I can. So instead of reaching for pasta I think about how to get more veggies and beans. Instead of having bread at breakfast I do a green smoothie. And I'm still susceptible to sugar candy binges. I fuss at DH all the time for bringing candy home. Most of the time I don't want it, but if it is in the house and I start in on it it sure is hard to stop. It's just easier for me to not have it around.

I'm feeling good today. I woke up super early, but thought I might when I went to bed at 9. I woke up at 4:45am, which is just in time for me to do the 5am yoga that comes on TV so I went ahead and got up and did it. I felt great afterwards. It has been so long since I got up early enough to do this class. And even though I am trying to do a daily yoga practice on my own or via youtube classes, I find that doing a higher level class really pushes me and I need it. Otherwise I'll stick with my favorite and comfortable poses and I am not growing as much.
I am scheduled to do weights today, but I couldn't fit them in yet. Right now I am waiting on a dryer repair person because our dryer door is broken. So I went ahead and showered, and I'll figure out how to work the weights in later today. Worst case scenario I do them tomorrow and shift Friday's weights to Saturday. But I would like to do them today, just to help me feel like I can stick with it when my schedule changes. I've found in the past one thing derails you, then you start putting things off, then realize a month later that you got too far off track.

bobosensei Thank you for that insight. I do need to do more self-evaluation to help me stay the course. A friend posted that she planned to cut out sugar and chocolate in January. My feeling was "if only I could". For a long time, maybe 2-3 years I've known I'm eating too much of these. I tried to quit chocolate, thinking I could do it for a month, would feel better (though I don't feel "bad" per se), and then bring it back in a moderate amount. But I never lasted more than a very few days. I have a very physical job which kind of buys me a ticket to do the careless eating. In those 2-3 years my weight is up 8 pounds, not enough to jolt me to reality or action. So when stress kicked in, and it typically does, I'd give up. Well, gotta cut this short & head to work. Thank you for your posts. I am so grateful for a support system. ETA: this is day 3.

Back from work....I don't feel "bad" i.e. sick, but I'm pretty sure I don't feel nearly as good as I could. And to lose a few of the 8 extra pounds would be nice, I'm hoping that will happen as a side benefit of improved eating. In my earlier failed efforts, I didn't have a plan of what to do. My mental dialogue was simply "don't eat chocolate". So now I'm planning to think more about "what to do", rather than what I can't do. My job is between 8-10 hours a day and involves 7-10 miles of walking per day, so you can see how that bought me a little forgiveness on the junky eating. I've had this job 28.5 years and can retire in 1.5 more years, and then this type of eating would probably earn me a whole lot of extra weight and physical ailments. (I also was spurred to action this time by an article I read with studies of the effects of sugar.) These 3 days have been ok. The first day was a little euphoric, so pleased to be starting what I know is good for me. The second day, yuck. Had a hard time settling in for the night without ice cream, finally had a few crackers w/ cheese. Again, thanks for support and suggestion!

Hi @patstab I'm new here, good for you getting your back right! The last 6 words of your post are a very good start Day 5 for me, which could be a "no chocolate" record.

That's a very nice family picture @patstab
Well that's one week of no chocolate and very minimal refined sugar. Sometimes it felt like no problem. Right now I'm very stressed and it is a problem.

Hit my weekly step goal this past week.
This week's step goal is going to be 76000.
Weight 11-16 172. Weight 11-23 170.
Now to make it thru this week without letting this creep back up.
Still need to work on increasing water consumption.
Have a great week everyone.

I lifted weights today. Also had a green smoothie for breakfast. I used fresh collards instead of spinach or kale and found I like it as much as spinach and way better than kale. I had two bowls of lentil and sweet potato stew for lunch. Probably shouldn't have had that much.
Feeling a little restless. Waiting to hear the admission decision for grad school, waiting for DH's leave to be approved to see if we can spend a week in Iceland with my sister over Christmas, and planning our move back to the states. Oh, and thanksgiving which might just be me and DH. I don't mind, but he likes big gatherings. All of our friends moved over the summer, and most everyone else we know is travelling.
Oh, and we got snow the last two days in a row. It isn't sticking, but it is pretty while it lasts.

bobosensei Wow, that sounds very healthy. It sounds like you have an established program of diet and exercise for yourself. I'm curious what your goals were/are? Yippee, day 8 & 9 accomplished. I can't say that I'm feeling more energetic, but I am less whooped at the end of the work day. And apples and bananas taste better I'm thinking that overloading on the sugar had kind of "flattened" my taste buds. I've rediscovered Triscuits: wheat, salt, and oil. Can't be too bad, or is there something I'm overlookins?

And apples and bananas taste better I'm thinking that overloading on the sugar had kind of "flattened" my taste buds. I've rediscovered Triscuits: wheat, salt, and oil. Can't be too bad, or is there something I'm overlookins? Oh I struggle with consistency. My main exercise is yoga and walking the dogs. In the spring and summer I like to ride my bike, and in the fall and winter I like to run outside. My weight lifting is least consistent. I think because it usually makes my weight go up a bit, and when I stop losing or start gaining I sometimes get discouraged and stop. My goal is to get healthier for a future pregnancy. Right now my blood pressure is borderline, and while I am not that overweight (5'8 and about 177 pounds/size 10-12) I know that getting pregnant would push me over 200 pounds and I don't want that. My diet is much better than it used to be. I eat a lot less cheese and sugar, and I've really focused on getting more vegetables, fruits, and beans. I also don't reach for pasta as much as I used to, and when I do I never cook a whole box anymore. I make 1/4 or 1/2 and always mix in vegetables now, even just fresh spinach. I limit processed grains and try to use starchy vegetables or brown rice when I must, but I always have multiple vegetables for dinner. A new favorite is brussels sprouts. And I am not grazing all day and night like I used to. I've been doing green smoothies for a few years now, and it is a wonderful way to get in extra green veggies and to get berries when they are not in season in the form of frozen. Next year I am going to focus on getting movement every single day, and drinking less alcohol. Since I will be leaving Germany to go back to the states I know I will automatically drink less. Beer and wine are so much cheaper and so much more available over here, and there is not stigma at all. You see people drinking before noon and the glasses are huge. And since I am not working it is easy for me to feel like I am on vacation and should have a glass of wine with lunch. But ultimately I am too cheap to do that when I am paying US prices for the stuff I like. So leaving germany is going to be good for my health too

bobosensei getting prepared for a future pregnancy is a very exciting goal. @patstab win/win on the walking with MIL. How can this be? There is a Cracker Barrel made from scratch chocolate chip pecan pie in the fridge. I asked DH about it. Some friends of ours brought it as a gift. It's only made seasonally and they love it, and thought we would too. Well heck yeah. Who wouldn't? Doggone it anyway.

forwardwego: It's Thanksgiving/the holidays. Have one small piece a day till it's gone and you'll be ok. Moderation is the way to go! Or, if it's really your downfall, then give your DH HUGE pieces till it's gone I've done pretty good this holiday weekend. My DH and I have eaten a whole pumpkin pie this week, but that was over 4 days, so I think it's ok. We ran a turkey trot today and FROZE. Who thought running in the gray cloudy coldness was a good idea?! But, it makes me feel better that I got a 5k in, plus the walking to and from the start/finish. We are having a birthday party Wednesday night for a friend. Let's hope I don't eat too much birthday cake on Wednesday! Birthday cake is my downfall-I could live on birthday cake.

flamingo I had a small piece of the pie. It was amazing, and happily that is all I want of it. Moderation is good. Thanks for your perspective on that. ETA: It is a lesson for me to eat healthier on a regular basis so that the occasional gifted pie can be enjoyed.

Hope that everyone enjoyed the holiday! Lucky ( ) for me we have thanksgiving with my DH's family... and well they do not cook well. Lots of stuff is just store bought from the pkg. So I had turkey, mashed potatoes (that I made and brought... no added milk) gravy and green beans. And two rolls I splurged on the rolls and boy were they great. I had a couple of my own homemade cookies... and no pie or anything because none of the options were appealing. That served as lunch AND dinner... so it evened out. I have lost about 30 pounds since I saw everyone last. Everyone was complimentary and it was nice to hear. I took a photo with DH (full body shot) in front of a very festively decorated fireplace and posted on Facebook. It was nice to hear the compliments and to see a person I recognize from so many years ago. It has actually given me motivation to keep going forward and make more progress. I really need to focus on yoga. Which I have said about a million times. But my muscles hurt and I NEED it. Not to mention the whole lengthening and toning and strengthening or the core. I need that! Tomorrow!!!!!! I am going to start the 30 days of yoga. For real!!!!!! ETA: I agree with a bit of dessert in moderation. It can be very difficult but moderation is something we must all learn if we plan to be successful long term! Sent from my SM-G920T using proboards

congratulations sarcasticgirl, on your 30 pound weight loss. And on liking that person you see in the picture!! So funny about the not-so-good cooks. I kid that my DH cooks in self defense. Apparently pecan pie freezes well, so I'm going to cut the rest of the pie into slices, seal them, and freeze to be taken out and enjoyed occasionally .
