sarcasticgirl - that is true. I know when I go for a long, strenuous hike I eat like a wild woman that was rescued after days with no food.

Got my flu shot yesterday. The army does these big clinics where they take the staff and equipment out to high traffic areas. You have to be weighed. I step up and they ask how much do you usually weigh. I tell them 180 since I am fully clothed wearing boots and had just eaten lunch and it was the afternoon. The scale weighed me at 167. At least 13 pounds less than I should have weighed. I know each scale will be a little different, but that should be more in the order of 1-3 pounds. Now last year I remember thinking I weighed about 5 pounds less than normal. Because I asked the guy doing it if they intentionally set it lower so they don't have a bunch of women fussing that the scale is wrong. So now I am wondering if my scale could be so off. I have had it for a while. Maybe 9 years now. I can't remember when I bought it, but I know I got it after I moved out on my own but there is a chance it is just 6-7 years old. It's digital so I don't have a way to adjust it.
The only thing I can think to do is weigh myself at home and then go directly to the gym and use the scale there to see if a different scale gives me such a huge difference in reading.
Does anyone have a good scale recommendation. Something I can get on amazon? And if I should stay away from digital scales I am willing to.

bobosensei very strange! I can't even remember where i bought my scale. it is just a plain digital scale. I think it might calculate body fat or something? I can't remember. But it is generally pretty close to the scale at the doctor so I never really worry about it. Maybe a new scale is in order... or weigh at the gym and see. more than a 5 pound difference would be really strange.

I tried testing it today by weighing some of our dumbbells. The test was to weigh several on their own then together in different combinations to see if they add up. They did with a half pound. I also drug the scale around to a bunch of different places on the floor and got the same weight +/- .2 pounds. So I'm not sure. I can remember when I was in the 160s and I feel like I was smaller than I am now. It might be a couple of days before I can get to the gym, but I am going to do that first before buying another scale.
In the grand scheme I guess this isn't a big deal. I mean I am as big as I am and whether a scale says I am 500 or 50 it doesn't change my size (and the fact that I want to be smaller).

PS something I learned about scales while looking up how to test mine is that some digital scales are built to give falsely precise readings. For example- if you weigh yourself every day the scale is built so that small changes don't show up. Like if one day I am 150 pounds, then next 149.8 the scale will show me as still being at 150. It does this to prevent people from weighing 10 times in a row and seeing any variance in the weight- and then b!tching that the scale is messed up.
And for me it also explains why I always seem to lose at least .6 pounds at a time. It isn't the way my body works it is the way the scale works.

I'm finally starting to feel better. And the weather this weekend has been fantastic, so I'm getting lots of exercise in between yesterday and today.
Food wise, I'm doing ok. I'm still trying to make it a point to get 5 servings of veggies a day, and most days I'm hitting that. It's a little harder now that my DH is home full time-he isn't a big fan of eating so many veggies. However, we went shopping last night and he fit into a size smaller than he'd been in, so I'm hoping that will give him motivation to keep eating veggies with me!!
Scales: My scale at home, the scale at the gym, and the doctor's scale are all within 3 pounds of each other. I've always thought if they are within 5 pounds of each other, they are probably close to accurate. Since I always weigh, at home, first thing in the morning, as I'm about to get in the shower, I figure the others will always be up a little since it's later in the day and I'm fully dressed.

@patstab don't even think about your weight until after you get back from your trip. You'll want to have the full experience in Korea. Enjoy your family, and enjoy being in a different culture. Give yourself a break for now. You can get back to it once you get home and have readjusted to the time zone.

Ugh- DH and I are both sick. He thinks it is from the flu mist we had last week. For the past two days I've felt awful. Muscle aches, fever (by touch- I don't actually have a thermometer), horribly sore throat, and a bit of congestion. I'm feeling better today from taking a decongestant all yesterday and laying in bed. My body isn't aching like it was.
I skipped yesterday's workout. I hoped to just shift it to today, but I am going to wait until later to make sure I really am feeling better.

Yeah, I'm still feeling it. I keep thinking I'm getting better only to have the symptoms shift. First it was a sore throat, then congestion and body aches, and now a constant cough and what seems to be a headache or the return of a fever. Last night DH woke me up multiple times from his hacking fits and then I would start hacking. The dogs were mad at us...

Hit my step goal this week.
Walked in a 5k on Sunday. I finished. I was not last but I think I was at least 5 minutes if not more slower than last year.
Eating was good until the weekend.
I am going to keep my step goal for this week at 75,000. This is my stress week at work.
bobosensei- feel better
Have a great week everyone.

Hope everyone is finally feeling better!
It looks like I have hit a plateau and I likely won't lose anything until I mix it up. I wish I could pick where I lose... Don't we all. I am firmly in a size 12... And I am fine with that, I need to lose some from the top without dropping another pants size any time soon. Dropping a size on the top would be ideal.
I need to pick up weights and core workout again... And yoga. I keep starting and then stopping. Argh!
Oh... And DH has lost 8 pounds! He has been doing really well, we've only hit a bump or two with his healthy eating but overall it is going well and I am very proud of him. Now *I* need to start doing better!

I've been missing for awhile - also due to illness! My son has been sick twice, I've been sick once, I took a business trip to Omaha, took a vacation with the family to Houston, and now I'm back home but my DH traveled to Mexico last week and is in Omaha this week. So, chaos! All of the traveling did throw things off a bit, and I gained back a couple of pounds. When traveling I ate some gluten and dairy, and if I had to guess, I think gluten is my main eczema trigger and what keeps my weight on. Now that I'm back home I've prepped some meals and I can be more vigilant about what I eat.
With all of the traveling I haven't been able to work out. I'm going in to work late this Wed, so I think I'll stop by the gym then, and next weekend. So I got back to 220 after vacations, but after a couple days of eating better, I'm down to 218. I REALLY want to be at 205 by Christmas, so I need to focus.
But - we all need to remember that the scale doesn't tell the whole story! I can now button a pair of pants that I haven't worn for a year. No, they aren't comfy, but a few months ago I couldn't get them to close AT ALL. My husband has told me I look thinner. I saw my sisters last week and they said they could tell a difference. My kids' babysitter said my thighs and legs looked slimmer. And best of all - a very nice co-worker said she could totally tell that I've lost weight. The funny thing is, I've only lost maybe 5 pounds. But the inches are coming off. For now, I'll take it!
Keep up the good work everyone! I'll try to check in more often now that life has settled down a little!

Aww, thanks for tagging me back here, Ombud!! I've not been in this thread for awhile. I was doing really well sticking with the THM diet and hit my goal. So far I've maintained for the past several months, so that's good! Exercise still isn't happening as often as it should but oh well.
Sugar still is one thing that can make me feel terrible. I am glad that Pepsi has stopped using aspartame and now uses sucralose (Splenda). I tolerate that one well so now I can have the occasional soda again without feeling sick I am a bit concerned, though. DD is picking up on the things I order when we go out to eat. She made a comment to the babysitter that "Mommies have to drink Diet". It really bugs me, maybe because of the issues I saw my mom struggle with as we were growing up. I don't want to pass that along to her at all. I told her it's just a different flavor of soda that mommy likes, but mommies don't have to drink "diet".

That's a message we'd rather kids not get. Your answer is perfect: it's a flavor choice. I was raised thinking diet drinks were the answer. Now I don't drink soda & I'm convinced that (for me) drinking calories makes me hungry (soda, juices VS whole fruit / veggies)

There's too much sugar in fruit for me now. I can't even eat a banana or an apple without feeling sick. If I do have fruit I have to pair it with some lean protein (yogurt usually). But the longer I go without sugar the more I just don't want it.
Funny thing, I also don't like a lot of the alcoholic drinks I had before. Margaritas are WAY too sweet now. I would rather have a vodka tonic with a slice of lime instead. DH and I are about to go to Mexico for our "honeymoon" and I had been looking forward to all of the fun drinks. Now I will have to get creative about what I order

Maybe that's why I prefer veggies to fruit? Less sugar?

I have a huge emotional eating problem. I'm reading this book: www.beckdietsolution.com/And it has been very helpful so far. I really need to get this under control, and I'm about a week in and seeing good results. Now just need to keep it up for the rest of my life! That's not overwhelming at all.

That's a message we'd rather kids not get. Your answer is perfect: it's a flavor choice. I was raised thinking diet drinks were the answer. Now I don't drink soda & I'm convinced that (for me) drinking calories makes me hungry (soda, juices VS whole fruit / veggies) I know for a fact that fake sugar makes me hungry. I discovered it in college when I did the atkins diet. I noticed any time I drank a diet soda I binged or really, really wanted to binge. Then I noticed the same thing happens if I chew sugarless gum. I know a lot of people swear by chewing gum, but for me it just makes me hungrier. I end up swallowing the gum after the flavor is lost then I want food. I haven't bought gum in over 10 years. If DH has some I will sometimes chew one piece, but that is only a few times a year that I do that. I had a huge diet coke addiction in college. I didn't drink coffee, but I must have gotten to the point that I had 6 or more diet cokes in a day. I finally broke the addiction after college. I think in part because I started drinking coffee when I started working full time. I would drink coffee nearly all day at work, but in the last 4-5 years I have limited myself. First I would just drink it in the mornings, but now I am down to nearly always stopping at one cup. Sometimes I will have 2, but that's rare and usually just an odd weekend morning if I get up early and make a huge breakfast for DH. I'll have a second cup while eating unless I have OJ and champagne cause then I'll have a mimosa

Hello all! I've been mia...... it looks like I'm going to have to figure out an alternative to my bike riding. I don't really have anywhere reasonable to ride regularly anymore. My 2 favorite places have been ruined for me. They're in the same area and in the past few months, there's been a murder in the area and a lot of reported aggravated and simple assaults and thefts in the park. I've been nervous about it since the murder (which was a robbery and they killed her). then all the other stuff started happening too. It's one of the nicer parts of town and borders a fairly wealthy suburb but I guess the people the park and trails attract are easy prey for criminals so they decided to join us. It's a real shame because a lot of private and public money has been spent on the parks and trails and they really are nice but I guess it got too popular and now I'm sure I'm not the only person hesitant to go there. It took a minute for me to get comfortable going on the "creepy" trail by myself, but it was more my imagination running wild than concern about someone doing something to me. Now I have genuine concerns about my safety. I dnot want to give up riding my bike, but I don't know what to do. The park was on the news again today, police everywhere and a helicopter out, searching the woods for a man with a gun that had run from a deputy. I'm pissed that people are so terrible and I'm sad that you can't even enjoy simple things like a park where I live. Apologies for being a downer. I've just gotten really disgusted.

Sorry your enjoyment has been ruined. There hasn't been any really violent attacks here, but there was enough jerks on ATVs on the bike paths trying to run people over at a high rate of speed and random panhandlers that it was no longer enjoyable to go running on the bike paths. I've dug out my stationary bike at home, and have been doing that and yoga in the house.

@pink Cashmere that is terrible! I have no advice because I can't imagine what I would do in that situation. I get creeped out on the trails I ride sometimes and nothing has ever happened there that I am aware of.
I've been thinking about safety and what I'll do when I return to the US. I know having my big dog makes me feel safer out on walks, but a dog can't stop a gun.
