I understand what everyone is saying about not easily transmittable. Please understand it only takes one idiot to do it. One uninformed person, who does not understand the process. Or....one unbalanced person with an agenda. No, it really doesn't. "Not easily transmittable" means that even a person with an 'agenda' or someone who doesn't know they have the disease would be able to infect hardly anyone else before the disease's progress renders them a moot vector. When they're in early stages and walking around (like Mr. Duncan), they aren't very contagious. When they are highly contagious, they aren't up walking around. They're very ill and contained. And the virus doesn't live long outside the body. Ebola, on average, is transmitted to less than 2 people per case. With proper medical access and good tracking systems, in the US it isn't even hitting the average. One contagious person in a crowd spitting in people's faces ('cuz that's what it would take) might be able to reach a couple of other people with his virus, but he/she would not be able to 'spread it around the country', despite what some people would like to think.

I do not see this as a bad thing (if anyone thinks it is) bringing this doctor to the Nebraska Medical Center which has the best facilties to treat Ebola
![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/yeahthat.gif)
People are horrified when they find out I work for UNMC. DH had a co-worker tell him he should demand I quit my job.
The biohazard unit is a locked door floor in the hospital. Not entirely sure how I am going to contract Ebola while sitting in the College of Pharmacy. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/crazy.gif)
thru interoffice mail?

thru interoffice mail? Great, now we're gonna have to start quarantining postal workers and mail clerks on paid administrative leave. See what you started?

Please understand it only takes one idiot to do it.
I understand how things work just fine. I have a background in microbiology and also understand epidemiology.
By the time said idiot is contagious enough to create a pandemic they aren't going to be going anywhere.
You can't transmit ebola thru sneezing, coughing or anything that you can be up and mobile with. It's spread directly thru bodily fluids such as feces, blood and vomit.
Ebola also kills its' victims extremely quickly, too quickly for it to spread because of "one idiot". That's why it hasn't managed to spread all over the world like other diseases have.
Ebola is a problem in Africa in large part due to the fact they don't have resources like they do here at NMC. Have you seen the pictures of people in Africa sitting outside together waiting for treatment? that's a great way to spread disease. There are no individual containment units like there are here.
Funeral practices often involve marching the body thru town with EVERYONE touching it mere minutes after the person dies.
Here if you die from Ebola you're body is wrapped up, put in a bag and immediately incenerated. The people handling the body wear disposable PPE and disposal is done in a completely separate location from all other waste disposal. There is no chance for an "idiot" to come in contact with the body.
There is also a real fear/mistrust of doctors and authority in Africa for good reason. So people often won't take their sick loved ones to the hospital until the person is in the end stages and that's when ebola is the most transmittable. There have also been accounts of people sneaking their relatives out of the hospitals in the middle of the night before they can be fully treated.
Here people are cooperating and following CDC guidelines. I don't see an epidemic going on here do you? More people get sick and die from the flu in this country than we've had ebola cases/deaths.
If you are worried about an "idiot" creating a pandemic you should be far more worried about things like the swine flu and SARS where you are able to be up and walking while highly contagious

Go ask Mr. Duncan's fiance/caregiver how easy it is to transmit this disease even when a person is, in fact, puking, bleeding or has diarrhea in a cramped environment and dies days later.

I think a lot of people get hung up on Ebola kills you.
Which is scary, but they aren't thinking about it from a contagion standpoint. The whole goal of a virus is to infect as many people as possible. Ebola right now kills people way too quickly for it to get to more than the people directly surrounding the infected.
The flu on the other hand doesn't kill people that rapidly, so it has A LOT of time to move around and infect as many hosts as it possibly can.
The flu is also airbone, so if somebody doesn't cover their mouth when they sneeze/cough you can get it.
For Ebola you'd need to be rolling around in their waste/blood to get it. It's actually a pretty poor means of infection for a virus if the host lives in a country that has proper resources and sanitation.
If Ebola ever mutates and becomes airborne THEN you can start freaking. If Ebola ever mutates to where people can live weeks while contagious THEN it's time to freak out.
As of right now while it is concerning it certainly doesn't warrant the mass hysteria that has been going on.

You know how they handle waste from ebola patients in some areas of Africa? They lie on a cot with a hole poked in it and a bucket is put underneath. The bucket's contents are then emptied into the streets where people walk.
The cot is also rarely sanitized because they don't have the means to do so. When one person dies they're carted off and the next person is put on the dirty cot.
That's an awesome way to spread disease. Think of the plague and typhoid.
Can you see that happening here in America? There has been absolutely no lay person that has become sick after coming in contact with the Ebola patients treated here. It's all been medical professionals who are heavily at risk of direct contact with the waste products of sick individuals.

Now that the president has sent teams in there to help, I'm hoping to see great improvement in the treatment of this disease in the stricken nations. Through education, added equipment, and demonstrations of protocols and techniques, a lot can be done to aid the people.

We have teams there, dj. I'd like to see more sent in, but we have teams there. Military personnel trained in this sort of thing. Of course, there are also the charitable organizations, but they don't always have the know-how and equipment. The military does. I was very glad to see our troops sent in to help with something instead of kill people.

You too can own an Ebola-free nurse action figure doll named Case-E, which looks very much like Ebola nurse, Kaci Hickox. Here’s the Ebola-Free Nurse Doll You Never Knew You WantedThe toy producer says that any resemblance to Kaci Hickox is purely coincidental With the holidays right around the corner, parents can now buy their children an untraditional yet socially relevant gift: The “Case-E Ebola Nurse Action Figure.” Herobuilders.com made the toy of an Ebola-free nurse with curly hair and a red “x” sewed over her eye, who bears a strong resemblance to Kaci Hickox, the nurse who made headlines for fighting New Jersey and Maine over their controversial quarantine policy for those returning from Ebola affected countries. "I don’t know who you’re talking about, I don’t know who Kaci Hickox is,” Hero Builders president Emil Vicale tells TIME, laughing. “This nurse’s name is Case-E. She bears no resemblance.” Rest of article below: Here’s the Ebola-Free Nurse Doll You Never Knew You Wanted I think it's time to take another look at forced sterilization.

Yesterday, I had Ebola-free turkey for dinner. Did the FDA sign off on it? Let's wait for the twenty some day waiting period before making such a statement.

Evidently this thread deserved to be bumped based on it's discussion of it on another thread
Shall we change the discussion to:
ZIKA!
The government says we have nothing to worry about. Move along.

inconclusive tests are just that. this quote stood out for me: "It may just be an extraordinary circumstance that's not really generalizable," he said. ZIKA actually seems quite similar to Ebola, in terms of transmission, based on that article. similar protocols should stop it's spread.
