Then it is transmitted through body fluids. How many people do you exchange fluids with in a typical day? There is a reason it is primarily family and healthcare workers catching this, not passengers on a plane.
Walking through an area where someone has sneezed is exchanging body fluids. Anywhere from airports to groceries. Agreed, and do not forget, the germ actually lives on the solid surface for hours afterwards. As the Asian worker on your cruise ship takes his card and slides it through the id verifier on the gangplank as he re-enters the ship (with the person showing signs unrecognized by a guy making $4 an hour) the worker now takes your id infects it with the ebola germ on his gloves and gives it back to you.
As the suicide "bomber" walks through the airport contaminating seats and tables in restaurants with Ebola germs, and travelers going to the far reaches of the continents.
"The Walking Dead" series is potentially becoming a reality television show Maybe you should try harder to keep your fingers out of your mouth, stop picking your nose and stop rubbing your eyes all the time ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/huh.gif) Oh, and wash your hands more often during the day ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/huh.gif) ? <--- sarcasm there, just in case there was any doubt. Just getting the ebola virus on your hands or clothes doesn't automatically mean you are infected (I know that kinda thing is used to Dramatic Effect on TV shows.) The virus needs an entry way - mouth, nose, eyes or a cut or sore on your body. As for the Dallas situation (and other hospitals where they've treated ebola patients) I bet there were a few other people (from the dozens and dozens of people involved over the course of weeks they were dealing with patients) who messed up the safety 'protocols' - they just didn't happen to have any of the virus 'on' them OR they did but it didn't get a chance to infect them when they 'slipped up'. I suspect this also happens in Africa with family members (who don't contract the virus), doctors/nurses/others. I suspect that in Africa when the health care workers are sorely pressed (working lots of shifts/not getting enough sleep/dealing with patients non stop - that there's more of an opportunity to 'slip up' the safety protocols and eventually they are infected. Have any of Duncan's family (who he was living with) come down with ebola yet? Isn't it getting close to the 21 day cut off?

Swine flu and Ebola have different modes of transmission. Does it really matter when some are in ![](http://www.angryblackladychronicles.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/panic.gif) mode. Does it really matter? ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/sarcasm.png) IDK, is there some way those of us who aren't in panic mode can profit from those in panic mode. Oh, wait, that's evil. Never mind.... maybe we could just quarentine the people in Panic Mode so the rest of us can continue on with our lives? Is that evil too??

Can we define panic? I see people asking questions. Does questioning equal panic now? Panic is creating ridiculous scenarios without a hint of merit or fact.

Mr. Duncan first went to the hospital with symptoms on September 26. Using that date, October 17 would be 21 days. No reports, so far, of illness of family or his girlfriend, Tiny.

I don't know anyone who is panicking and I have people who work for me in Dallas. Glad to hear it! I think most folks will be willing and able to think things through and use their good common sense (even though I've heard it's dead). This is a terrible disease. All these hemorrhagic fevers are. We don't see a lot of it here. It's mostly in tropical climates. Rodents, mosquitoes, ticks are vectors. When it is seen here, it's usually because someone has traveled to a tropical climate (vacation, visit, whatever) and been exposed to someone who is sick and with whose body fluids the traveler came in contact. Because we are forewarned in this current situation, we're as ready as we can be. Sure, training is needed in many areas and all medical personnel should be undergoing refresher courses for isolation protocols. That, to me, is a given. Still, we can handle this and people who are stricken here can be caught and treated very expediently. That's going to result in a mortality that's drastically lower than we're seeing in West Africa - for any number of reasons with our technology and available treatments being in the forefront. So, IMO, while this is really, really horrible (as is any killer epidemic), I believe it's very important not to blow it out of proportion. The best way to treat it is to stop it. The only place it can be stopped is in West Africa. That means the global community has to get involved there and help those countries cope and back this stuff back where it came from. At least, that's my view. I only wish I could join the teams there. Getting old sucks, but it sure beats the alternative! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

this put Ebola with HepC in terms of being a public health hazard. and, indeed, HepC is one frigging nasty virus. but i don't really remember it inducing widespread panic when people started recognizing it in the 80's. moreover, this disease is ALSO quite prevalent in Central Africa- but we have not instituted travel bans to prevent it, even though 80% of those that contract the virus come down with chronic illness. however, there are more lessons that we can learn from HepC. once recognized as a threat in the West, HepC got a number of good treatments which control and contain the disease. this is one of the things that makes me hopeful with Ebola...that, and the relatively difficult communicability.

I think creating scenarios where terrorists take down this country with Ebola might be a tad panicky. To be fair, bioterrorism is a thing. And people have used other agents as weapons. Do I think there's a high probability of this happening, not so much. Bioterrorism is absolutely real. But there are dozens of more effective techniques than Ebola. It just doesn't transmit nearly as easily as other diseases and there is no effective way to spread it to a mass of people. Airborne or waterborne would be the most effective. If you take out a city's water supply and kill many in the process, how much chaos would that cause? Or figure out a way to distribute a mass amount of something airborne in a stadium. But sending a guy to lick stuff in the airport with the hopes that many touch it and touch their eyes or whatnot, meh. Too slow and ineffective.

Which is why I added all of that other stuff to my post that you chose not to quote... ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/sarcasm.png) But this would be a great example of a measured response to a measured question vs. pointing at the person yelling PANIC(ER) I cut out what I felt no need to respond to. Merely agreeing bioterrorism is real. And the phrasing 'how long until' IMO implies this is some genius idea that terrorists are going to start using. It implies an answer other than never which makes it sound panicky (IMO). If it was truly just a question, then it seems like someone would say 'do you think it is possible that'. How long until elephants break out of zoos and roam wild killing everyone in the streets? Do you think it is possible that elephants will break out of zoos and roam wild killing everyone in the streets? To me they imply different things.

... Most terror groups want notoriety. I wouldn't see this as having the same publicity as other things (bombs, beheadings, etc). ... What terror groups want is to create a feeling of terror in their target group.

So, I see I am in panic mode....... What part of the stock market had the largest gains and largest falls today? Two companies that make protective gear for medical facilities skyrocketed today, admittedly small cap stocks, but so be it. What sector had one of the largest declines? The airline industry. Delta, Southwest Airlines and a few others took 5% hits today even though they should be climbing due to falling fuel costs. Market pundits had no reason to give, other than fear of Ebola slowing airline traffic due to fear.
