Rocky, I work at a medical facility. I see people do all sorts of dumb stuff out of denial. Plus, he didn't have symptoms so he had no reason for caution. He was a regular guy with who knows what knowledge of the disease.
Do I see people who do stupid things when they know or suspect medically they shouldn't? Weekly. Sometimes daily if you have a certain patient in residence. And yes far too often it is stuff that could kill them, so I have seen examples. More than I am willing to attempt to count.

I hope so, but I wonder how close the posters on this board are to the normal split.
pretty normal, from what i can tell. about 3-4 of us are pretty in line with the CDC on this. the rest are either against us, or not talking. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) Lots of not talking or talking elsewhere. Check out Dothedd's thread for example.

This is my point, actually. You said 'he lied', and I said 'he believed that what he told people was the truth'. Lack of education, being misled, or real denial all are reason for me to say that he didn't "lie" but was telling what he thought was the truth.

A timely story URL: www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/10/29/ebola-nurse-maine/18105327/
After the uproar in New Jersey, Hickox was allowed to leave on Monday, but Christie insisted that it did not represent a change of policy.
"I didn't reverse any decision," he said Tuesday. "She hadn't had any symptoms for 24 hours. And she tested negative for Ebola. So there was no reason to keep her. The reason she was put into the hospital in the first place was because she was running a high fever and was symptomatic."
(Translation, we thought she was symptomatic, so we held her. Later when she tested negative for Ebola and probably because she got a lawyer we released her to her home state as our law was covered. )
FORT KENT, Maine. -- Gov. Paul LePage said Wednesday that Ebola nurse Kaci Hickox was "unwilling" to follow state health guidelines and that he was seeking legal authority to force her to remain quarantined at a rural home in Maine for 21 days.
Hickox, who does not have any symptoms of the deadly virus, said Wednesday that she would not abide by quarantine rules that she said were "not scientifically nor constitutionally just."
(It does appear the law was not changed to mandatory quarantine and the governor is trying to force the issue in this specific case.)
The governor's office said state police were stationed the home "for both her protection and the health of the community." (I wonder how many conservatives and Republicans are going to decry this use of government to bully a citizen. Any?)

Lack of education, being misled, or real denial all are reason for me to say that he didn't "lie" but was telling what he thought was the truth. OK, my gut says he lied and you notice I said I didn't remember events correctly so I posted a URL and parts that were pertinent.
We don't agree and maybe its because of where I work and what I experience. I spend way too much time with people who refuse to acknowledge what they have been told and cling to what they want to believe for days and weeks. He lived in the bloody epicenter of the crisis. Denial is a very strong and powerful thing.
Many people tell themselves stories they want to believe. It is possible to intellectually know something yet "believe" the opposite emotionally and go with that. In those cases, you aren't telling what you think is the truth. You are telling what you hope is the truth. Really we can't prove who is right and neither of us will change our opinion, so no reason to post anymore on this.

I would not hesitate having a sit down meal with Nurse Kaci Hickox today, tomorrow or any day within her 21-day isolation period. If she was running a fever I believe she would not hesitate to tell me before we met for our meal.

are we about to open ANOTHER dark, sad chapter in our national history? Personally, I don't think so. I think the hysteria will blow over eventually. And knowing the attention span of most news consumers, I would think sooner rather than later. A lot depends on if and when we have more cases in this country.

are we about to open ANOTHER dark, sad chapter in our national history? We already have IMO. The question is how can we close it quickly and as reasonably as possible.
I am sick of worry mongers bringing problems into existence that don't need to exist. We can beat this. We will beat this. And it would go a lot quicker if you fearful types would stop beating the drum of OMG I am going to die.
Guess what, billions of people did not die of AIDs. Billions of people will not die of Ebola.
It appears the prognosis of beating Ebola is so much brighter than what we have ever had with AIDs. We should be dancing in the damn streets with glee that we are on the path of knowing how to treat it successfully and that obviously you *can* get Ebola and be cured of it.

Any idea of a news story that would capture the imagination of people and suck them into that for awhile?
I hope we get no new cases in the near future, but if we do, all are cured.

Just did some research on AIDs, and its interesting most people have just settled down and keep on living in spite of the fact AIDs cases still happen year after year.
So for Virgil and others interested, check out some nice facts on AIDs. In spite of all the many possible ways AIDs can survive outside of the body, no pandemic materialized here. www.aidsmap.com/page/1321278/
All the crap you are theorizing about Ebola might be true of AIDs, yet check out the current death rates. Still not number one.
Crap, might have lost the link. www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hus/hus13.pdf#031
If its wrong, look for the death rate pdf. Looks like it is around number 10 for causes of death in men.

True- and even better if we stop it at the source we stop it everywhere. Amazing the amount of money and resources the world has to throw bombs and pursue conflict, when it could eradicate this in short order. Priorities.
And again Cracked chimed in- and this is disturbing as well:

I read the Cracked article, and while I agree with a lot of it, I disagree on a big point. My guess is the reason people are so scared in America, is they can't pretend like AIDs, they will know who to avoid. Doctors and nurses wear street clothes out in public. Not all people who visit Africa are black.
How will we possibly know who to avoid? I think this is why the quarantine idea is so popular.
The media is definitely fanning the stupidity flames in search of profit. That magazine cover was idiotic.

Have to admit it is pretty bad when Cracked makes sense ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png) But so much of it is true- especially about the 'bush meat'- give me a break. Bush meat- AKA meat- a freaking Bison is 'bush meat'- Palin eats 'bush meat'- and now I regret making that statement ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

It is an earlier Time magazine article interestingly that addressed one incidence of eating bush meat, bats, that did give some Africans Ebola.
However, a bat on the cover is not as scary. We avoid bats here, we don't eat them. Bison, squirrels, and pheasant don't roam Liberia, etc. Bats and monkeys aren't hunted for food here. Done. Non-issue.

My understanding was that it wasn't so much the fact that bush meat or wild game is popular in Africa, but that it's often undercooked or improperly prepared, which allows humans to get sick from what's in the meat.
In many instances, catching the diseases mentioned above often occurs due to the cutting of the meat, in which animal blood and other fluids may wind up on the people cutting it, thereby infecting them. Another way that people get infected is due to the fact that some portions of the meat may not be completely cooked. This often occurs due to the type of heating source employed: open fires over which the meat is simply hung.[19] Improper preparation of any infected animal is often fatal.[20]

Yes I realize using bush meat translates as Africa is scary to many. For me personally , the ick factor is close to reading about people eating squirrels and possums.
