Pretty damn funny my company was hit with protocols months ago from the CDC and made sure we had the ability to handle it- there are damn protocol reminders on the doors- and they are quite simple.
What fascinates me is all of the anti-healthcare reform people are now screaming for Obama to do something Sorry folks- the free market could give a shit about your Ebola or where it spreads to. Enjoy your last days

The hospitals are not prepared for Ebola. The CDC is incompetent and the director needs to be fired. Turns out the nurse called the cdc and they cleared her to fly. This is one big clusterfuck. Thank god it isn't airborne because with the shit show going on we would all be in serious trouble BULLSHIT! The CDC has issued protocols on this- it is the hospitals and other private industries that are charged with following them. If they do not- it is not on the government. Why are you yelling at me? my opening statement was that the hospitals are not prepared for this...I'm pretty sure the fuckup in Dallas proves my point. But yeah, considering the government refuses to ban anyone from the hot zones from entering our country, it IS on the government. Had he not been permitted to fly here, none of this would have happened.

Actually, what I expect him to do is protect our fucking borders. If he wasn't such an ass kisser to the world, we wouldn't be dealing with this right now.
I still have no idea what INSURANCE REFORM has to do with hospitals not being prepared to deal with Ebola...
ETA: Then your company must be one of the few that are actually ready...then again, this hospital in Dallas thought they were ready, too, and look how well THAT turned out. I have a few friends who are doctors (one does a rotation in the ER) and they all tell me that we are majorly fucked if this really spreads. Other than the few hospitals (Emory, etc) that are prepared, the rest just aren't prepared. And these are front line people who will actually be dealing with this shit if it hits their area.

Nope- our state protocols hit first- which was a copy of CDC protocols. A month ago.
We have the equipment. We were trained on this. We already had a 'scare'. They went from the airport to Vanderbilt- and if you know anything about it that is a good place to be. False alarm.
What my company does is transport patients-we have almost 300 helicopters, 8 fixed wing aircraft, hundreds of ground units and we had protocols in place months back.
We are ready. And we are already in Dallas. EMS protocols went out months ago.

right. depending on what the situation calls for. if there are fluids splashing all over the place, or you have injuries on your neck, FACE SHIELD. if not, GOGGLES. same deal in the shop. if you are working on a belt sander, your odds of getting something in the neck are nil, pretty much. goggles are the requirement, there. the CDC is not going to micromanage your hospital for you. they are not going to tell you specifically what to wear, and when to wear it. they are going to issue RECOMMENDATIONS, and defer to BEST PRACTICES. seriously, i think that we are making way too much of the CDC's roll here. if they told the hospitals to wear $1M pressure suits with hepa filntration systems and breathing systems, i am sure those would be quite safe. but i am also sure that protecting your eyes is also quite safe under normal circumstances. my point was that if you read through the CDC SUGGESTIONS, they address every single one of the objections that FOX News raised. what ever happened to personal responsibility? The hospitals are not prepared for Ebola. The CDC is incompetent and the director needs to be fired. i don't see any evidence this is true, and i am getting a little sick of people getting fired when they do nothing wrong.

that whackadoodle is up for election again this year, isn't he? Indeed he is. And with two candidates against him splitting the anti- LePage vote and his base holding strong- it may be 4 more years I'm afraid. Well, not afraid exactly, but a bit embarrassed. I hope his Communications Director at least buys him a muzzle.....
All his railings against immigrants, and he can't even speak proper English himself.
But, I don't mean to hijack the thread. From the latest in the news it seems as though the CDC and/ or other responsible groups need to coordinate efforts at this point to make sure that ALL BASIC protocol is followed at all hospitals. Not only have there been breakdowns, but many nurses nationwide report that they are not equipped, not ready, and not informed on the first line defenses here. We can't ship everyone to Emory.
agreed. but here is where i differ with some of my fellow Republicans. the CDC can say whatever the hell it wants. it can issue mandate after recommendation after advisory, and if the hospitals don't pay attention, don't take them seriously, and don't spend some money and time working on it, it won't matter. we need a national effort, and it is going to NEED to be private, because our public institutions are underfunded and under-equipped to deal with it. if we the people want to change that, we can, but for now, the solution is precisely where the GOP wants it to be. let's see how they do.

Would be glad to- and we are a private, for profit company. I guess it is like the nurses union says- some hospitals or other providers could give a shit and look at the bottom line and take the chance, then there are others that realize a lawsuit could destroy the company and spend a little profit on being competent. We are going above and beyond.
But whatever- this is where for-profit healthcare gets us. Fucking shame.

Interesting! I just got an email from my professional organization with links to several CDC websites This one is particularly interesting from my viewpoint. www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/pdf/ebola-lab-guidance.pdfSpecimen Collection, Transport, Testing, and Submission for Patients with Suspected Infection with Ebola Virus Disease

So I read this and I feel a little sick to my stomach and I can't remember the last time I have seen a thermometer in the house, maybe a couple decades, but I think I'll pick one up.
What happens to your body if you get Ebola? After anything between a couple of days and a week of misery, you will have reached the crisis point – now the symptoms will either gradually recede or you will progress to the horrors of “cytokine storm”, a convulsion of your ravaged immune system that will plunge you into the terminal phase of Ebola virus disease known as haemorrhagic fever.
Cytokine storm releases a torrent of inflammatory molecules into your circulatory system. Your own immune system, now completely out of control, attacks every organ in your body. Tiny blood vessels burst everywhere and you begin slowly to bleed to death. The whites of your eyes turn red, your vomit and diarrhoea are now charged with blood and large blood blisters develop under your skin. You are now at the peak of infectiousness as Ebola virus particles, ready to find their next victim, pour out of your body along with your blood.
Understanding why some Ebola virus patients avoid the terminal phase is an active area of research, and one possible answer is that those whose T-lymphocytes survive the initial attack of the virus possibly retain sufficiently intact immune systems. Even when you are merely in the first phase of feeling vaguely unwell, it may be possible to determine if you will live or die.

We used to have a "frequent flyer" (someone who presents to the ER with phony symptoms on a regular basis) who would have jumped on this like a chicken on a Junebug! Her 15 minutes of fame would have been right in her grasp!

I know one when I see one- because my older relatives used to call them that- maybe chickens like to eat them?
Of course I was raised with terms like chigger bites, snipe hunts, etc. Thought it was a southern thing.

My dad was an Oklahoma farm kid, so it's not just deep south. Heck, the kids went on snipe hunts in California! Of course, most of the time that involved going to the beach and catching the little fish that washed up into the sand at certain times of year. The fish were snipes.

It seems Africa has more health problems than just Ebola. ‘The towels could have AIDS’: Pat Robertson issues scientifically false Kenya warningRobertson pointed out that there was not currently an outbreak of Ebola in Kenya, but there were other problems. "You might get AIDS in Kenya, people have AIDS, you’ve got to be careful,” he explained. “I mean, the towels could have AIDS.” ‘The towels could have AIDS’: Pat Robertson issues scientifically false Kenya warning American towels are fortunately AIDS free.

Oct 23 (Reuters) - A physician with Doctors without Borders who returned from West Africa recently and developed potential symptoms was being tested for Ebola at a New York City hospital, health officials said on Thursday, setting off fresh fears about the spread of the virus.
www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/23/health-ebola-usa-idUSL2N0SI2LX20141023I really hope this guy has the stomach flu or something. I was hoping all the hysteria would die down. Test results possibly by late tonight.
