It's safer to put your child in a car seat on a plane. Although to be honest, I don't think children under the age of 3-4 belong on a plane, unless there is no other way to travel between those two points. To follow the logic presented in this thread, if you don't like babies on a plane then you should get a private jet. Or you drive. Or you wait until the child is older. There are some times when flying really is the only alternative. But, most of the time there are plenty of other alternatives.

That's what the upgraded seats with more leg room are for. They aren't business or first class they're economy rows that have more leg room and can be upgraded to. It's much easier to just kick the chair of the person in-front of me though. At least I can enjoy the fact that I'm making their life miserable. Let's face it, getting your chair bumped is WAY worse than having less leg room. Actually that probably wouldn't bother me all that much. And if it did I would complain to the flight attendent.

So, I'm wondering what people would say if Firebird had framed her statement a little differently. Would people say Firebird was at fault if the baby fell asleep on her lap while nursing or just after nursing? Or what if the baby wanted to comfort nurse? Or are nursing mothers not supposed to go on airplanes, period? What do mothers do when they are in a car for 5 hours? It is illegal to put a baby on your lap. I don't care if someone takes a baby on a plane. But don't expect everyone else to accomodate your choices

I don't think kids on a plane are the same thing. The planes actually let people have lap babies. that means by everyone on this threads logic that they have a right to be there then. I don't actually know how you guys even know Firebird didn't have a seat for the baby though. I didn't see that part written. And flying with a baby and driving with one are totally different. For one when I fly I rarely pilot the plane. The second reason is I don't drive at 30,000 feet. Driving at sea level has never bothered my kids ears and even if they do cry they can't bother anyone but me in the car. Please never let me be stuck on a plane with a person with a baby in a baby seat that won't pick them up and comfort them on a plane ride!!! That sounds like torture.

So if I'm going on a trip, I should put my baby at a statistically higher risk of being hurt or killed, why? So other passengers aren't inconvenienced? I thought the whole point of this thread is looking out for number one. And fwiw, my daughter has been on one plane ride, at eight months old, and she didn't make a peep the entire time.

What we are asking for is the space we bought when we bought the ticket. Only in this discussion can my lap possibly be considered someone else's space. I am the one who normally volunteers to move to make others comfortable on planes because I know I have much shorter legs than most people. And I have been hit in the head by the seat in front of me. I shouldn't have to upgrade to a seat that doesn't get me assualted. When I am the one complaining that the seat in front of me is so close it hits me when reclined, with legs shorter than a third grader, there is a big problem and it isn't with my expectations since I am only expecting not to be hit by the seat in front of me.

The space you bought was only meant to accommodate someone of a 'regular' size as far as the airlines are concerned. If you're a big person or you have a small person strapped to the front of you then the normally functioning reclining seat and space available likely aren't enough for you. As far as your complaint as others have said that isn't the normal situation as I'm 5'11, have flown across the country and across the world while sitting in an economy seat without the reclining seat in front of me hitting me. If that seat is hitting you and your a smaller person there's something wrong with the seat or the set up and that's not the norm.

Recline, don’t recline, hog the overhead bin, make everyone get up 4 times so you can use the restroom, spill your drink, ignore your crying infant, I don’t care. Being crammed in a small pressurized space sucks no matter how pleasant your companions so suck it up and listen to the flight attendants because getting a plane full of people rerouted to win a pissing match is beyond the pale.

I'd be so suing the two passengers who caused this shit to begin with. Diverting the plane was overkill. Get to your destination, detain the two troublemakers and decide what to do with them then. Arrest them, ban them from your airline, both or neither but inconveniencing countless others was unecessary .

I don't care how you try to spin it a baby in my lap isn't going to go farther than my knees. If my knees don't fit on the plane they need to stop selling those seats! And I hate when people pretend that if the seats are too close together it must mean the person is 500 lbs or 8 feet tall. Most of us are very reasonably sized and the seats are way too close together. And I wasn't the only person to say they have been hit on the head in this thread. Not all seats are created equal and that is for different seats on the same plane as well. So you may be on the same plane as me and yet have more legroom plus have a seat that reclines while I am in an overly upright seat that doesn't with less legroom than normal. And the last few times I flew no one told me what seat was good or bad. I was just given a seat and sent on my way. If the only way the seat in front of me can recline is to hit me it is the airlines responsibility to not let that seat recline! Putting it on me to convince the person in front of me to please not hit me and hope they are nice is just plain stupid. Again I am 5'2 and have a 23 inch inseam. When I am complaining you all should be hearing "DANGER WILL ROBINSON, DANGER!"

notmsnmoney.proboards.com/thread/24387/airline-policy-on-obesity-fairThis thread is starting to remind me of the time we discussed a similar topic... No matter which side you fall on, someone ends up getting screwed. That's why I agree that the airline is at fault for the situation in the first place (but then so are we because as someone else said they are simply supplying what we demanded - cheap seats no matter what).

I would just say that it was normal shifting in my seat and then start doing it again when she left Eh, you'll get tired after a few hours. I doubt you will spend 12 hrs kicking the seat. Like I said before, if it is a short flight and you are behind me then I won't recline but if you expect me to sit straight up for several hours then it is apparent that you believe YOUR comfort trumps that of everyone else. Sorry it doesn't.

Personally I'd take someone reclining into my lap over the girl who had a cat two rows in front of me on a west to east coast flight. I was sicker than I'd ever been in my life by the time I landed at BWI. I panicked on Monday when someone got on the plane with a pet carrier until I saw it was a dog.
I flew over the holiday weekend and both times my group was upgraded to business class. It was nice!

I don't know why you are quoting me. I never said anyone shouldn't take their baby in a plane. You aren't inconveniencing me by taking the baby. Telling me I can't recline because you chose to keep your baby in your lap isn't ok, though.

Believe me, a private jet was not out of the question. But in the end I decided it would be so much nicer to fly coach and annoy the living shit out of the other passengers with my newborn so that's what we did instead

No, I want people to at least act reasonably polite when I'm making a reasonable and polite request of them.
I've said multiple times that I didn't have a problem with him reclining per se, but with the way he went about it. And for saying "NO!" rudely when I asked him politely to bring his seat back up. I didn't mean for the whole flight, I meant for two minutes while I adjusted our position and got some things out of the diaper bag which was under his seat and which I could not reach when he was in the recline position.

You are a grown man so it wouldn't be as easy as you think to kick the back of my seat for 6 hours....so I would quite enjoy knowing how much trouble you were growing through...well worth it to me :-) Eta: I meant going...not growing! I can't seem to edit on my phone

That's the real reason people fly with babies on lap. They're free.
