His kids came to see him. I hope he remembers that. We were told he won't remember icu. DH remembers me feeding him ice chips.

Oh you win. I wasn't thinking about how much she loves Florida. Hey, a spa day is a spa day. Once you're inside, getting all that pampering, it doesn't matter. BTW, I had no idea y'all had spas in Wisconsin. I thought it was all about brats, cheese and the Packers up there.

He had a better night than the night before and is cranky about food!! PT is coming at 10. It's 9:40 now. AM, sorry not clear. But his color is good, too. Not that pasty white/grey. Not a flattering shade on anyone. He'll feel a little better each day now. There will still be highs and lows, but cranky really is a good sign.

I can't believe how much better he is doing and so fast. His breathing is so much better. Of course the fact that he CAN breathe is helping. His daughter left finally but is returning next weekend. His former stepdaughter is visiting tomorrow. Hopefully new floor tomorrow and no more icu. They have different goals than he does. His is use the toilet! That's low on their list.

Freaking awesome. Most definitely . I felt the same way after I got my appendix out. One time with the bed pan and I said hell with that. Intestine? What intestine? Give me a toilet!!! (I had part of my small intestine removed at the same time so the pain and stapling area was a little larger than normal.)

It's extremely freeing on oneself when you can shit in a regular toilet. You almost feel human again.

Sending good thoughts for a speedy return to independent elimination.

I'll bet DF hasn't been so happy to go potty successfully since he was a little boy.

Well, I thought he'd get moved to 7th floor today but maybe tomorrow. No successful pottying today. Ill bet the staff will be as glad as his mom probably was when it finally happened! But his appetite is good! He asked the doctor for a frosted strawberry pop tart. They actually discussed it in the hall!! Strawberries aren't fresh. Ugh, no kidding. No fresh fruit or veggies for 6 weeks.

No fresh fruit or veggies for SIX weeks?! What is he allowed to eat? And why not fresh foods such as those? Sorry, I'm not familiar with a lot of health procedures. Either way, glad he's doing better and thank you for keeping us posted!

The fresh produce ban may be an issue with fiber - they think he'll have digestive issues with it. They may also want him to refrain from other high-fiber items for the same reason.
The other issue might be possible contamination issues from raw produce. Slightly unclean produce, which would cause most of us just mild stomach upset could be a disaster for someone who's had a transplant...their immune systems are purposely depressed, to prevent organ rejection.

My guess of no fresh fruits or veggies is that they all contain too much fiber. Fruit also contains high levels of sugar.

Fresh vegetables, especially greens like lettuce/kale/spinach can harbor Candida ablicans.
Which for a normal healthy person is probably going to be a non-issue. Our normal gut flora will cancel it out and at worst we might have to make a couple extra runs to the bathroom.
But for someone who is immune compromised and just getting out the ICU it can cause life threatening diarrhea. Zib's DF's system is going to have been wiped clean and he probably is on immune-suppressant drugs so he doesn't reject the heart.
He needs time for his body to recolonize itself with healthy bacteria and avoid potential exposure to bad bacteria as best he can.

Yes, that's it. It's only for 6 weeks. He hates veggies anyway so that's no loss to him. They don't like him much, either!! Fruit is harder, he likes fruit even though it also doesn't like him but he will comply. Especially because if he was dumb enough to cheat, he can't get anywhere on his own to buy it!!! I just wish he could get some sleep. It seems funny you can't rest in a hospital but I didn't get decent nights sleep until I got home, either.

A hospital is the absolute WORST place to get any sleep, CCCICU, CCICU, ICU or step down is even worse.

They took out some chest tubes. That was painful but its over with. I hope he can get some sleep before the NEXT interruption. I actually stood outside the door and turned away two people with paperwork that wanted to bother him. They can come back, he isn't going anywhere
