With the sad exit of four more very valuable members within the last 30-40 days, plus more I may not be thinking of at the moment, I've formulated the various reasons why I stay on:
1. Well, I like the board, members, format, and mods.
2. I have almost instant access to experienced professionals who are extremely generous about sharing their expertise and time. I've gotten advice on legal matters, accounting and taxation matters, investment matters, and being a landlord, retirement planning, estate planning, my DD's inheritance from her aunt a couple of years ago (hell on earth ), as well as weight reduction and exercise, spending habits, eating habits, how to reduce monthly costs, travel destinations, and retirement to name some very important categories in my life. I don't know many of the folks who have helped me, even by co-posting with each other on threads. They just read about my concerns, and then, " BOOM, " they've shared their insights with me. What a wonderful gift !
3. I've shared my viewpoints on being a landlord, teaching, divorce, recovering from divorce, how to save money and create a nest egg, leading a fairly frugal lifestyle, having a spouse with a bad disease, applying for social security disability, loans, financing things, and also, hopefully, added some fun to the board.
4. Although I recognize that the board can be a time-waster in some respects, it also is a central source of sometimes crucial information and opinions. There are gobs of people out there that I could hire for some purpose, but how do I even know what qualifications to look for before I hire someone ? This is where I go to get a start on my research.
5. Sometimes, friendships are formed between various members. I think it's nice that people who are alone, or have lost loved ones or good friends to death or illness, or are struggling with jobs, have a community that cares about their highs and lows. It's a tough old world out there, and sometimes, despite some gooky and awkward viewpoints and posts, there is a great deal of caring and energy put in here, which helps with the bruising difficulties that life can hand us all.

Very well put Naz.
I'd like to start a "Why I'm still Here After X years Thread" but I don't have time to manage it today.
And don't give up hope that some people will return after they cool off or whenever what is going on in their life subsides. BTDT.

I really can't think of anything that could happen that would make me delete my account. I would just back off a day or so from posting. But it is habit forming so maybe that is why some delete their accounts I also don't start threads or share much that requires replies so maybe that is the difference. The only time I came close to deleting my account was on profile settings almost hit delete instead of SAVE. Maybe they can move those buttons further away from each other for dingbats like me

Neither can I. I feel that I owe this board a debt of gratitude. I came here in 2008 (DH's first year of retirement and I was searching for more effective ways to manage our finances). I've changed the ways I do some things because of this board. I fired our financial advisor and moved the retirement accounts to Vanguard because of this board. I found YNAB thanks to this board. We are into Year 7 of retirement and our finances have never been better - thanks in large part due to this board.
People here have advised and encouraged me when my son went through a hideous divorce; and when DH was diagnosed with cancer.
Sometimes I realize I am spending too much time on the computer. It is easy enough to get up, go outside and find other things to do.

This is a great thread, Nazgul Girl. I stick around for similar reasons.
Additionally, when threads stray into social issues, I do enjoy reading points of view which are different from my own. Even if I don't agree, it expands my horizons a bit to understand why someone has arrived at their point of view. There are many people here who are capable of explaining their views thoughtfully, and that is something which can be hard to find on a message board forum.
I do miss all of the "new blood" MSN provided.

I have been around since the msn days and love coming here to talk or just be entertained. I am a SAHM and don't get out a ton so this is social interaction for me I love being able to come here and discuss a problem or just gossip about things going on in daily lives you can't talk about on fb. I wish all of our lost posters would come back (good, bad, annoying) I like them all and it keeps us diverse.

I have a large group of friends and acquaintances. If I have a disagreement with one, or a few of those friends and acquaintances, it wouldn't occur to me to stomp out on the whole group. I guess I just don't think that way. There are people here who are kind, and caring, and willing to try to be helpful to those who might need help. That, to me, is a blessing. Like Pat, I'm pretty much home-bound because of mother's care needs. This is my life-line, in many ways, and I really appreciate it. I've never expected to agree with everyone I meet, or even those I know well, all the time. That's okay with me. Disagreements can be a valuable tool.

Me? I love the give and take of ideas, whether money saving tips or someone who takes the time to post a weekly menu. Like Pat, I love that I can say things to someone I've never met knowing it won't be talked about within our little community. Friends who live in our computer are sometimes the best friends ever.
I tossed my name into the hat for a mod position only because it seemed Moon was having trouble getting enough people to volunteer. But, I have the time to do to it, and I like the opportunity to give back to a place I enjoy hanging out. It takes all of us to make this place work, and for me, I'm grateful for everyone who takes the time to share a part of their lives with us.
Just like any family, there will be squabbles, people come and go in our real lives on a regular basis, they do the same here. People leave for all sorts of reasons, and it's not our business why they chose to go. We can just wish them well and then leave the light on for them should they someday decide to return.
And above all, a huge dose of gratitude to Moonbeam for keeping this little corner of the world alive for us after MSN so rudely booted us out.

People here crack me up. Pure and simple. Plus? As the OP stated, I get great advice here through reading threads. Some days, I get fed up but it's usually because of me and my mood and not what somebody else did (even though I like to blame it on them).

I'm here for the friendships and the laughs. I'm here to let others know that someone cares for them. I'm here for the how to's & know how's.
Plus I was on a few extremely bad Boards before I landed here, by far this is the best board I've found.
Thanks to everyone.

I'm not sure who it was who said it, but I agree that deleting your account has some attention whoring attached to it.
If you don't want to be here, just stop reading and stop posting.
Deleting your account so everyone knows you are gone seems like throwing a tantrum and making sure everyone hears you yelling.
JMO.
I come here for the humor and diversity of thought. There is always something going on in these boards.

I don't post a lot, but I lurk quite a bit. I come here to listen to all the good advice everyone gives and the many differing opinions on the different subjects.
I may not agree all the time, but I do listen and it opens me up to different ideas and I think it's made me a better and more open person.
I've taken away lots of good advice from others about money matters, spending, saving for retirement and living frugally. I don't think I'd be where I am today financially if I hadn't found this site and the old MSN boards.
Thanks to Moonbeam for getting this board set up for us and to all the Mods for their hard work. It's very much appreciated.

I don't post a lot, but I read plenty.
I've learned a lot, but I am also entertained by quite a bit.
I also find it funny that every time I pay my mortgage (3.375 for 30 years), I pay extra. I say to myself Phil would have a cow. LOL.

I like the people on this Board. Even when they're beating me up for wanting to wear a 30-year old dress to a fancy wedding, they make me think. And I hope people can learn from the things I've done in my life- both right and wrong.

I find it difficult to see how anything here would get me extremely angry--unless I overshared information and felt badly about it.
If something did upset me, I'd just take a break--but not delete the account. I find that childish.

I absolutely second everything said above. There is not enough money in the world to be able to buy the wide variety of knowledge, skill, expertise, experience, perspective, advice and opinion I gain from this board.
I also like the anonymity of the board. Not because I have anything to hide, but because none of us have pre-conceived notions of who we each are as individuals. Sadly, in real life, our outward appearances lead others to judge us before they really get to know us. Here, we are free to be who we are without judgement, bias, prejudice, or even mere personal physical preference. Here, in my mind's eye, you are all as beautiful, lovely, handsome, and attractive as your wise and generous spirits are online. We can all sit and "chat" while wearing our YM-approved 10-year-old faded Walmart clothes with our roots showing and be recognized and accepted the brilliant, caring individuals that we are. :-)

I say to myself Phil would have a cow. LOL. I have the exact same mortgage and I pay extra (so it's paid off by the time I'm 65). The Phil ghost is haunting me though and I may have to stop doing that. ETA: I've been on this board for 6ish years and I've learned so much from it. Yeah, sometimes there's too much drama but I love everyone here and wish everyone the best. I'm so appreciative of everything I learn here and the support I've gotten from here. My only complaint is that I'd be a lot more productive IRL if this board didn't exist. Oh well...there's worse things.

Well, I stay because I believe I am VERY SMART and its my calling to spread my superior intelligence to the lesser mortals. J/K On a serious note, I mostly lurk, there are days when I post quite a bit and then weeks pass before I login again. I keep busy at work and hardly get time during the day. IMHO, this forum is cyberspace for all of us. Disagreements and time waste happens in real life too. If I don't walk away from them in real life I don't see any reason to walk away from a cyberspace disagreement. Step away, cool off, and continue on.

I like the people. I'm also a massive introvert and people make me anxious, so message boards are nice, because I can get nice, metered doses of human behavior without actually having to expose myself to the uncontrolled environment of being around actual humans.

I like it here. I like the people. I like many of the topics. (OK, the tax section scares me.) It's a great place to visit and read when I'm bored, have a question, want to connect, or just want to lurk. Of course, the moderator perks and hefty salary make it all worthwhile.
