Rather than counting total calories, I have always liked the "cut out 250 calories of food and add 250 calories of exercise each day" plan. It makes it seem simple. The key is not how many calories you are eating and expending, but that is less than before. That's why I think I should have done a baseline recording of what I normally take in. I wouldn't be surprised if 1200 calories wasn't cutting 1000/day for me. I think I'll have more success with increasing exercise and leaving my food alone. Either that, or I'm not eating smart enough and not getting all the protein and nutrients I need cutting back that much in the calorie area.

I've come to the conclusion that 1200 calories/day is BS for me. After 5 days I was weak as hell. I got home and could barely get off the couch last night. I should have logged what I ate for a week without restricting it, because I bet it was darn near double that. Im really surprised MFP started you at 1200; that's the bare minimum for daily intake. I remember when I started using mfp it put me at something like 1600 calories (I can't remember), and every few pounds lost meant 10 calories came off my daily limit. I had my weekly goal at losing one pound per week. It was a gradual calorie reduction and not a plummet. Since I'm trying to maintain my current weight it has me at 1500 calories, but I run 4-5 days a week so I eat more than that.

It logs me at 1200. I have days I eat less than 1000 (and app yells at me) and days I go over at 1500, so I thought it was accurate for me. I am a small frame 5'3 117lb goal (highest and healthiest pre-babies weight). I have a deskjob so when I clean house or carry baby, I can log that activity, otherwise sedintery is accurate for me. Maybe you move around more than you give yourself credit for and need more food. Up it to the next higher activity or just keep track of the small things, like food shopping is considered slow walk, or look up "cooking, food prep" for when you are standing at the counter for a while. At my job there at times when I stand at the med checking/prep station for quite some time, so I log that as same calories as food prep.
Basically the more the app thinks you did,the more you can eat. A busy day can give me an extra 500 calories to eat and still reach my goal.

Well, I don't know what I'm doing wrong because even when I changed the goal loss from 2lb/week to 1 and upped the amount I was going to exercise to 5X week, it only upped me to 1230 calories/day. It must really think I need to lose weight!

That's ok. It doesn't adjust for exercise. But you will notice that when you log in exercise, it says you are allowed to eat another 100 calories or whatever the amount may be that you worked off. You want 'remaining" column to be close to zero. Right now my remaining column in around 900. If I go to the gym and log in another 500 calories exercised, I will have 900+ 500 = 1400 calories left to eat. If I eat all that, my remainder will be zero, and will still allow me to meet my weekly one pound loss goal. I have a feeling you have been exercising and not logging/eating the used up calories. That 1200 calories is your baseline. It says that's all the calories you should need to replenish with food for just breathing and going to work and sitting at a desk all day. You NEED to eat more if you exercise.

Then, post it here so we can see what's going in. Don't leave anything out. I've helped my patients lose weight over the years, and have used this tactic to get started. It's not a lot of fun, I'm afraid, but it does get you started and let you know exactly where in the process you are now. It doesn't work as well for those already working other methods, but it's something to try when you're just getting started, if you'd like.

First because I eat a lot of ethnic food and I would have to give you all the ingredients and recipes for you to sort of figure out what it is. Second, because like I said before, I have a food addiction and sometimes is not what I eat but how much I eat; too much. It's not something you can fix with a diet, or counting calories, etc. Yes, I put on weight easily, but the problem is mostly in my head. Posting what I eat won't help me. I know what I have to do, but I haven't been able to change my behavior so far. I kept a diary when I was going to WW because they asked you to do it. I did not like WW, I never felt they helped me in any way, their "plan" just looked like a money grab to me. The food diary in itself is not a bad idea, but you need to have an appropriate program to go with it. I am starting on a OA group on Monday. Group therapy is what worked best for me with depression, and I want to give OA a second chance. Another thing that usually uplifts me is making plans for the short term future, and start working on them. Right now I have a summer class, a 4th of July weekend at a summer resort, and my yearly visit to Argentina in December as my short term plans.

I'd be cautious of using the Mrs Dash (any of the blends). Many (if not all) contain MSG (even though it might not be listed as MSG on the ingredient label, it might be masked under another name).
M.S.G. is B.A.D. for heart patients or people with a heart condition.
Course sea-salt and a peppercorn medley (which you can buy in the spice aisle in containers with a built-in grinder) are pretty much all you need to season foods.

Just did now. Based on how much activity you do on an average day, the calories in the right column will be the number of calories that you will be able to eat at your goal weight. If you start eating those calories right now (eating like the thinner you), you will eventually become that thinner person. As you get closer to your goal weight, your weight loss will start to slow down. It is OK to eat a few hundred calories less per day (200-300) to speed up your weight loss at this point.
Activity Level Daily Calories Sedentary (little or no exercise, desk job) 1631 Lightly Active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/wk) 1869 Moderately Active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/wk) 2106 Very Active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days/wk) 2344 Extremely Active (hard daily exercise/sports & physical job or 2X day training, i.e marathon, contest etc.) 2582
I also think I'm more active than I give myself credit for. I always check "sedentary" because I sit at a desk all day for work, but I have horses and 3 acres of yard to take care of. so go with the 1600 calories and if you do vigorous exercise (wear a heart rate monitor) add a 100 calorie snack and see how that works.

Yesterday I ate 1600 calories with no exercise (was too exhausted) and today 1900 with doing yard work and mowing for 5 hours plus a 40 minute walk. I feel MUCH better.

Ava, I suggest researching group exercise classes. The Y may have some great choices. You should eventually find one that you feel comfortable in and can modify the activity to your ability as you get stronger. Not only would you get the fitness benefit, but also the social aspect. I'm pretty quiet in real life, even at a fitness class, but being around a group of like minded people can be uplifting.
Not all people who attend classes are super thin or fitness snobs. There are lots of people like you- some are juggling work, school, family. Others are just starting out and feeling self-conscious. It could be a good way to get out of your "comfort zone". Challenge yourself to just show up to the class, do the warm up, 10 modified minutes, walk in place during the actual workout, whatever. Somewhere to start and the social support of others, even if they are strangers. Combined with the support from OA, you may get the right momentum to make real, positive changes!

Yesterday I moved around all day. I ate >1900 calories and only went over by 137 calories! I did a sprint triathlon today and that burned 900 calories in a little over 2 hours. I need to do more of those.

Ava, I haven't read the entire thread, so forgive me if I'm repeating, but have you had a glucose tolerance test? You fast for 8 hours (usually overnight), then they give you a nasty orange drink and take blood and urine samples every hour on the hour for 4-8 hours.
If you are hypoglycemic and eating the wrong things, that would explain the huge appetite. A hungry hypoglycemic craves sugar and starch, which is exactly what one should not be eating. And since a drop in the blood sugar causes so many unpleasant symptoms (headache, body aches, nausea, mood swings, brain fog), you will unconsciously eat until you're stuffed every chance you get to avoid the blood sugar crash. If you are very overweight, then chances are, there is some instability in your blood sugar, even if it isn't full blown hypoglycemia.
I'm hypoglycemic, so what works for me is frequent small meals of lean meat and vegetables. I only have fruit or sugar if I've recently had my protein and never on an empty stomach.
Stress and stomach problems can also screw around with your appetite too. I lost a ton of weight once I went on stomach medicines.

One thing I like to do being a type A person is to set goals for myself. And not a goal of 'weight loss' or whatever. But an EVENT. So, I suggest doing something like signing up for a 5k in 3 months time, and then religiously applying the C25k program. For me, I did a half marathon on Mother's day. I signed up in January, and it motivated me to get up off my ass and do some extended cardio. I don't have weight loss as a goal, but I wanted motivation to get off the couch and get a higher level of fitness. And it worked! I beat my goal time by 2 minutes despite being sick the whole week before. And I ran with a friend and know I could have easily shaved 15 minutes off my time. Yesterday I moved around all day. I signed up for a tri before I got pregnant (er... 3 yrs ago) and I'm just starting to think about doing my first tri again. Getting the training in for the swimming will be hard, I think. I'm recovering from a shoulder injury but think it might be time for me to sign up for another one! The running and biking I think I have down, especially if I do sprint. I might be inclined to do Olympic distance if I can get the swim training in.

It's too easy to sit on my butt drinking wine, parting with money keeps me on task.

Actually, it doesn't cost much or I probably would have cut back a long time ago. I get 24 packs for between $5-$6. So, $25-$30/month. I don't drink alcohol or coffee, so that's pretty much the extent of my beverage budget outside of the occasional glass of milk or orange juice.
