I highly advise putting the scale away. Take it out once every few weeks. That gives you a better picture of what you have actually lost. I can't do that. I have "slight" control issues and like to know what is going on Me too! I gained weight when we redid the bathroom in the old house because I wasn't weighing myself regularly while it was torn up. Everyone's different, though.

How do you "friend" people on MFP and can they see all the crap you are eating? Apparently I am not smart enough to friend people. I tried to friend Meghan, since she posted her username and it told me, no users found. I have 1 friend on MFP- how unpopular am I? there are privacy settings for your diary and you can set it so no one can see your food. That happened to me. I googled myfitnesspal meghan981 and did the same with athena53 and they popped up. BTW - I'm gs11rmb on that side as well.

I step on the scale most days- but I am also detached from it and know that often, I tend to lose the most inches when the scale doesn't move. I understand it is also one of the least accurate ways to measure progress. the number on the scale doesn't make me crazy- it is just a guide sometimes.

Not true. 2% Kreider farm milk - 11% sugar. Same for whole milk. Kreider farm that is. I sell good milk, kosher. Maybe for WAWA brand that is cheaper it is true...not here. Did you read any of the links that oped posted? After reading them, I decided to give whole milk a shot for my oldest ds, who (lately) is constantly hungry. He had a glass of whole milk with dinner yesterday and he didn't get hungry again before he went to bed. I normally do not read links, why? Good?

I quit using the scale years ago when I was pregnant. I had to dig for it last night to get a starting weight. It wasn't pretty! LOL
Well, I didn't know about this "friending" thing. If I had I would have kept the same username as I have on here. I wonder if it's changeable?

I actually gained a bit.
I know I sound like a broken record but check your sodium intake. Cut that way down and all the retained water will leave.
Of course you will spend a day or two in the bathroom but you'll feel better. huh....I am not going over the number that MFP is "allowing" me, but honestly, I know nothing about loosing weight so am not sure how good their numbers are. I still don't understand how is it that they "give" you 1200 calories a day regardless if you want to loose a pound/wk or pound and a half. I would have thought the calorie number should have changed 1200 is the absolute minimum and if you read through the MFP boards you will see that there are some other ways that do a better job of calculating your calorie goals. also remember to eat your exercise calories, but remember the calorie counts on MFP for exercise are too high.

I like the Michael Pollen approach to diet - Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. I think it is a sustainable model to follow for life. Also better for the environment. If you only eat french fries when you have to peel the potatoes and heat the oil and make the fries then french fries become not an everyday food but a sometime treat.
We spend way too much money eating out and I am trying to be more proactive in making food from scratch at home. I'm not a believer in forbidden food, but I am trying to cut back on things like bread - carb heavy things and portion size. I've never gone hungry in my life so I don't know where my need to eat until I'm bursting comes from but it is a real struggle to only take 1 portion and come back later if I get hungry. It's not like food is not available if I truly am hungry so I dont know why I feel the need to stuff it all in now just in case. I have found that it doesn't matter how much I eat - that I will still get hungry 2 hours later..so whats the point of eating twice or three times as much food as I need to not feel hungry?
We went to Italy on a cooking vacation and actually lost weight. I dont' believe we were much more active than we normally would be, but what we did do was eat all fresh food and hardly any bread. There was plenty of alcohol though so we were surprised.

I haven't read the studies, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but did they examine causation or just correlation? I'm asking because maybe the parents of skinnier kids choose more fatty milk since kids prefer it and the parents feel their kids are OK drinking a little more fat while the parents of the overweight children may be choosing 1% because they're trying to help their children lose weight. So there's definitely correlation, but not necessarily causation.
Like if you did a study and discovered that of people who wear glasses, almost all have poor eyesight. Well, yeah, that's because people with poor eyesight choose glasses, not because the glasses caused the poor eyesight.
(PS - I started wondering about this when they did the studies that showed diet drinks are correlated with higher weights. My first reaction was - no duh, heavier people might be more likely to choose diet drinks...)

I think it was Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead (movie) which talked about the milk issue.
They said that when they remove the fat from the milk then the sugar water is left.
Drinking it doesn't make you full because there is no fat in it.
They seemed to say that full fat milk is better for you because of the fat/sugar combination and the way it is processed in your body. It actually made a lot of sense.
My best weight loss times come when I stick to basic foods, even things like real butter, and avoid processed stuff.
Also, I have to exercise or I lose nothing. Even if I eat nothing, the scale doesn't move. YMMV.

From what I have read, if you drink whole milk it makes you more satiated and you tend to eat less. There is not a huge amount of difference in calories between whole, 2%, 1% and skim milk....only about 50 calories/cup (145/122/102/90 respectively).
If drinking 50 more calories saves you eating 200 calories extra because you feel fuller, then that's a loss of 150.

On the subject of whole milk - I have constant "debates" with our pediatrician bc to me anything other than whole milk is just colored water and I am not paying $6/gallon for colored water. 2 out of 3 of my kids are very skinny. But dr keeps telling me that it's not now that I should be worried about, but getting this much fat will effect them in the future. I don't know....may be it's "old country" in me, but giving them non-whole milk just makes me shiver. My husband drinks only fat free milk and graciously allowed me to buy 2% for the kids. But somehow every time I go to the store they are out of 2% so I just get whole milk

I eventually stopped even reading at the community boards, it's like here, some people love one way of doing things and everyone else is wrong and then their opposition is there to pipe up too. I can only handle bickering here I must like you guys more.

If you're accessing it via whatever browser you have on the iPad/laptop then you'll find the community. If it's an app you downloaded, you're just SOL. But the app has pie charts and junk the website doesn't.

I logged in today, and I love the way this thread is going. I hope it helps many people get motivated and eat healthier, exercise more. Personally, I am doing fine. I had to face the issue at some point. I've already found a OA meeting I can attend, even when classes start because I don't have classes next semester that day of the week. I hope this group is more open and lets people really talk what they are going through instead of reading from a book and interpreting the literature. I started doing the treadmill at the YMCA. I went to the pool the other day. It's huge and I loved it; except that the water was really cold. They told me it's always that cold, so I'll have to get used to it. I'm not worried about looks or "being thin", I just don't want to end up with illnesses I can avoid if my weight is a little more under control. Thanks all for the support.

Question to those who lost weight after having kids - did your stomach ever got to look the same or at least similar to what it looked pre-kids? If so, do you think it's age, your activity level or just good genes?
