In praise of a double standard for Donald Sterling
I disagree. I write in defense of double standards. Not always, not often, but when warranted, using double standards allows us to be faithful to other values that are often more important than the value of fairness. We like to treat people the same way because it is fair to do so. It is enshrined within the political traditions of our country that people ought to be judged the same way, lest factions prefer their own kind. In many arenas, like the law, and in the voting booth, single standards for all is the most important value we can uphold. But in others, it isn't. If we aren't ever allowed to treat two things differently, then we're bracketing other very important principles.
theweek.com/article/index/260741/in-praise-of-a-double-standard-for-donald-sterling Saw it. Thought I would throw it in for possible discussion.

There's no fool like an old fool. After you get a certain age, you better keep it in your pants or you will weave a tangled web!

It's only racist if a white person says it. Not that zibazinski will read this because she has me blocked, but this is not Sterling's first time on the racism/discrimination merry-go-round.
In 2006, Sterling was sued by the Department of Justice for housing discrimination. He refused to rent apartments to blacks and people with children. Sterling was fined $2.6 million.

The owners are held to a different standard because they sign a different agreement with the league. He doesn't have grounds for a lawsuit because part of the agreement he signed was a binding arbitration clause. The best he can do is appeal through the NBA, and he'll lose there too.

I think he was defending his right to privacy. We have a former coach who is well liked, respected, and an all around nice guy. His wife is the most racist person and very outspoken about it. Of course that's never printed or talked about. White football players and their wives/girlfriends were never invited to their home. But that's okay because she's black but if she were white and said/acted that way, she'd be crucified. i disagree that it is OK, but i would also point out that black people did not enslave whites for 400 years. is the double standard ok? of course not. but i think we can understand it well enough. researchnews.osu.edu/archive/whtslav.htmWHEN EUROPEANS WERE SLAVES: RESEARCH SUGGESTS WHITE SLAVERY WAS MUCH MORE COMMON THAN PREVIOUSLY BELIEVED
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A new study suggests that a million or more European Christians were enslaved by Muslims in North Africa between 1530 and 1780 – a far greater number than had ever been estimated before.Yes, those poor oppressed white christians who still carry a grudge to this day... Nope, isn't it time we ALL got over something that never existed even in our grandparent's lifetime? Greeks enslaved romans and vice-versa, the english enslaved the irish, the Saxons enslaved pretty much every one they conquered, and Atilla the Hun - well I think you get the idea. It's wrong, it's over, and it's time to stop using is as a crutch/dividing force in our society.

But white on white slavery was so different back then. Fiery-tempered Dana's violet eyes blazed with fury. Of all the male slaves on the Viking isle of Fyn, none was more insolent than tawny-haired, breathtaking Bendan. Now, naked and splendid, he awaited her punishment. Yet even locked in the farm's dark storehouse, the arrogant Celt triumphed; grinning ruggedly, he agreed to obey his beautiful Pagan captor...IF she would take him as her lover...
Hot with outrage as she melted with desire, flame-haired Dana struggled to forget this bold offer. She was about to be betrothed to another - a violent, powerful, and cunning lord - and she knew loving Brendan could only lead to disgrace or death. But Dana could not hide the passion that swelled within her, and when Brendan wrapped his magnificent arms around her, she knew she would dare all for his embrace, as would any woman who was...By Love Enslaved... Totally off topic, but the wife of an old boss of mine was a bodice ripper romance novel author. We weren't close enough for me to ask whether she writes that stuff because they have an awesome sex life or a cold one. I've always wondered though.

Seriously? It was recorded by her. She was looking to get famous. Unfortunately she has the intelligence of the typical idiot in our current generation. It has backfired and now her suga daddy money is cut off. Now she is going to have to sell all those Bentleys he gave her to pay off the lawsuit. But she will be President someday so it will all work out...

Yet you don't see women pinning all their woes on the evil dominating males or it making news every time someone says something sexist. It's time to get over it.

There is one part of the article that is good. The part about the artist, Yes from here on let it be known that I, oldcoyote, global warmer, be also called an Artist, I now expect much greater leeway in my postings!

As for the NBA and the players union, that thinks that the decision was just, let's see this happen.
The next time a NBA player is arrested for say drunk driving, assault, domestic assault or any violation of the same nature,
while screaming " the only reason you are arresting me is because I'm Black"
Let them be held to the same level of punish as Sterling.

So thinking something is the result of racism should be cause for punishment? Not sure I follow the logic...If anything this whole episode should be proof that racism still exists. It may not be rampant, but clearly there are still some really racist folks.

I don't know specifically about Cali, but there is all kinds of talk about gender inequality...The 77 cents on the dollar, the glass ceiling, etc. There is still a very large equality movement with groups line Lean-in & such.

I suspect Mr. Sterling will have the last laugh, all the way to the bank. He has successfully started a bidding war for his franchise. Either he or his GF released the tape. I am betting on him.

Yeah, that makes sense. He'll get so much more this way than if he had just announced that the team would be up for sale soon and started inviting bids....

This is interesting. Donald Sterling couldn't write off fine under legislation in House
A California lawmaker introduced legislation Thursday designed to prevent sports owners from turning league fines into a business expense that can generate a tax break. The legislation from Democratic Rep. Tony Cardenas follows the National Basketball Association's $2.5 million fine and lifetime ban of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. An aide to the congressman said they were unaware of any specific team owners who have used their fines to generate a business-related tax deduction, but Cardenas wants to remove that possibility entirely. Cardenas said fines are meant to be a punishment, not a business expense. "Subsidizing bad behavior should not be the responsibility of American taxpayers," Cardenas said in a news release announcing the bill, which he is calling the "Stop Penalizing Taxpayers for Sports Owners Fouls Act." The legislation would address any fines imposed after Dec. 31, 2013.

As much as I hate to admit it, Sterling would have a very strong case for getting this repealed as it is obviously a tax targeted at a specific individual (or business). The stupid legislator should know better.
