Speaking of popping, I want to see a Botox face-off between the wife and girlfriend, just to see whose lips can handle one more shot before exploding. Sheesh, for a billionaire, you'd think he'd give them the money for better plastic surgery work.

I mean, he's a pig so I don't really care what happens to him. Let him get his just desserts.

He's already got his just desserts. An estranged wife and a mistress (not sure if there are kids involved with the wife) who will fight to the death (and beyond) over his money. The mistress should still be OK. She'll find another sugar daddy stooge sucker boyfriend, even with that inflatable face.

Just pointing out that he has donated to Dems. I didn't know that, but I did hear on the news this morning that the NAACP has been criticized for accepting donations from him- which they now plan to return. We are now seeing the vaunted "political correctness" process at work. Perhaps these donations were his way of cleansing his soul. I found out on Jeopardy the other night that the phrase about charity covering a multitude of sins was actually coined by a man who was Sainted. Buy your way into heaven Sir.Jeopardy must be wrong, because it's a quote from Proverbs 10:12. In some of the older Bible translations, charity and love are used interchangably. Modern translations say "Love covers a multitude of sins"

It was just on the news here that he was indeed banned for life - and also fined $2.5 million.
<ETA: Tenn beat me to it> that is totally within the power of the NBA. just wait for the hue and cry from the "free speech" conservatives.

Well, with true liberals anyway, there is no need for the (sarcastic) quotation marks.

I hope not- maybe a handful of the usual nuts- but I doubt normal conservatives are going to want to intrude into the NBA and how it handles its own business. No Constitutional issues at all.

Our girl "V" may have a little problem, It seems that Cali has a law that in a recording like this, both parties have to be aware of it. Penalties both civil and criminal.
If this is true, some chili was just added to the pot.

If this is true, some chili was just added to the pot. it won't impact what happened to this guy. at all. he will still be banned from life from the NBA, and probably be forced to sell his team at a huge profit (boo hoo). however, it might be well to note that none other than Kareem Abdul Jabbar (who was an assistant coach under this guy) said precisely the same thing. he said that the whole thing stinks. the guy who made the statement stinks. the woman who he said it to stinks. and the recording stinks. criminals all around. he said it, not me.

A racist and adulterer. A scorned mistress. A wife pissed off at the two of them for mudding up the family legacy.
They all deserve each other.

It's not illegal to record a conversation in California, however the recording isn't admissible as evidence in a court of law unless all the parties in the recording gave consent to be recorded outside of a few specific instances. This whole thing was handled outside of the court system, so it doesn't really matter.

Good point- recording conversations is not illegal at all- the problem comes up when the government does it and tries to prosecute on evidence collected in that manner.
And for a private company- they can invade your privacy and do whatever the hell they want- and the GOP is going to take their side- because that's what they are paid to do.

I think you are giving me more credit than I deserve here, I had to go back to see what I had posted at the beginning. Sometimes I'll make a comment "just to stir the chili", and I'm no good at poker. a couple of comments, 1. The old man has broken no laws with his comment, 2. V. appears to have broken the law with the recording. 3.The old man may say because of the illegal recording, He has suffered severe financial damage.

Neither did the NBA in banning him for life. 2. She broke no law because the taped material was never intended to be used as evidence for a court case. 3. As DJ has noted above, if Sterling is forced to sell the team, he looks to put in his pocket $200-300 million bucks, far, far more than what he paid for it years ago. What a hardship!

Loss of personal reputation, DJ Sorry I couldn't resist. $1.9 billion dollars buys a lot of good personal reputation. Especially if they are contrite for past comments and actions.

This isn't the precedent, it happens all the time. The only difference here is the moral standard. The only good thing I find in this situation is that the majority of people find his comments and behaviour unacceptable and he isn't going to be allowed to stay in a position of power over people he obviously has absolutely no respect for. And feels no need to pretend he does.

gdgyva beat me to it - I was going to post something similar. What Sterling said (and his obvious personal beliefs) are disgusting. But, is it really ok to "force" someone to sell a possession or asset because of it? Case-by-case, of course, but I too fear there may be unexpected consequences.

I'm thinking of an even better punishment than merely having to sell the team plus the fine.
Have the wife and mistress go on a reality show. Let's call it Celebrity Botox Death Match.
Each one gets a needle of the stuff to the face, trading off until one of their mugs finally explodes. That gal is the winner.
The loser gets to spend her life with Mr. Sterling. That way, all three of them get what they deserve. The two women get more lousy cosmetic enhancement than they already have, and he gets the dubious privilege of dealing with at least one of them for the rest of his time on this earth.

They can only force him to sell if there is a legal way of doing so. He owns the teams as a franchisee of the NBA. In that agreement, there are lots of legal stipulations. One of them is that owners can be forced to sell if there is a 75% vote from the other owners.

He owns part of the NBA & had to agree to their rules upon purchase. This is within their rules that he agreed to. This is not setting any sort of new precedent. It isn't really the same as most assets you can own.
