How do any of you know what his intention was? Maybe he thought it was his house ir maybe while intoxicated he thought it might be a good idea to rape or rob her. She had no obligation to find out. Rapists in suburbia usually don't take a taxi to their unknown, random victim's home.

The man hadn't even gained access - and she couldn't see him - she just fired away.
I have to wonder if she'd even had proper gun handling/training - I seriously doubt it - by the video/pictures of the door - she shot at random without aiming - and probably without even shouting a warning through the door that she was armed.
A weapon in the hands of someone not trained to handle & use it properly is a recipe for disaster.
From the links, the guy got the cab to drop him off in front of what he thought was his house - and he tried his key. Now he's dead at the hands of someone who was clearly not proficient on using a weapon. The bullet marks on the door show this to be the case. She just blasted away in a state of panic.
Now he's gone - she probably will get a light sentence (if any) due to her age, but she probably won't be able to be in possession of firearms anymore either - which is a good thing - for her or anyone else's safety.
You don't know this. it is not uncommon for adrenalin from being scared shitless to make you a lousy shot. Even cops hit a target LESS than 30%. The cops in NYC fired 17 shots, 2 hit their target in one shooting, so you think an older woman can o better than cops! She will get her firearm back.

The first I would know is hearing someone trying to get in through the front door, and I would have no idea how they arrived.

Looks like our gun hating poster finally found another ally. How nice. Thankfully rational people still exist.

Sorry it was a drunk instead of a career criminal but I can only pray that some criminals might think twice if they think THEY will be the victims instead of their intended victims.

Well, it makes me think that more guns are a good thing. That if someone is breaking down your door, do you really want to be a sitting duck and hope 911 EMS arrives before they get in?

When seconds count, the police are minutes away.

We have no close neighbors and it takes 15 minutes to get the police to our house, so no way would 911 help. If DH is gone for the night, I keep his loaded 45 next to me on the bed, and I would have no regrets if I used it on someone trying to break in.

Remember to yell loudly, "Hey! Crazy woman with a gun on the other side of this door. Do you feel lucky? Wellllllllll? Do ya, punk?"

I don't think it sends the message you can blow away whomever you want on your porch if the lady "gets off".
If I shoot the Jehovah Witnesses who show up on Saturday mornings no matter how I try to spin it it's going to be pretty darn obvious they don't pose a threat to me and I shot them purely b/c they annoy the crap out of me.
If I am home alone with my children at night and a man who is not my father, brother or husband starts yanking on my doorknob that's a different situation. If I sit around waiting to see if he gets in I could be dead.
And sorry I am not going to stick my head out the window to see who it is trying to get in and confirm for whoever it is there is a woman alone inside the house.
That's a grey are where I have minutes/seconds to make a decision to defend myself or take my chances. I'm sorry but I'd rather risk making a mistake and being alive than end up dead b/c I didn't want to assume anything.
I'd regret it, I don't think anyone enjoys taking a life that isn't a serial killer but I'd be at peace with the fact I was protecting myself and my children.
Again it's very easy to sit here and judge this woman when we know it was her drunk neighbor on the other side of the door. We can sit behind our computers and be smug about what we "think" we would have done and she should have done.
But we don't know what we would have done in that situation. She was a scared 64 year old woman with someone at her door trying to get in. She shouldn't have to play 40 questions before she's allowed to decide to defend herself or not.

Pure snark on my part, of course, but there's a non-absurd correlation between substance intoxication and home invasion.
Apparently, drugs cost money, and people keep that stuff in homes. Who knew?

Also, most rapists consumed alcohol or drugs before raping their victims.

Most rape victims, too. It's one component of the appallingly low report rate on that particular crime.

Also, most rapists consumed alcohol or drugs before raping their victims. What proof ìs there (ìn this particular case) the dead guy had rape (or robbery) on his mind? We know for fact this guy was the woman's next door neighbor. The deceased was law abiding enough not to drive home drunk. And yes, the woman would not have known any of this. Besides the tragedy of his death, ìt's also a tragedy the woman did not know/recognize him as her neighbor. If she had, this shooting might not have occured.

That's my point. I don't know. Neither did she. I wasn't her OBLGATION to wait to find out one way or the other.

I think there's a difference between shooting random people on your lawn and someone on your porch. Why is the porch not considered part of your home? Not that shooting any old person on your porch should happen, but with most houses standing on the porch is already under the roof. If it was a screened in porch and he had to open the screen door to get to the main door - does that count as being in the house? They've already entered/breached one door.
As for waiting for someone to breach the front door. Most entry ways are, what, around 5 feet long (give or take depending upon the house). How long does it take to travel that 5 feet? How about how long when you're barreling through the door and are running? It gives you like 10 seconds to respond to the breach in the door and pull the trigger. Not a lot of time.
