I'm not the most observant person - especially when I'm out shopping. Other than Hobby Lobby, I guess I don't even notice whether a store owner is advertising their beliefs or not. I'm more worried about getting in and out with what I need. However, if I do find something in a business that offends me - whatever that may be - I just won't shop there.
I guess I do understand those who are offended or just don't wish to patronize those establishments who advertise their beliefs. I am pro-life and if I walked into an establishment with a huge sign with the telephone number of the closest abortion clinic, I would be offended. Again, tho, I just wouldn't shop their anymore. As long as I wasn't in one of my more "crazy" moods, I probably wouldn't shoot the sign with a paint gun or rip it off the wall or scream at anyone or anything like that.

I am more brand specific when I won't buy something more so than not shopping somewhere. There are several companies brands that I will not knowingly purchase. But that's just me.

Also, I will say, this is my biggest beef with Dave Ramsey. I feel like he uses Bible verses to sell his products to churches. Nothing wrong with someone making an honest living, but he seems shady to me. thank you for validating my gut feelings!!!

I read something a long time ago that made me laugh and I wholeheartedly agree with. Paraphrasing:
Religion is like a penis. It's fine to have one, and it's fine to be proud of it. But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around. And please don't try to shove it down my throat.
The same can be applied to politics and the like. I am fairly certain that no one at work knows anything about my religion or politics. I have strong feelings about both, but there is absolutely no reason for me to be discussing either at work or in any professional setting. And trying to force me into any conversation that made me uncomfortable would pretty much guarantee not getting my business.
And honestly, anyone who can get offended by the phrase "happy holidays" or a "holiday tree" must have walked around looking for reasons to get offended and ran out of legitimate ones.

I wouldn't hire somebody that mentioned their religion in an interview. Not that I have anything against organized religion, but I'd think anyone mentioning it in that setting has a pretty good chance of yammering at me about salvation all day at work, and nobody likes that shit, even other religious people. So, if someone was an orthodox Jew and let you know that in an interview because they couldn't work after sundown on Shabbos, would you exclude him based on that?

There is a business that has bibical/Christian sayings on their board every time I drive by. I don't mind sometimes whatever they have posted gives me something to ponder on the drive home.
I was surprised when I found out they're a real estate firm. I would have guessed Christian bookstore or something. Their street advertising is completely unrelated to what they do. They aren't the first people who'd pop into my head when buying a house.
So I always wonder what's the point when potential customers get a disjointed message.

There's a big difference to me between being openly religious, and pushing their religion.
A jew who wears a yarmulke is being "openly religious" in that they are open, not hiding it. A catholic who wears a crucifix that is visible is being openly religious.

Because of the weather and road conditions, I was listening to our local hic radio station this morning. A very nice professional sounding commercial came on for some plumbing contractor type business at the end was the line "Make time for God in your day". Now after reading this thread, the first thing that popped into my head was - how dishonest are these people!

I have not encountered this. The closest is probably Hobby Lobby but I love the place and it's not really in my face.

Yup, if my business required me to have an employee to work certain hours and their religion precluded them working those hours, I wouldn't hire them. Next?

There's a kiosk jeweler in the area that ended their commercials with "if you don't have a place of worship you should try ours".

My business is open until after sundown every day, so yeah that's probably a deal breaker. In that instance mentioning religion in the interview is relevant so it makes sense to do so, and wouldn't set off my proselytizing alarm bells. Friday and Saturday are my busiest days, like most retailers, so somebody that can't work from Friday at sundown until Saturday at sundown isn't a good fit for retail.

It never has seemed to affect the success of those businesses.

Those people don't sell birthday presents for 9 year olds that are having parties on Saturdays and Sundays.

lmao! I wish I could say I had a good working relationship with my old boss. he had all kinds of religious stuff displayed in his office. I'm not sure what flavor of Christian he is, nor was I interested enough to ask. the less I had to interact with him, the better. I will say that I was approaching the point of saying I was taking Halloween off for religious reasons though. Hmm, I never would have considered you a Satanist.......... Halloween is religious to Pagans....

I didn't know about the views of the family that owns Hobby Lobby. I went in there once at midsummer, so didn't have any idea that they were anti-semites. I will never buy anything from them again.
As far as people who mention their religions in passing, as long as they just keep it at a minimum, it doesn't bother me. If they mentioned it during a job interview, then I would have to give them a pass if I was the interviewer.
I've known some very good people, and some very bad people, who wore their religions on their sleeves. The good people could get a little tiresome, but I didn't think of them as hypocrites.
If someone wants to ask me about my faith, I will discuss it with them, and answer any questions that they have about it to the best of my ability. I guess to that extent, I am a fisher of men. But the person needs to show me that they want communication from me about my beliefs. I don't push them on anyone who is just in the vicinity. I am quite an eclectic Catholic, too.
That being said, I think they should be called Christmas trees, not "holiday" trees. Hindus, Jews and Muslims don't seem to use them in their holiday celebrations ! Pagans do.
