Hello all! I didn't know there was an ongoing thread about fitness. Maybe I'm only noticing it now because I've recently decided to start exercising and eating better. It looks like you all have some established routines and such. I'm at the very beginning of this journey. Never exercised regularly, except for a yoga practice that has become sporadic at best.
I don't have much to add to your thread yet. I'm nursing an injured shoulder right now (again!) so I can't go full steam ahead with the exercising right now. My plan was to get a personal trainer, but I don't want to spend the money until I can get the full benefits. I'm trying to come up with something I can do at home in the meantime. When I figure out what I'm doing, I'll be back.
Keep up the good work!

So I have been kind of avoiding this thread because, well - I'm pregnant! Honestly I was shocked that it happened so quickly and it's thrown me for a loop health-wise. Since I'm still overweight, I'd love not to gain a ton and to keep my activity level up. Except that my stomach is finicky and only wants carbs and I feel a little tired some evenings and don't have the motivation to walk or workout. I did 50 sit-ups yesterday though! Not sure if I will ever have a flat stomach again, but I can try!

greeniis10 yeah... I know it will hurt for a while before it gets better. I just keep telling myself that. I'm pretty sore today, which is no fun and I have another appt. tomorrow morning. missk82 CONGRATS!!! @pinkcshmere Welcome! sorry about your shoulder while you are working on getting it healed, you can check out some lower body workouts or maybe just get some long walks in. Feeling pretty sore and crappy and hoping to re-start workouts next week. Trying to get my steps in anyway, which is hard, since I feel crappy. Heading out of town Friday morning for a weekend get away with DH to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary. Hopefully the weather holds out and we can get some hiking in like we wanted and be able to roam around and explore. Otherwise, we'll be indoors checking out wineries.

Thanks for the welcome sarcasticgirl.
So far I've just been paying more attention to what I eat and being more diligent about yoga, just to get back into the habit of setting aside part of my day for moving. Even with the yoga, I only do poses that don't put pressure or weight on my arms and shoulders. Enjoy your getaway and Happy Anniversary!

I had to flip thru back to January to see what my initial goals were for getting healthy since its been so long since I was on this board....
I'm proud to say I went from 159 lbs to 148 lbs...
and then I got PREGNANT...
I'm 8 weeks and i'm hovering around the 150-151 marker... so it looks like i'll be back on the weight loss plan after I have my baby!

So, how is everyone? Doesn't have to be necessarily diet or exercise related - just a "general health" check in. Besides, maintaining good health IS the first step to fitness, right?
I was sick with the flu last weekend, but recovered fairly well. Cardio is always a struggle after being sick because I play "numbers games" with the treadmill and the elliptical re: calorie counts. I don't trust that I actually burned the amount of calories they say, but I do know that since I input the same stats each time and I do the same amount of time that in order to be progressing and working out hard enough that that "calories burned" number needs to INCREASE steadily. I hate when I get stuck for while, which is what happens after I've been sick. But, it's just another plateau and I'll get past it.

back is starting to show improvement! but wouldn't you know... I end up pulling a my quadriceps while stumbling down the spiral staircase in a lighthouse!!! lol minor set up. But it had me pretty immobile for 2 days and limited still... it will be part of my massage therapy on Thursday. Still maintaining the same weight... even after being out of town for the weekend and having every freaking meal be some sort of fried fish and potato. my god, I am so sick of both!!! all prepped with food this week, big salads for lunch and health-ish dinners planned. I am going to ask my Doc on thursday about being cleared for weight training so I can get back to that! hope you are feeling better greeniis10 - the flu blows!

I'm working on staying motivated. And reminding myself that all the walking I do daily for every day errands counts! And I don't mean from car in middle of parking lot into Target. I mean walk half a mile to the closest grocery store, walk another half mile to the bookstore, 3/4 mile to work, etc. My mom got me a pedometer that I'm going to start using. I think seeing how many steps I'm taking each day will help me feel better. The scale is holding steady, so I must be doing something right!

Hey guys!!! So quiet here again!! First- congrats KILROY on your goal!!!!
Therapy is going pretty well on my back/neck though having 2 hour appointments twice a week is killer with my busy work schedule. I have been working late a LOT lately which really screws with meals planned for dinner and with getting workouts in. My Dr. Is super awesome and thorough and very holistic. She's caught a few things in my blood work that my endocrinologist didn't address and I am going to ditch my metformin for pcos and try some natural stuff that is supposes to address more than just the insulin resistance. I am giving it a try for 3 months and then will have new blood work and see if there is an improvement. I am excited to have a natural option and am hopeful that it works well!
I have maintained my weight through all the long hours and the pain and therapy and not being able to work out. I am clear to do yoga/ Pilate's and weights (no kettle bells) I really want to be able to get to swimming before winter hits but my schedule doesn't allow for that yet.
Hope everyone is doing well... Especially all the new moms to be!

Thanks for the update, sarcasticgirl! I've been plugging along ok, but nothing earth-shattering to post about.
My new plank routine is: 90 sec. regular plank, then 60 sec. side planks (1 on each side); I try to do two sets of those each weight workout I do, but sometimes I only make it through one set.
I've also decided that a good motivator is to work on the body parts you already like or see improvements in faster instead of mainly focusing on the "trouble spots". I've recently gained a bit more definition in my biceps and shoulders, which makes me want to keep trying harder. Plus, since it's still warm I wear lots of tank tops and sleeveless shirts.
Anyway, that's it for me right now. Summer is winding down and kids are back in school so I do have to say I'm happy to not have the gym locker room swarming with little girls. They are super cute, of course, but the noise level can get deafening sometimes!

I have not posted in awhile. While for the most part I have been getting my steps. I have not been eating well and the scale reflects this.
I have lost my motivation.

I haven't posted for awhile because I have been uber-busy. I am working 45+- sometimes as many as 60 hours a week, am back in school part-time and my Mom has announced she is moving out. I have 2 houses to go look at this weekend, although I am not holding my breath. I have a great agent.
I am still losing sizes, and am the FT night manager at work. I am retaking 2 of the 3 classes (yes I passed 2 with an A and B even) from the spring, plus CLEPping a class and taking supervisor and management classes for work.
I miss everyone terribly

ners - motivation is something I continually struggle with. Even though I know to expect it it's still hard to overcome. It comes and goes in weird cycles for me so I try to just go with it and do my best. When I'm really sluggish and struggling I just consider my workout as part of my workday: no options, no choices, just do it. Granted, those aren't my best workouts, but they are better than nothing.
mizbear - your mom moving out is a good thing, right? (if I'm remembering your past posts correctly). Working full-time PLUS overtime AND going to school sounds exhausting! Hang in there and congrats on still losing sizes!

Today was a good day exercise/diet wise. Ran 5 miles outside (and I'm hoping this fall like weather stays around for awhile), then did more walking at the craft fair we went to. My allergies as starting to finally feel under control, so I'm hoping fall is a good season for me! I'm not looking forward to my first real winter in 4 years tho. But, I'm just going to ignore the fact that it will get cold here, and enjoy this gorgeous 70 degree sunny weather for as long as I can!!

Popping back in after a while. Totally bagged my last round of DietBets, so that was $100 down the drain. What is NOT down is the number on the scale! Boooooooooooooooooo hiss boooooooo. Also, I went to the orthopedist finally about my hip(s) which have hurt since I was 18 but have been searing with pain lately. She diagnosed bursitis and prescribed PT. The PT lady actually thinks it's more like dual-hip impingement with a probable right laboral tear with a *touch* of bursitis! Ugh. Thankfully, I can still do everything but run as we loosen the spasmy muscles, restrengthen everything around my hips, and figure out what the fudge is going on in there. The good news - I'm rowing 3 mornings a week now and the overall skill of the group is getting to a point where we are rowing 1-3 continuous "pieces" for sometimes 10-30 minutes at a time, each class. Even having been a college soccer player, these are some of the most exhausting workouts I've ever done.
- The rowing is giving me some kick ass muscles. <<flexes gratuitously>>
- The rowing is also highlighting how much I slouch. I've been conscious of throwing my shoulders back every time I can now!
- Scale is still holding steady ~185. That's still almost 10# down from where I started so it could be a lot worse.
- Since my row-day alarm clock is set for 4:30, getting up at 5:30 to get am workouts in the other days is like sleeping in!
Back to it....I'd like to be down to 175 by Thanksgiving so I can, for the first time in 3 winters, wear my nicely tailored work pants.

Yes, all in all DM moving out would be a good thing, however, she has a lot of debt and abhors housework. I don't see how she can make it on her own unless she changes a lot. The big thing that is bugging me is that she keeps reneging on our deal about she couldn't move until I was done school since she skewed my finances by moving in- rent went up, then had to move, etc.
I am actually looking at buying a little place closer to work.

Just thought I'd throw this out there: did you have your hips x-rayed? I ask because I too had really bad hip pain (just one hip, started out of no where) and my regular doctor dismissed it twice as a strain or pull or back issue, etc. The third time I went to her I think she was tired of me and sent me to an orthopedic surgeon. He did x-rays right in his office and I was scheduled for surgery 4 days later. Turned out I had Avascular Necrosis (Osteonecrosis). I had to have a bone graft done and was on crutches for six weeks. Healed fine and I haven't had any trouble since, BUT, if I hadn't had gone to that surgeon when I did my entire hip was near collapse. Not to be an alarmist - just a PSA! Hope whatever you have goes away quickly!

Hey everyone! Looks like the thread has gone silent again.
I am still maintaining... I am doing my best with all the extra hours I have been working. I am currently nursing a cold that I got from DH. It seems to be working its way down to my chest. Awesome.
Fall is coming and I am excited to sport some cute fall clothes. I just started weight training again... I can't wait to get over this code and be back to working those muscles!

I've decided to just work with bodyweight exercises that don't stress my shoulder until I get it together. I have another appointment with the orthopedist Friday. Eventually I want to get into working with freeweights, which is why I'm considering a trainer, but that will have to wait until my shoulder can handle it. For now, the bodyweight exercises are challenging anyway. I try to pay close attention to my form, so that hopefully it's not such a challenge getting that part right when/if I move on to freeweights. I didn't have a tape measure to measure myself when I first started, but just from what I've been doing, I can see small improvements in my torso and my pants fit my thighs a bit tighter. So slimming a bit in some places, growing a bit in others. That's fine with me. I've been sticking to my new eating habits too, which is a big accomplishment for me. That's all I have. Keep up the good work everyone!

Have got to get my eating habits back on the correct track. Eating too much of wrong foods, like ice cream and potato chips.
My sinuses have been acting up today.
Have not been getting in my steps,
I guess I better set a goal for the week. A minimum of 91000 steps from Monday September 15 thru Sunday September 21st.
Water consumption-- move average up to 20.
Try planks at least 3 times.

Glad to see some recent posts! After a 3-day flu about a month ago I, too, ended up with the coughing, runny nose, stuffy head thing that is going around. I had it for a full 7 days. Today is the first day I'm noticing it getting better, so I'm glad about that. I rarely get sick ever, so I guess I'm paying my dues now.
Cardio has been a struggle, but I've kept up with weights. I've also started monitoring my carb intake. I'd already stopped eating bread, rice, pasta, tortillas, etc. quite some time ago, but I wondered where I was at with my carb intake in spite of that. It was still pretty high. I've slowly cut down on fruit and added lots more vegetables instead. I'm certainly not promoting the whole "keto" diet (I've tried to read up on it and people seem to take it WAY too seriously! much too complicated for me), but I do have to say that the effects are I don't have to do nearly as much cardio now to maintain my weight/size. Well worth it.
Plus, with increased weight lifting I've noticed more muscle definition. Anyway, it's working for me right now, so I'll try to stick with it. Good to hear from everyone!

For the next two weeks I am going to have my house to myself. My DH will be in Florida dealing with his dad's house, my mom is back in Michigan instead of working out of her office down the street from me. Just ME for 14 days!!! I cannot tell you how excited I am to be able to eat whatever I want (which usually consists of whole wheat pasta, soup and sandwich, hummus and veggies) and not have to eat out! I feel like I was eating every meal out for the last 3 weeks while my mom was splitting her time between here and Michigan. I got on the scale this morning, and while I've been maintaining, I'll be interested to see if I can drop a pound or two just by eating at home. Oh, and did I mention-14 days of not sharing a bathroom!!!!!! Am I too excited for this? I should probably throw in that I'll miss my DH, which I will, but my god, I'm looking forward to some quiet alone time.

Ah, flamingo, I'm jealous! Sounds terrible, but my DH retired 3 years ago and they have been some tough years (for me!). I absolutely love ANY time I get the house to myself these days. Peace and quiet does not come easily anymore, unfortunately.
Enjoy your "you" time!

flamingo- I understand. I relish having an empty house! I rarely happens but when it does I LOVE IT! And Kudos to you for maintaining while eating out! I have a hard time with that. I feel like I retain water like CRAZY and generally feel crappy when I have multiple meals out in a small time frame. ENJOY your time! @pinkcshmere what body weight workouts are you doing? great job on seeing changes in your body! ners hope you feel better soon greeniis10 great job on finding what works for you! my body acts similarly when I drop grains and keep to 2 servings of fruit a day. I've been working my way back to that sort of diet, but the moment I get sick, i want bread and chicken noodle soup!

sarcasticgirl, I've settled on doing squats, lunges, bridges, planks (they've never seemed to bother my shoulder, but I don't hold them long either) and jumping jacks in circuits for now. When I can complete 4 circuits (I felt like a complete wimp when I first started and realized I could barely do 1 circuit ) I plan to use that as a warm-up and focus on making the basic exercises more challenging for my workout, if I still can't get to the weights by then. It's kind of frustrating that I'm so limited because of my shoulder, (even pushups are out!) but I just focus on progressing with what I can do right now. I'm officially not suppose to lift more than 10 pounds but repeatedly lifting even less than that stresses my shoulder.
Since I'm mostly working my legs (and my core), I'm sure that's why I'm seeing the changes in my thighs. The torso changes (fat loss) are probably due to my improved eating habits and a little because I'm moving more than I had been. Y'all might not want to know about the small, positive changes in my behind, so I'll type that in small letters.
I also try to fit in a yoga session at least once a week, on a day I don't do the bodyweight workout.
Thanks for the "great job"!
Like I said before, I'm new at this. I settled on the bodyweight exercises after poking around online and reading about how to use them effectively for strength training. Something sparked my interest in strength training and I didn't want to stop before I even started just because I can't do weights right now. If you have any tips or experiences to share about getting fit, I'm listening.

Pink, I don't recall if I've mentioned it on this thread previously or not, but the book "Body By You" by Mark Lauren has some great non-weight required exercises. It is brief, to the point, and has pictures! Some of the exercises I can't even attempt yet, although they look deceptively easy.
Those are also good moves to learn to use any time you may be traveling and confined to a motel room or other area without a gym.
