I'm not a huge fan of dill unless it is a dill pickle. I rinse my capers before using them.

Hey all, I've fallen off the wagon a little but. My husband is out of town for the week, so it's been harder to even find the 20 minutes for a mini workout. Tonight I will try to do the core challenge while on the floor with baby. He thinks its funny anyways and will probably want to crawl on me. Should be fun!
Ambellamy - hugs. Good luck working that out. I would not be okay with my husband looking at that, and we would probably have to go to counseling or speak with a chaplain/pastor/priest, etc. I hope it is just a lapse and not an ongoing problem.
Feel better bsb! Take it easy for a little while.

bsb and chiver - thanks for the concern, I appreciate it.
According to some recent studies, intermittent fasting seems to mimic the pattern of feeding experienced by early humans in the paleolithic era, when the hunter/gatherer lifestyle and modern human genomes are thought to have developed. Halberg (2005) in the Journal of Applied Physiology explains this concept of the "thrifty gene" much better than I do.
jap.physiology.org/content/99/6/2128.full
Basically, it seems to mediate insulin resistance so that we more efficiently utilize fat stores as sources of energy. There are other historical studies, as well as ongoing studies that have shown that it is advantageous because it stimulates utilization of visceral fat for an energy source, has positive effects on cholesterol levels, and can mediate risks of heart disease.
I'm following the advice of a doctor and making sure that any fasting days I undertake are on days that I am not training hard. It sounds like a lot on paper, but the half marathon training schedule is a 3-month buildup to the distance. I used to run a lot more and play hockey 4-5 times a week, so this doesn't seem like a lot to me, since I will only be playing hockey one day a week and running 5 days with 2 days off.
Thanks for watching out for me - I will make sure that I follow my body's cues. I'm hoping the fasting diet will help me break some really bad eating habits I've fallen into lately. If it can do that and nothing else, I will be happy.

chiver- hope you get the BP thing worked out. Perhaps could it have been something else other than a paleo diet? generic- glad you are working with a dr. on your 5-2 diet. I'm not sure I could swing that at all- I'd be a cranky pants for sure! Good luck with your therapy and getting back to a more active lifestyle. Just be sure an listen to your body. missk- you could totally use baby for an upper body workout too... and lower! just sayin' 17 days until my caribbean vacation! I started walking in flip flops last night to get readjusted to them. And the scale finally moved (in the right direction) a bit today for the first time in over a week- success!

If it can do that and nothing else, I will be happy. I'm very happy to hear that you have spoken with your dr and will be following medical advice with this. I am going to check out your link after I post this. I bolded what I did from your post because the diet plan I reacted badly to was the Paleo diet. from the wiki entry, after three weeks of eating almost 100% paleo, I found myself in the ER with blood pressure ringing bells at 196/131. I've stopped following that eating plan, added a slight dose of an anti-anxiety med (I don't like hospitals, and having that many people running around my room ignoring me did NOT help matters) and a week later, I was reading 120/80. another two weeks brought me to yesterday's check-in at 118/82. this morning, however, as I said I felt dizzy on my ride in to work and pulled a 153/101 on the cuff in my building - left arm. I checked in with the RN on-site just before lunch. my right arm pulled a 153/103. the RN looked a little alarmed, had me lean back in the chair and try to space out a few minutes before trying again. deep breaths and the like. 5 minutes later, my left arm pulled a 135/95. I have an appt to go see my dr again in the AM. I don't like that it's all over the map like this, and am really wishing I could go back and NOT have done paleo in the first place. I am not at all trying to tell you what you should or shouldn't do, other than to pay attention to your body. I started paleo with the same intentions you list - to break some really bad habits and cravings. my dr's take was that our bodies have evolved since the days of cavemen, to be able to process the foods we have now that they didn't - and that doesn't mean the processed crap that comes in boxes and is loaded with salt and chemicals. her general advice to me was to make healthy choices that include ALL of the food groups, and to make sure that I am getting enough calories to keep the metabolism going. <steps off soapbox> the gist of this is that I wish you to be well

chiver- hope you get the BP thing worked out. Perhaps could it have been something else other than a paleo diet? after the 30-pt jump between yesterday morning and this morning, I honestly don't know what it is. I am absolutely confident in saying that paleo had *something* to do with it, because a week w/o and it was a 75-pt drop. I have a feeling that tomorrow we are going to discuss my keeping a food/activity diary to see if there's anything to cause swings like that, or if this is just my system still working out the kinks of the settling down from the crazy scary spikes from a few weeks back.

chiver - please don't take this the wrong way at all, but this could also be self-fulfilling prophecy. You get scared your BP is high-> adrenaline kicks in -> your BP goes up-> you get more scared, etc. Especially since you're afraid of doctors!
I actually had something similar happen while at the doctor a month or so ago. I had to bring B, who got really upset in the parking lot because she was freezing cold, which sent my BP up, then had to deal with her in the office, and the dr could not get my BP to come down. Since I'm on meds where high BP is a potential issue, I then got even more stressed because I knew it wasn't the meds, it was B's presence and upsetedness upsetting me, but I couldn't get the dr to believe me, which made me even more stressed etc.
BP is one of those things that's really easily screwed up by little things. I guess the moral of the story is, while you should definitely be cautious, don't psych yourself out if you can help it?

chiver- BPs jump sometimes, but if it is not staying at that level, then there is generally little cause for concern. If you are worrying about your BP rising- your BP will rise. it is a catch 22. Your Dr. can prescribe you a home BP monitor cuff, that might take some anxiety away from you and if you get in the habit of checking it yourself, it becomes more common place and the act is less likely to cause a BP increase. (i have 2 coworkers that have done this)
Kilroy- congrats on the job offer! sorry, i missed the post before when you were interviewing for it!
I need to work a chocolate splurge into my day. i feel it coming on.

I've had two visits to the dr's office where I show a 120. since yesterday, it just seems like it's all over the map and I haven't done anything out of the ordinary. and no worries on my taking that the wrong way. I know I'm a head case about medical stuff.

Thanks for the insight chiver - I will make sure I monitor my BP. I think there is a difference in our approach, in that the pattern and timing of eating is what I'm changing, but I'm not cutting anything out of my diet. My goal is to practice moderation in all things. Well, except I'm trying to get off the sweets. Maybe not 100% of the time, but this chowing down a box of Mike and Ike's a day has got to stop!! I hope you get your BP situation stabilized, that is scary.
I bought my hubby a blood pressure cuff that connects through the iPad for Christmas so that he could monitor his BP, since he had issues with high BP for a little while. He completely cut salt out of his diet (except for what is already in the food, he never adds any) and his BP has been good for several years. I've even learned to cook with less salt, which is huge for me. You might want to look into it, it's very convenient and will keep your readings so that you can take a look at trends.
Kilroy - yay!!
I did it - 3 miles outside today. It was only 30 degrees with 30mph winds. The only thing that sucks is that people don't shovel their sidewalks. I was at 13:05 pace (snail!!), but part of that was the times I had to walk through 2 foot drifts or walk on the ice floes from melting snow. Now I remember why I love running in winter! I stretched afterwards, which I have a bad habit of not doing, so I'm feeling quite good about my workout today. The back felt great, and the nice endorphin rush from running feels awesome right now!

mizbear - and all around good juju for tomorrow chiver - sorry to hear it was still high when the nurse took it. I was really hoping the cuff machine was giving you a high reading. generic is right, salt can be a trigger. I have a history of heart disease, including high blood pressure, on BOTH sides of my family. That's why one of my early weekly goals was to get my sodium intake down once I saw what it was using the calorie counter. Double check all side effects/interactions for any meds you're on, both prescription and OTC. Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Actual restful deep REM sleep. See if there is any new physical activity you are doing - even if it doesn't feel like it's more exerting than your other activities. bsbound and sarcastic are right. When you have a spike so like the nurse said and remember to breathe so you can get it back down and not be in that vicious self fulfilling prophecy. You should consider getting an at home BP monitor to go with your food/activity log. You are fortunate in the sense that you recognize when your body is telling you your BP is too high (some people don't realize it until it's almost too late). But, monitoring at home might let you see when you start creeping up on the high side of "normal" and help you figure out if it's some underlying cause/trigger. Still really hoping you just need more time to adjust back from the paleo. bsbound - take it easy for another day. Stomach viruses are no fun. Feel better soon. sarcastic - don't you dare come back from your trip and tell us about warm beaches and hot sun and soaking in the pool ambellamy - more kilroy - SUPER CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ON THE NEW JOB!!! The job I have now was actually one of my worst interviews, at least I thought so! Sometimes we are our own worse critics. How's jury duty going? Not too draining I hope? generic - half marathon training? I'm impressed. Keep at it! missk - a baby crawling on you is just like adding weights right
I got my household chores done as soon as I hit the door. Still raining as predicted. And cold. What else is new though? Going to use today as my off day since I had so much to get done yesterday. I am definitely feeling those crunches from yesterday too. Already lit the fireplace and plan is to eat dinner and snuggle with the for the rest of the evening to enjoy my "off Tuesday."
Rain is *supposed* to slack off by tomorrow afternoon. If so, I'm going to walk the doggies and hit the jump rope to keep myself moving.

Had a fail with a new recipe. Been trying to vary my proteins so I don't get bored. I like tuna, but that whole mayo tuna salad thing doesn't work really well for my calorie count (especially when you add in the 2 slices of bread). I saw quite a few recipes for mediterranean style tuna salad. Made it and had it on top of spring greens. Didn't like the tuna salad. It had olive oil, dill, capers, celery, tomatoes, garlic, lime juice, salt and pepper. I will end up having it for lunch again tomorrow. I'm wondering if it will taste better after it sets overnight. But, I'm not too optimistic. As much as I hate to waste food, I will most likely trash the rest. Monday is usually my "off" day, but we have bad rain moving in and it will be here for the next 2 days at least. Managed to run by the grocery after work. Going to try to get my yoga and crunches done tonight. It's already raining (and dark) so I won't be able to jump rope and walk the dogs. I've got to force myself to get those in at the end of the week once the weather clears. Onward and upward ladies! Try just swapping mayo for fat free Greek yogurt. I can't taste the difference.

Thanks for all the hugs everyone. I know for some people it might now be a big deal/issue, but for me it is. My husband and I "waited" until marriage and for two 25 year old's to do that in today's society isn't easy... I think that's part of the reason finding the smut hurts so much... because we don't really fit into the world mold when it comes to that stuff and that stuff isn't what I signed up for when we got married... But we are working on trust now... and some practical things that are helping. If what were doing isn't working, then the next step for me is talking with some people at church ... and since my husband is a very private person, this alone is kind of incentive enough on some level. But the Monday was better and Tuesday has been okay. Last night I was looking at my steps and I was under 10k so I just walked around the bedroom and marched in place and moved until I crossed the marker. I think I might get in a nice walk hopefully after dinner to get my steps where they need to be. Tomorrow is my treadmill run. I'm hoping to increase the speed slightly and maybe go another minute longer. I also busted out the food scale and prepped a bunch of healthy food options for work for the week. I'm hoping to make this mexican quinoa meal this week that I can just take. Fitness update: 1. Game Plan: Every day, 10,000 steps. 2. One 5 miles walk/jog a week outdoors 3. one Bootcamp class at work 4. one 30 minute treadmill no walking jog. Steps Feb 1 - 17,217 Feb 2 - 10,048 Feb 3 - 14,977 (5 mile outside walk/jog!) Feb 4 - 10,480 Feb 5 - 10,572 so far (31 minute treadmill jog at 4.9 speed -- no walking!) Feb 6 - 8,538 Feb 7 - 4,021 Feb 8 - 11,278 (Bootcamp! woot woot) Feb 9 - 13,593 (5 mile outside walk/jog) Feb 10 - 10,035

Good luck mizbear!
amy - way to go on the steps! You have every right to be upset - I just wanted you to know that it's really common for guys to do that. I heard on the radio they tried to do a study on the differences between men who watch porn and men who don't and they were not able to complete the study because they could not find ANY men who didn't watch it at least occassionally. I know that other people have different opinions on this than me, but your husband is doing something literally every other man in the country is doing. Again, not that you shouldn't be upset, but this is a common weakness in the males of our species...
Didn't work out last night, had a terrible headache again. Weighed in this morning and am up 3 pounds from last week. To be expected based on what I ate, really. Back on the diet as of yesterday and really want to get in a workout tonight!

good luck today mizbear! quick update on me. today's appointment registered a 120/88 on the BP - so normal again like Monday. still no explanation for yesterday, since I wasn't doing anything that stressed me out! so, I had some blood drawn and will have to to a clean pee test (had coffee this AM) tomorrow to test various levels of some amine in both fluids. there may be something else going on underneath the paleo/my freaking myself out that took me to the ER. basically, my dr told me that they had a woman awhile back that had had a miscarriage. after that, her BP was spiking strangely like mine. they all figured it was hormonal and it would level out in time, but well after the preggo hormones had stopped, she was still spiking BP. what they are testing my stuff for is whatever it was that she had. Dr told me, but I deliberately tried to forget so I don't google it and scare myself half to death in any case, while that's getting worked out, I am off caffeine, alcohol, tobacco (which I don't use anyway) and something else that was on the list. the list is in the car, will double-check before I go pick up lunch in a little bit.

Hugs and best wishes for MizBear! Chiver, I hope things get resolved soon & everything is OK.
Marion, thanks for the congrats. Jury duty is just tedious & tiring. I have exactly 1 day off all month where I don't have work or jury, so that's a lot. And now I have to figure out how to resign gracefully & start my new job as soon as jury duty ends.

Today was a shitshow. 2 filled donuts, a bunless turkey burger and a giant pile of fries... Oh and a mounds bar. WTF?!?!? Let me just say, I had pretty much everything i've been craving for weeks... All in 1 day. I am guessing 1800-2000 calories?!? Luckily I am not even remotely hungry... Lots of green tea, a major workout, 15000+ steps are on the agenda for tonight. And I should still have a deficit despite my less than nutritious choices. Afterwards a long soak in a hot bath and we'll put this madness being me!
