AZ cop had to resign after finding out she wasn't a citizen

She later told investigators her family told her she was born in the Unites States.

     She did not really find out until this summer ... that she was an illegal alien through, I believe, a confrontation with her mother," Graves told the AP.

     Figueroa’s citizenship status came to light when her brother, a member of the U.S. military, applied with the State Department for a passport and federal authorities learned he had a sister who was an Arizona state police officer

We really need to fix this- not fair to punish kids if their parents lied to them- especially when they put their life on the line in public service.

As for the fairness of enforcing immigration laws, perhaps the courts will make an exception because of Ms. Figueroa's work as a law officer. If not, her future is in Mexico, the country of her birth.

US citizenship is not a commodity to be awarded at the whim of a reactionary public. It is awarded and revoked through a process of law.

Citizenship has historically been used as an inducement to military service. It was a contract laid out by the state a priori. If no such contract exists in this case, then Ms. Figueroa has no legal basis for a claim to citizenship. Her upright conduct isn't sufficient.

You either believe in the rule of law or you believe in the rule of "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" for whatever EVT1 deems sufficient back scratching. If at any point the US state needs soldiers or civil law officers badly enough, trust me that they'll make citizenship an inducement to serve.

She did. This is from a different article:

This is very sad ....... for her and for us.

I'm against the 'dreamers' ..... not because of their status. Because this is giving the parents a

'reward' for their dis-honesty.  Encouraging other couples to come here illegally and doing the same thing ...... and hoping to get away with it.

This is so painful for the kids.  Growing up believing they are US citizens and all the time the parents are lying to them.

So once again we are supposed to hold society, not the parents, responsible for the predicament in which the parents place their children?

Why do we even have laws at all if people can pick and choose which ones they want to follow? 

While I feel for the predicament these kids were placed in by their parents, it is not the responsibility of the US to right every wrong done to an individual.

The are paths to citizenship, I wish her well in legally persuing them.  Perhaps if we didn't make it so easy more would try to follow our laws instead of break them.

There are rude and nasty people on both sides of the political spectrum.  I'm on the same political side as one poster but am horrified by the things that she writes.  I can only hope and pray that she is trying to get a rise out of people.  I've personally called that poster out on several occasions (no clue which one you are talking about) because I don't agree with what she is saying.  Making excuses for the actions of someone in your party because someone in the other party is just as wrong is crazy (I love the "well, Bush did this" when one of Obama's fuck ups come to light).
