Like it has been mentioned, I'm sure it's a cultural thing. When in Rome..... But if your carpet or floors are so precious, maybe guests aren't such a great idea or have an outdoor party. That's like buying furniture that no one is allowed to sit on. I grew up in a house like that. Everything was so precious that no one lived in that house but some fancy magazine cover photo shoot. I vowed my home would be a place of comfort and joy. We do attend some parties up here. Some people remove their shoes and some don't. DF does, I don't.

I just love learning new things about posters that I thought I "knew" - you know - you picture someone a certain way and then - boom- totally different. I'm a lurker, so I'm surprised anyone would have a mental picture of me. I do think in the earlier years that people thought I was a guy, which is fine by me. Well, if I remember a poster well enough, I create a picture

It's all about the weather here and which door you use (floor types). I don't think I have ever asked anyone to take shoes off , some offer. In other peoples house I usually judge by floor type, outside conditions and where my shoes have been.

POM, you did this on purpose, didn't you?! (I remember the old SS thread ) I've never asked people to take off their shoes. We get all four seasons--Cold and snowy, wet and muddy, hot as hell, wet and muddy. If I'm going to be in and out, I leave my shoes on. If I'm only going to be home for a little while, I might leave them on. If I'm going to be here a while, I take them off--I hate wearing shoes, especially in the house--my stairs are narrow and harder to climb with shoes, and when I sit on the couch, I put my feet up. The only place shoes are not allowed is on the couch. I'll even run out to the car without shoes on in the rain or snow, just because I don't want to put any on (I really should dig up my old "run outside and grab something" slippers). It does suck a little when I let the dog in from outside and she's been in the snow or rain, she leaves little wet spots on the floor that are COLD. And if I'm wearing socks, it gets them wet. I usually only wear socks inside when I'm cold though. As much as I hate shoes, it feels weird on the rare occasion someone asks me to remove them in their house. It seems a mix of about 10% no shoes, the rest don't care. If I see that they take theirs off when they come in, I always ask if they'd like me to (and hope I don't have any holes in mine!)
