Several parents are saying they plan to sue, claiming that Holloway's reposting the tweets is damaging to their childrens' reputations, and because social media sites are checked by colleges these days, the schools could find them, identify them (some of the tweets apparently also got posted to some of the kids' FB pages, and Holloway has those as well), and decide not to admit them. The same kinds of checks are also done by potential employers these days, Angel. It's not illegal to do so. Ethical? Not sure - it's a gray area. But neither a college nor an employer has to inform a rejected applicant the reason for rejection. The applicant would never know. FWIW, I am defending Holloway. I think turnabout is fair play. If the kids were dumb enough to 1) break into the property, 2) destroy it and 3) tweet about it, then they get whatever is coming to them. I'm still not following the logic. If the schools are checking social media, then they would have found it anyway on the kids own posts. The kids put the info out there, not Holloway. And as far as protecting kids, this won't keep them out of every college or hold them back forever. But, maybe 2 years at a CC would give the kids time for the lesson to sink in. I would think a misdemeanor or felony on your record would hold you back far more - the parents should be thankful Holloway isn't doing more with the pictures. Or they could have drug their kids to the cleanup and the kids would have a great college essay to write - "How I made a huge mistake, And what I did to make it right". Shows a lot more character than - How I made a huge mistake and how my parents spent a fortune to hide it" The kids can remove the tweets, or delete their accounts at this point. But once Holloway reposts them, they are still there. So even though the kids remove the evidence, Holloway still has it posted. And you're right - it would likely not keep them out of college. And you're also right in that making them admit the deed and clean up would have done them more good than harm. But that's parenting today, for many people (not you YM'ers!). It's easier to do the knee-jerk thing, protect-my-kid-so-I save-my-own-reputation thing, than it is to instill real character and responsibility.

Devil's advocate: Unless some of the pictures include the party goer actually doing the damage, then is there actual proof? Could the parents win the case in that regard? There are photos, Iggy. Holloway did post them. The police were trying to use them to make positive IDs.

Regardless, they are still trespassing which is illegal. I am guessing most party-goers did no damage, doesn't mean they weren't breaking the law by attending. Agreed. However, the attendees (or their parents, lawyer, etc.) could defend by saying my child was told it was Johnny's uncle's house, and they had permission to be there.... Don't get me wrong: I think what happened is inexcusable, and the subsequent parental behavior abhorrent.

BUT, I saw none of the kids actually punching walls, peeing on things, etc. As mentioned, just playing Devil's Advocate here.

He's nicer than me. After only 1 showed up I'd probably say f it, I tried to help your stupid kids but they didn't want it, maybe the court system can do a better job than me, and file charges against them.
I most certainly would respond to any suit with my own suit for damages and a lovely visit from the cops to your precious kid.

I see the point that the parent of the kids are trying to make. I think it might be hard for a lot of us 'older folks' to understand what it is like in these days of social media. I am sure there are pics put there of me drinking while underage in college. The difference is that, pre Facebook/Twitter/Instagram, it didn't end up out there for all of the world to see. My generation made dumb mistakes too, it was just harder to get caught because not everyone had a stinking cell phone camera with them at all times.
That being said....my kids would be right there cleaning up. And I'd be hanging with Swamp, etc having a good time. And then my kid would be driving my drunk butt home. And they'd be contributing some amount towards the damages. And writing an apology letter (maybe even publishing online or in a newspaper...though I'm not sure I'd go that far into shaming them). They'd lose all sorts of privileges, etc.
I wouldn't ever think of suing the guy, but I can see where they are coming from.

I just read through the website. Holloway has a lot of character, made me tear up. It looks like he is doing the cleanup day after day - 4 showed up yesterday. He is using this as way to get out a message against drugs and alcohol. He is asking all the donations be sent for breast cancer. Amazing.

I understand why only 1 kid would show up. "Hey, all you kids who trashed my house and were drinking underage and breaking all kinds of laws...show up to my house for a picnic!". It does kind of stink of a sting operation to have the culprits arrested in one place (as well as to catch any kids they couldn't really identify in the first place).

And these idiot helicopter parents are all worried that their little darlings' chances of getting into college might be ruined on account of Holloway's posting? Good. If I had pulled a stunt like that, I might be washing floors at the college of my choice - after my dad knocked me into next year. I disagree with this. If I really thought that my kid's chance of getting into college would be ruined by a stupid stunt like this I would be fighting and doing what it took to protect them from that. Not to worry. protect them from owning up to something like this at that age and they'll be doing something even worse in college!

This is why I'm glad I don't teach school anymore. I actually have had children tell me they don't want to do what we are doing and expect that I will jump to please them like mumsy. I see hellion children out in public with oblivious parents. I'm tired of parents who think a restaurant is a playground and they are sitting there enjoying their cocktails while the rest of us are having our meals ruined by your lack of parenting.

I used to think this way, then I had a kid. I'm much more sympathetic towards the parents now. Sometimes you are just at the end of your rope. DD is still a baby and she's very good in restaurants. But sometimes she cries and I just can't stop her. I do my best.

Sweet Baby Jesus, my dad would have kicked my ass if that were me...he would have dragged me there by the hair and I would have been cleaning wtih my tooth brush! If my dd did something like this, she would get the same treatment. If she is dumb enough to not only do this but put it on the internet (which to me is bragging) then damn right she is going to suffer the consequence.
And make no mistake, kids are freaking stupid these days. My dd did something God awful stupid this summer and her bff took a video and put it in vine this summer! (vine is a website where everyone posts videos). My husbands friend saw it (his daughter is friends iwth mine) and told him...dd still doesn't have a clue how she got found out (and grounded for the ENTIRE summer!)

Never happened in restaurants, but there has been times when I have been waiting and not received good service and I am irritated too. I let them scream because I can't, but wish I could. My best example was when DS had a really bad ear infection and I came to pick up the medicine when it was supposed to be ready, only it wasn't - it was going to be another 20 minutes. So we sat in front of the pharmacy at Walmart and eventually he started crying and screaming because he felt horrible and I let him. I consoled him, but I didn't try to quiet him and frankly I hoped he was bugging the shit out of every employee in the pharmacy because it was their fault we were there waiting and he didn't have the medication that would help him feel better.

That is totally different than letting your child run amok while you booze it up.

Screaming and crying kids are one thing. Children running amok all over whatever establishment with no parent in sight is quite another. And that is something I cannot wrap my head around. It's flat out dangerous. We'd have gone home and stayed there until we learned how to act in public.

I hope the parents do sue him. And I hope they get one of those judges that gives the parents a piece of his mind and give them more punishment than they would have gotten before.

They better pay the price now and learn from or get themselves killed doing something stupider. While San Diego wasn't a small town when I grew up, the neighborhood I grew up in was like a small town. Somehow my parents always busted us for doing stupid stuff. It doesn't take a really bright kid to learn the lesson...you WILL get busted so don't even THINK about it.

Send my child? Oh, no! I'd accompany my child. My child would fervently pray to be sent, but it would be to no avail. I will be right on your little butt making sure you do the very best job you've ever done at anything in your life.

WTE is wrong with those kids? WTF is wrong with those parents??
With only 4 kids showing up for the reparations day, I'd be suing all the no-show's asses off + their parents for lack of parental control. I'd make it my mission. I'm not as nice as the guy this happened to (clearly).

My DD and I would have been there all day, and some extra. She would be alive, but blistered from the tongue lashing I would have given her. And if I was Mr. Holloway, I would have already hired my attorney and have had the lawsuits prepared against any the parents of any kids that could be identified in the video.
What a shame.

I was hard on my DD, and I didn't even ground her for the whole summer. But when she was acting up the most, she got mono and that settled her right down for months at a time. She was literally grounded, in bed, for weeks. Mother Nature took care of that for me ! She almost didn't make it to another birthday when she "borrowed" my car after her license was suspended. She was forbidden to drive, but when my DH to be ( 2nd marriage ) brought me home from a date one night, we found my car and DD gone. DD was eighteen at the time, and "needed to get out of the house." Oh, the hell that broke loose. It was all verbal, but it was legend. She never did that crap again. Ever.
