At some point sheer stupidity needs to be held accountable. My Mom would have killed us if we done anything close to that.

I'll admit I don't have much understanding of the law, but how could a parent possibly win a lawsuit against him? All he did was call attention to the tweets of the kids themselves. I would think he could easily press charges against every person that was in a picture or posting pictures and probably sue them for damages to the house.

At least my kid would be alive to help clean. If I had done something like this I wouldn't have shown up because I'd be six feet under in the backyard.

I grew up in a really strict household, my mom ruled it with an iron fist.

I would think he could easily press charges against every person that was in a picture or posting pictures and probably sue them for damages to the house. Several parents are saying they plan to sue, claiming that Holloway's reposting the tweets is damaging to their childrens' reputations, and because social media sites are checked by colleges these days, the schools could find them, identify them (some of the tweets apparently also got posted to some of the kids' FB pages, and Holloway has those as well), and decide not to admit them. The same kinds of checks are also done by potential employers these days, Angel. It's not illegal to do so. Ethical? Not sure - it's a gray area. But neither a college nor an employer has to inform a rejected applicant the reason for rejection. The applicant would never know. FWIW, I am defending Holloway. I think turnabout is fair play. If the kids were dumb enough to 1) break into the property, 2) destroy it and 3) tweet about it, then they get whatever is coming to them.

If my child survived the can of whoop-ass her father and I opened on her she would absolutely be there to help clean. Then I would sit down with Swamp and Joss. At least one parent held his kid accountable. And these idiot helicopter parents are all worried that their little darlings' chances of getting into college might be ruined on account of Holloway's posting? Good. If I had pulled a stunt like that, I might be washing floors at the college of my choice - after my dad knocked me into next year. I disagree with this. If I really thought that my kid's chance of getting into college would be ruined by a stupid stunt like this I would be fighting and doing what it took to protect them from that.

How is it Holloway's fault the kids were dumb enough to post the pictures? He obtained them from THEIR Twitter accounts/facebook pages.
Ow ow ow, my brain hurts trying to follow these parents' logic.

For me, that would take it from "teenagers do stupid things" to "maybe it's time to send the little bastard to military school." My kid would be cleaning up either way, but there's a big difference between partying in a vacant house and stealing from a vacant house.

He gave these kids the perfect opportunity to rehab the image of themselves they had already destroyed when they posted this stuff the 1st time. They could have shown up and at least played the contrite part (plenty of kids and adults do that well) and gotten lots of "good kid" points and been fine. Their parents are as dumb as they are.

It's not Holloway's fault. The parents are just pissed that their kids got caught, and apparently think that what they did is just not a big enough deal compared to what the kids might face in terms of prosecution, shame, embarrassment and rejection.

I understand parents wanting to protect their kids from getting a scarlet letter for something stupid they did.

We're talking destructive and damned proud of it - enough so that they posted it for the electronic world to see. As CL said, they had the opportunity to come forward when the story got out. They didn't and haven't.

If it were my kid and I suspected that college would find his name linked to this on a Google search, then my earlier answer would still be the same (he'd be scrubbing that house until it was clean), but I'd also counsel him to write about the whole thing in his essay. Writing about owning up to and attempting to make amends for something like this may or may not get him into college, but it would be better than the college discovering it on their own.

If you want to protect them from their own stupidity you then teach them what you hope they haven't already learned: apologize and make yourself look better whether you mean it or not. It'll make your life easier. (ie: you'll get into your college even though you're a moron) The parents should know this by now, since everyone ends up saying they're sorry for something they don't think they should be sorry for in their lifetime. That makes them dumber than their kids now that I think about it.

The guy had the decency to not pursue legal action, which he has every right to do. The smart thing to do would be slink away and keep your head down along with your kid's. Take everything down that you can and cross your fingers.
These parents wouldn't have a leg to stand on if he pressed charges and have a record would do even more damage than facebook pages or twitter feeds.
Recognize your kid got a break and stop being even more of an assclown than you already are.

I'm still not following the logic. If the schools are checking social media, then they would have found it anyway on the kids own posts. The kids put the info out there, not Holloway. And as far as protecting kids, this won't keep them out of every college or hold them back forever. But, maybe 2 years at a CC would give the kids time for the lesson to sink in. I would think a misdemeanor or felony on your record would hold you back far more - the parents should be thankful Holloway isn't doing more with the pictures. Or they could have drug their kids to the cleanup and the kids would have a great college essay to write - "How I made a huge mistake, And what I did to make it right". Shows a lot more character than - "How I made a huge mistake and my parents spent a fortune to hide it"

Devil's advocate: Unless some of the pictures include the party goer actually doing the damage, then is there actual proof? Could the parents win the case in that regard?

Regardless, they are still trespassing which is illegal. I am guessing most party-goers did no damage, doesn't mean they weren't breaking the law by attending.
