Is this a new trend in FL or what? www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/Deputies-Shot-and-Wound-Unarmed-Man-in-His-Driveway-217496941.html Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said Monday that the deputies responded to a 911 call about a possible burglary early Saturday and found 60-year-old Roy Middleton searching through the car. The deputies reported they told Middleton to show his hands multiple times, but he lunged out of the car and spun toward them. Morgan said the deputies feared for their safety and opened fire Even GZ had a better story than that. At least he will live to sue.

What can I say? Don't lunge out of cars and spin towards the men with guns.

Somebody must have gotten a speeding ticket in Florida one time! Or maybe several times!

What can I say? Don't lunge out of cars and spin towards the men with guns. Are you serious? Are you saying the deadly force policy for police should be reduced to general fear? Lunging senior citizens? Are you one of those that backed the LAPD when they shot up the wrong car because 'it matched the description' when they were looking for the ex cop? I think you are just sitting up there waiting for us to shoot each other so you can take over. Never mind he was on his own property and not committing a crime. I am sure they will find a way to justify the shooting though and will pay him off. Just found it odd- another 'suspected burglar' shot in FL minding his own business- at least the cops only winged him.

I'm not saying it's right.
I take police brutality seriously. If you'll recall, I was the one suggesting negligent homicide charges for police a few months ago in that case where the police killed a man by forcing him to lie on his stomach.
I just don't know what you want us to say in this case. The US is a police state and getting to be more so by the day. Do you want the officers charged with assault? Do you want their guns taken away? Tazers and less-than-lethal only?
Make your case for what should happen, prove to us that whatever action was taken against the officers involved wasn't as severe as your suggestion, and you might get a discussion going.

When people are pointing guns at you and repeatedly telling you to show them your hands, you don't reach into the car like you're grabbing something and then turn on them quickly. They'll assume you're going for a weapon every single time. The guy may have been a senior citizen, but 60 is a far cry from an old senile 90 year old, and the vast majority of sixty somethings are still plenty capable of using a firearm.

To add on to what Dark said, if it was really early it still could have been dark and harder for the police to see that a) it was an older person (but older doesn't necessarily mean he's less of a threat to cops) and b) they didn't have anything in their hands when the whipped around.
BTW - There's no picture of the guy. Both my parents are 60 and people regularly guess their age at least 10 years younger than they are. I've gone to my mom's work before and their eyes about bug out when they find out I'm her 27 year old daughter. One actually said "You must of had her when you were a teen".

I guess some people think the police should wait for a "muzzle flash," further analyze the situation, ask themselves if the guy really meant harm and determine if he was a good or bad shot based on how close they came to getting hit and do all this before taking action. Yep, that'll work. Follow that stupid path and we'd have a severe shortage of law enforcement personnel - wait, maybe that's WHY they think that way?

Pierce Brosnan is in his 60s, he still looks pretty spry to me. Jeff Goldblum is in his 60s, he still looks capable of handling a firearm. Gary Busey is almost 70, and the last time I saw his mug shot he still looks plenty deranged and dangerous.

DF will be 60 next year. I'm not far behind. Both of us are capable of inflicting death on others with no problem. I work out 3x a week on a trampoline. 60 is the new 40 and we are trying to live that way!

I guess his most recent picture. The only other picture is one of him on his hospital bed. Florida deputies fire 17 shots at unarmed man at his home

How many officers were there? Even with three, that's six apiece. Seems... excessive.

17 shots and they hit him once in the leg I shouldn't laugh, but... man. That Simpsons episode where Wiggum is trying to shoot the alligator just popped into my head. Maybe he was 100 yards away or something.

While I agree you should immediately come out of the car when you hear the police asking you, is it possible the guy has bad hearing or didn't really hear him until he came out? I have two friends that are deaf or close to in one ear. One is 50-55 and the other is over 60. I could see them spinning out of the car because they finally heard the cop. My guess is a neighbor called because she didn't see who got into the car and the guy could have been killed for it.

What would you have done if u were the police in that case?

It's more common than you think. That's why I get a kick out of posts from people who carry and talk about putting two in the chest and one in the head if they're ever attacked or whatever. That might work when you're calm and focused shooting at paper targets at the range. Veteran combat soldiers can't do it in combat, and police are notoriously horrible shots when they're forced to shoot suspects. Adrenaline, fear, moving targets, moving shooters, bad light, the speed that something like that happens, it's kind of amazing they hit anything at all.

He's gotten skinny as he's aged, but he's still pretty cut for 70.

Hey, I can admire another man's physique without wanting to jump his bones. It's like women who can admire another woman's rack, in a purely professional platonic way.
