We get it, you don't like this law. The people of Florida do. It came before the legislature for review and changes couldn't muster enough support for a vote. I guess that the people want to protect children under the age of 15 from adults that would take them into a bathroom and criminally sexually assault them. That's their right. The Founders of this nation set it up so States have latitude in how they govern and if people don't like the laws in one state they can find another. Many of us like this system just fine. Moving one state over is called voting with your feet and is every Americans right. There is no lawlessness or anarchy. No matter how much you stomp your feet and shout that this ain't right, the girl knowingly committed multiple crimes and will answer for them. 

Since you seem so interested, when I was in high school the girls I dated were all in my class, or the class ahead of me. I never had a problem with any girls parents so there was no need to sneak. For the record, in all my 52 years, I never put my hands on any girl under 16 years of age. Got it?

As for the mother, she enabled this crime from the get go, sheltering a runaway for criminal purposes. She had illegal contact with the victim, hindered prosecution, and encouraged the destruction of evidence. She also slandered the family of the victim mercilessly. She and Kate need a serious tune-up and I hope they wind up in matching orange jump suits.

I get that there are some people that don't like the law.  As a father- I'm frankly not thrilled about the 16 age of consent.  But the law is the law- and maximum sentences had this kind of offender in mind.  I think jkapp covered it pretty well.

Not where I come from- it isn't molestation here- in fact in most states no laws were broken.  I don't consider consensual sex between HS kids molestation. 

Now if you want to talk real FL child molestation- let's talk Zimmerman   It's ok I guess for him though since he's a hero.


But for reality- you have no clue how sentencing works I can assure you.  She would never get the maximum under the circumstances.  Not even close.

Explain it to me then Google- is molestation legal in FL then?  It is according to that.  At some point there has to be a general rule- and that is the one I use- not FL's and not yours- not some online definition.  Common sense.

When that law results in situations like this- then it is a bad law.  Good intentions maybe.  I only mentioned Zimmerman in the context of what actual child moelstation looks like (and to take a another shot at him because I wanted to).  If you read at all what his victim told police you would know what I was talking about.

It is real simple to me- these laws were not designed to ruin the lives of HS kids that have sex.  I am sure on that other thread you are perfectly fine with locking up the teenagers that murdered that jogger- as adults- but on this thread you are going to say the younger girl can't consent to sex.  You can't have it both ways- either the teens are capable of making their own decisions or not- FL has no damn business getting involved.  I suppose everyone has their line in the sand and hang-ups about teen sex- well I am fine with the 4 year rule- that keeps the relationship police out of high school.

People can keep repeating adult all day- in the end they are just barely over 3 years in age difference- it is not molestation in any sense.

It didn't have to be a case of ruining anyone's life. She could have taken the plea deal. The law is what it is. This young innocent 18 year old is back in jail for disobeying a court order. This was a case of somebody thinking that they could play the "alternative life style" card and get away with breaking the law. She is finding out that she can't. As far as the 14 year old and your comparison with the two murderers in Ok, as far as I know, she has not been accused of any crime. There is no comparison between the people or the acts committed by them in these two circumstances. Four years may not seem like much, but in high school it is a huge difference. I didn't call it molestation, but I do believe that the older girl had an overwhelming influence on the younger one and was able to manipulate the situation.

At least you agree it isn't molestation- she broke the law and will get punished for it- and apparently I am the lone opinion that the law is bad.  Terms like sexual predator, pedophile, child molester actually mean specific things and the people on here using those terms need to do their homework.

It does appear that you are. I think that the law is necessary as is the discretion that prosecutors have in filing charges on a case by case basis.
