DEAR ABBY: Today I saw a former classmate I hadn't seen in 22 years. He always seemed a little slow and different from the rest of us, and he was picked on at school because of it. When I said hello to him and reminded him of my name and that we went to school together, he said, "You danced with me at prom, and I always thought that was so nice!" I had forgotten that I had danced with him, but obviously, the fact that I did meant something to him. My parents raised me to be nice to everyone, even if they weren't in my circle of friends. I'm not claiming that I was a saint in school, but I did try to stand up for people who were being picked on.
I wanted to share with your readers that any act of kindness probably means more than you know to the other person. I will be sharing my parents' message of kindness with my own daughter, and I hope other parents read this and do the same. -- PASSING IT ON IN OHIO
DEAR PASSING IT ON: Thank you for a wonderful letter. Your lesson in compassion is one that all parents should discuss with their children.
This brought back memories for me. When I was a senior in high school (late 70s, yes ARCHIE I am old), I took a friend to the prom. He was alot older, divorced and was a nice guy. The prom was at the school, we had a DJ (I think we had a DJ and not a band-saved money), finger foods and soft drinks. There were a few girls there who were without dates. Wallflowers and nerds. After we had been there about an hour, my date said to me "I'm going to go ask that girl to dance. Is that OK"? I said 'sure'. So I got a drink and sat down. When he walked over and asked her to dance, her face lit up. This guy was good looking and looked even better dressed in a tux. I am sure it made her night. I had not thought about that in years, this letter in Dear Abby today brought back memories, especially since it is prom season.
Do any of you have any stories?

Well, that settles it. If Tloonya or Doxie commented on my thread, I have hit a home run!

In 1971(?) I was working the front desk of an airport hotel when two of my former high school classmates checked in. It was their wedding night and they were flying out the following morning to leave on their honeymoon. I knew them casually from being in classes with one or the other in high school.
Because I knew them, I bought them a bottle of champagne and had it sent to their hotel room with my congratulations.
Flash forward 28 years to our 30th high school reunion, the first reunion I went to, when the couple came up to me and asked me if I remembered them. I did. They told me they never got the chance to thank me for the bottle of champagne I had bought for them on their wedding night. I had forgotten about it but they never did.
It's the little things we sometimes remember the most.

Well, that settles it. If Tloonya or Doxie commented on my thread, I have hit a home run! Why is the name of that lazy bum is next to mine? Are you out of your mind, sappypooper? And...O>M>G! Bottle of shampagne = act of kindness? Sober up people! It is a nice gesture at most!!! Random act of kindness is when somebody randomly does something kind to others! Like calling calling card company because someone's card isn't working and spending 40min on the phone with stupid customer service to find out that this was an OLD card she had used up and a new one is at her home! Or running to Wal Mart for formula for a stupid mother of a poor child who is hungry... So...you got it?

I can't get past the part where your parents let you go to prom with a guy who was "alot older and divorced".

I can't get past why a guy who was older and divorced would want to go to a HS prom....... I can, and it explains why he'd want to be dancing with a bunch of unpopular girls. Easy pickins.

(Don't be scared, I took my meds today.) Does anyone think that old divorcee was the only choice for happy(?)scooter? Because I don't usually see good looking people taking old divorcees to the prom AND calling others 'fly on the wall' and 'nerds'... Also older divorcee could had been a some sort of person who would actually be happy to attend a party where bunch of 18y/olds are hanginh out. Bit drunk.

I was at an outdoor concert in 1996. I noticed an elderly man shuffling along on a cane in the distance. It broke and he came down hard on top of it. But immediately I saw a group of heavy-set bikers run over to him and help him to his feet. The biggest man patiently walked the senior to his car.
Right next to me, a woman commented, "What a thoughtful gesture." I noticed she was part of a group of six.
I was about to say "You don't see that every day." but I was preempted by another woman in the group saying, "THAT'S NOT THOUGHTFUL! ARE YOU CRAZY? YOU'RE A CRAZY PERSON. ONLY STUPID, CRAZY PEOPLE THINK THAT'S THOUGHTFUL. THEY NEED TO BUY HIM A SODA TOO, DUHHHH! I DON'T LIKE THE LOOK OF THE BIG ONE! I HAVE TO GO TAKE A LEAK!"
Several outdoor port-a-potties were set up not ten feet away, and the enraged woman stormed off to the closest one to relieve herself.
It was then that I noticed the sliding latch on the door to the port-a-potty was cracked and could be broken off. I don't know how I built up the courage to do it, but I found myself running over to port-a-potty, grabbing the latch, and shearing it off. The door was now permanently locked.
From inside, I could hear muffled screeching, "HELLO!? THIS STUPID CRAPPER IS BROKE! YOU STUPID PEOPLE GET ME SOME HELP!"
The screeching faded quickly as I turned and walked into the distance.
Suddenly I felt a hand on my back and I turned to face an older-looking woman. She was part of the group I'd seen before and the rest of the group was with her, all of them smiling, tears of joy in their eyes.
"Thank you," the woman said. "Thank you so much. You'll never know how much you've done for us." I just held her hand for a while and smiled. I didn't know what else to say.

I was at a picnic decades ago and an old man was sitting on the ground under a tree. He couldn't seem to get himself up and nobody had yet offered to help him. After only a couple of minutes, a group of about six gang-banger looking thugs approached him and as I headed in that direction all I could think of was how I might have to get involved (yeah, they looked that dangerous).
Well, shame on me for jumping to conclusions. These "punks" went over to him and helped him up. They even brushed off his back and asked if there was anything else they could do to help.
I guess some would say that was no big deal but it has stuck with me for years and has reinforced a continuing reminder not to judge others based on how they look.

I guess I'm the only one that is amazed at this lady. Sure it was a nice thing to do, and yes, he remembered it years later - but she makes it sound like it was a turning point in his life and because of her he is a better person. And then she goes on a rant about how superior she is because she was so nice to the sub-par humans that needed her. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/sick.png)

I read Dear Abby this morning and my first thought was "oh, how nice of you to stoop to talk to one of the peasants."

I'm sure happy meant to tell us a couple of feel good stories, and we just smacked the life out of both of them.

I'm happy about people being nice to one another. I don't want to hear why someone is a superior person because they were nice to a nerd in HS>

The author was shocked that her friend remembered a kind overture decades after the fact. He didn't remember her name or anything else about her, but he remembered that she'd been the one who'd danced with him at the prom. That gesture touched him and stuck with him. She concludes with her point: "I wanted to share with your readers that any act of kindness probably means more than you know to the other person. I will be sharing my parents' message of kindness with my own daughter, and I hope other parents read this and do the same." Your synopsis is cynical garbage. So is Ms. Loony's, and I should have just said so rather than written a parody. happyscooter and Tennesseer: Good for you. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/thumbsup.png) Heaven knows no good deed goes unmocked on NMSNM.
