Today's been pretty rough. Without going into the long, boring list of things that aren't going well, suffice it to say it's one of "Those" days. Sometimes I comfort myself by thinking about how things could be worse and so far, the best I could come up with was that at least I don't have lice. (Don't ask - my poor sister and her family are in lice hell right now.) So, when things aren't going well, do you have any things you tell yourself that make you feel better? EDITED TO ADD: None of this stuff is truly horrible or life shattering. It's nothing super serious and nothing I can't handle, just a lot of unpleasant and inconvenient things happening at once. In no way would I ever say that this little blip on the radar of my life is in any way comparable to what's going on in Boston.

Yeah I'm in a much better place now than the last time when shit happened. You'll get through it, you always do.

I turn my mp3 player to Stronger by Kelly Clarkson and sing at the top of my lungs "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger". I think it was the only way I made it through February (it was a really rough month).

"Nothing lasts forever". Gets me through the bad times and makes me commit the good ones to memory.

I usually say something dumb to myself like "Tomorrow is another day." Or "Others have it way worse." It never works. I still feel crappy so I just ride it out and hope I don't make too many other people miserable on the trip.

You could think about people who were blown to bits at the Boston Marathon... might make your problems seem a little less important. Just a thought...
Thyme beat me to it...

Nobody's dead.
ETA: I see what I tell myself came after a marathon bombing comment. I mean that I tell myself that nobody in my immediate family is dead.

I do that too. There is nothing worse than a toddler with head lice.

Yesterday was one of those not so great days for me. The best I could come up with is I didn't have to cook dinner when I got home. I had leftovers in the fridge and I'd already eaten. Oh and I was spared 4 vaccinations pre-travel because of my allergies.
I'm stuck in a knee brace on one side and an ankle boot on the other so maybe you can add that you can walk easily to your list?

I think about how far I've come. How overwhelming things seemed when I was a kid and how much more power I have now over my thoughts, actions and circumstances. Hope things turn brighter for you.

Yeah, I usually try to think of people who have it worse. Lice works, ick, so hard to get rid of...

There are a lot of things worse than a toddler with head lice. True but DQ's toddler has a ridiculous amount of hair.

I'm sorry you are having a bad day. This is really terrible, but I watch trash tv to make myself feel better..Or Supernanny, when that was on. And, then I generally become thankful for who I am and the family I have. (And, ok, I'm Mrs. Judgy Mc Judge too...)

I'm part of an online journaling site and have many friends there. Sometimes when things are difficult, I read through some old entries written by one of my "[journal site] buddies" during a rough times in his/her life. It helps me keep perspective... and I admit, sometimes there's more than a little "oh God, at least I'm not going through that" element to my reading Actually, I'm doing that right now to put my job search in perspective and remind myself to not stress out too much.

I think about the fact that whatever I am going through is still not as bad as what others are going through, and pour myself a nice big glass (bottle) of wine. Sorry you are having a crappy day, hope it gets better.

I should probably edit the OP to clarify - none of the problems in my life right now are that serious, just frustrating, hurtful and time-consuming. Nothing earth shattering, nothing horrible, nothing other than bad things piling up and causing a mess.
So comparing any of the blips in my life to the people who were killed or injured in the bombing would be so completely inappropriate, I wouldn't even start to go there. No need to comfort myself that I wasn't blown up because that's not in the same galaxy of issues I'm talking about.
Plus, at the risk of trying to make a little bit of a joke at myself, I don't really worry too often about being blown up, but I worry ALL THE TIME about getting lice so I'm trying to stick to comforting myself about the things I actually worry about.

By the way, it's okay if the "other people have it so much worse" thing isn't working for you. Yeah, your problems are probably not as big as the ones of people who lost a loved one yesterday or a kid in the Newtown shooting, but that doesn't make them insignificant either.
It's fine if thinking of people worse off does help you, but I don't appreciate having my problems belittled in this manner by other people when I'm going through something. Sometimes things *really do suck* and thinking of what else could go wrong is very unhelpful at best, bordering on cruel at worst.
So if you need to acknowledge to yourself that things are pretty awful for you right now, do that. Don't feel pressure to minimize your issues just because some people in the world have it worse. There are always people who have it worse. That doesn't make yours meaningless.

I read stories about people who killed themselves and think "Their problems had solutions." And then I think "My problems have solutions." Uh, maybe I should further clarify my OP to read that I'm also not considering killing myself. Are you having a rough day, Thyme or have I just really missed the mark in trying to describe something that is frustrating but still has bits of humor in it?

When I'm feeling a bit down, I put on some makeup, then look in the mirror and say "Would you f*&k me? I'd f*&ck me. I'd f*&ck me so hard." Then I do the tuck.

I'm not comparing my problems to others and not comforting myself that others have it worse. Even my comforting myself is selfish because I'm not really thinking so much about my sister as thinking it's nice that my family and I don't have head lice. All I'm trying to say - and think I said, but I'll go back and look - is that things kinda suck but I'm glad they don't have the added suckage of having head lice...

Sometimes when I'm having one of those days, I just stop trying to accomplish anything. Ie. yep, today I'm going to suck in the mom department, school isn't going to get done and ever check I write out is going to have to be voided because of some error (substitute whatever)... So if its all going to go wrong anyway, I'm shredding my list for today and we're taking ice cream cones to the lake/ popping holy grail in the DVD player/ having unlimited video games while I take a bath and read... (Substitute whatever)....

You don't have to see the humor but at least you could back off the idea that I'm belittling the events in Boston because I'm happy I don't have lice and that thought comforts me.
It was a self centered post about self centered ways of comforting oneself. Nothing more.
Boston was awful. And we can still talk about other things.
