BTW, down another pound on the scale today. I know it's got to a fluke, slight dehydration or something. But down is down!
Also, I found a pair of dress pants in size 14 in my closet - from a brand not known for its "glamour" sizing. I can zip and button them! I wasn't itching to wear them around all day yet, but zipping and buttoning is progress!

Nice job, guys. I didn't go to the gym today but will be back on the elliptical tomorrow morning. Good thing, too; DH is making his famous linguini and clams tomorrow night. Insanely good, but not exactly a health food

I have a bachelorette party on Saturday night - super fancy restaurant, lots of drinks after, the whole 9 yards. I should probably swim on Saturday... And on Sunday, friends have invited us over for pizza. And I know I won't be swimming with a hangover on Sunday...

Life is about balance. I know DH is a great cook & we also like to eat out (and living in NYC we could eat out somewhere different every night for, oh, forever), so that's my motivation for exercising. I'm not going to subsist on bunny food, so I have to do something to burn calories.
Oh, and congrats on the button/zip victory!

45 minutes on the elliptical this morning. Also stood on the scale, which I said I wasn't going to do - still only down 4 lbs.
Next goal: we get back from a short vac to AZ on Tuesday, I *will* go to the 6:45am spinning class Wed.

I've gone up a few pounds, nothing bad but I need to get back into this in the New Year. I'm 120 lbs now, I'm having Thyroid issues, but I'm getting that seen to.
So I hope everyone will go forward into 2014 with me. I'm primed to do something for myself in 2014.

I have a 5K I want to do in the spring and a couple of more runs I want to do next year, but one of my male "acquaintances" has invited himself along and I don't want him there. Everything is a competition with him, he is even mad because I am losing weight and have Mr. Bear in my life (the jerk dumped me). I wonder if there is a sport for competitive broom riding.....

I will be going into 2014 with you, Sugilite.
Last weekend I did a 15K (9.3 mile) walk, today was a 7+ mile walk, and there will be shorter walks on a few days this week. Next Sunday is the half marathon. Remember, I am walking it, so other than a really long walk (which I am ready for), it is an accomplishment but not an exceptional one.
After that I will have friends in town, staying with me. And after that, the diet starts. I hope to lose a little weight before January, when WW starts a new program. No counting points; it's about eating the right foods and using the extra points each day instead of saving them up for the week. I don't know if this is just for the first few weeks or the whole program. Anyway, I'm interested!
MizBear, just tell that guy who wants to tag along that you are not a person who exercises well with others, and you like to do races by yourself but you're sure there are other races he can do and find other people to do them with.

Minnesotagirl7: 42.2 lbs 10/29/13 (45 lbs 10/23/13)
Only down 0.6 lbs this week. I'm disappointed. But I also think I need to adjust my expectations. I've been doing everything "right" the last two weeks, and I've only lost 2 lbs. I was expecting to lose ~2 lbs each week. So I think I'm going to focus on the fact that I'm losing each week, and that overall I'm feeling great. The loss will come with time. Hope you guys are all doing well. I'm off to the gym again after work. And my work just finished a new walking path. Its 0.9 miles, which will be perfect for a lap or two at lunch!

Nice job, Minnesota. Also, if you are working out a lot, you won't necessarily be losing, but your shape may be changing as you build muscle. (Ask me how I know.) So I worked out 4 days last week, lost 1 pound. Haven't worked out this week (sorry sarcastic ) and am consistently down 2 pounds. I am well and truly under 200 now, there's no way it's a fluke anymore, which is awesome. I do feel like I'm losing the benefit of the weight training though - my back, which was doing much better, has been crap all week. I need to get back to doing that a couple nights/days per week. That said, I don't think morning training is for me. It's just too hard to get out of bed, and then I drag all day because of the early wakeup. I'm going to attempt to workout in the morning tomorrow and friday to "finish" the 2-week challenge, but working out in the morning just doesn't work with my biorythyms, I think. Disappointing.

BSB- i haven't been doing my morning workouts either this week. DH is out of town so I have dog duty in the morning with him gone. I have been walking a mile in the morning with the dog, but nothing beyond that. So i've been doing something... but getting up an hour early to do a workout AND to take the dog out just isn't happening lol
and i agree- although i already sorta knew it. morning workouts aren't for me. I don't feel better during the day or energized or anything like that.

I'm reviving this thread, dammit! This year is not over, and there is still a lot of getting fit that can be done! I'm down to 195 as of this morning. Did circuit training Monday and 1/2 hour swim yesterday. Was proud of myself for the swim - pushed myself HARD for about half of it and really increased my speed and intensity. Which is definitely what I need given that I've been able to swim a mile straight without getting out of breath for a couple of weeks now. Unfortunately I seem to have lost the log of measurements, so I still don't know how much inches I'm losing. But I definitely look thinner, and am consistently wearing size 14 clothes though they are still a bit tight. I even went shopping in the storage containers I had downstairs and was able to pull out some clothes I haven't been able to wear in 1-2 years. If I can get down to a size 12 pants, I will have about 45% of my work and cute social wardrobe back. If I can get down to a 10 I get the other 45%. (Current wardrobe is prob 10%, for anyone keeping track of the math.) Come on ladies, let's finish 2013 strong!!

Thanks BSB- had forgotten about the thread.
I have a longtime BFF that lives in the UK. she's lost nearly 40 pounds and she's in chicago visiting now. She has inspired me! I have been working hard to really get nutrition under control and get back to eating mostly primal. I've been better- today we're having a pot luck all day and I don't even want the donuts or the sugary stuff. I had a small sliver of coffee cake (about 3 bites) and that was plenty. My cravings for unhealthy stuff is diminishing- which is so helpful!
The one issue I'm having is energy levels. It is that time of year where I am dragging. I am taking vitamin D daily and using my sun therapy lamp but i'm still having a hard time (and still craving carbs- though i haven't been giving in!) I'm hoping that after a few weeks of high protein/lower carb eating that my energy levels will be up.
my goals for the end of 2013 are to be eating about 80-90% primal and feeling better. keep my step count up above 10K even though it's winter (this one is hard!) and hopefully be nearly out of a size 16 and into a 14.

Going primal can totally tank your energy levels as your blood sugar adapts. I still eat pretty low-carb right now, but I've abandoned primal because it just wasn't working for me. We have wheat products only a couple times on weekends, some bread, crackers with cheese, pasta, whatever. But I do have dairy daily, eat almonds or nuts daily, and usually have a handful of m&ms or some sugar product. Watching my calories carefully and am making it work. We have all the ingredients in the fridge for white chicken chili - hoping to make it tonight as I am so bored of brocolli and chicken breasts, lol! At least this will be different veggies!

I did primal before and it worked amazingly and it actually stabilized my blood sugar levels. I never got that "hangry" feeling. The first 2 weeks are always the roughest but once I've adapted I feel AMAZING and I totally miss that. and 80-90& means every now and then I have some bread or a serving of pasta- just not very often. and it doesn't really matter because I generally won't crave them at all. I will however be jonesing for a turkey burger patty topped with a fried egg and some smoked gouda and possibly a slice of bacon lol the only reason I stopped life got in the way and since primal is a bit more prep intensive, that was the first thing to go.

Yep - my post wasn't clear but I was totally agreeing that the first 2 weeks are hard but then it gets better. And I'm with you on the prep. We cook like once a week and that's what we eat for the week. It sucks but it helps keep us on track diet-wise and time-wise you can't beat it.

But not dinners. DH won't eat warmed over meat DH either has sandwiches or i make a veggie lasagna or something like that for his lunch for the week. And I make something different for me (veggie soup with ground turkey this week) but I cook dinner every night.

Hi folks,
Checking back in to see how you are all doing. Congratulations to those who are sticking with the exercise -- and especially to those who are seeing results on the scale.
I did my half marathon walk last weekend. I completed it 7 minutes sooner than last year, which is a good victory for me. I was definitely more trained this year than last. I was sore afterward, and my legs were kind of rubbery the next day. But the biggest problem is that I am retaining fluid from all the sodium-laden foods and drinks I had before and after the race in order to keep the leg cramps at bay. I stepped on the scale and found myself within 1.5 pounds of my all-time heaviest weight! Ugh. I knew I was putting on weight from all the eating, but I am hoping that a few pounds of this are water weight and will leave quickly. We've had birthdays at work too, and the eating there is fun, but no fun, if you catch my drift.
The diet starts this Saturday. I'm off next week, and even though it's Thanksgiving I can still focus on the meat and non-starchy veggies and limit my intake of the other stuff.
I am taking time off from heavy exercising but may go to the gym for a light workout this weekend.

Way to go, serious! Sorry to hear the pounds are back, but you'll get there. Your fitness is obviously getting better - I definitely couldn't walk a half marathon!
Not doing great this week, and had a full-out sugar binge lsat night. Craving was inexplicable and so strong! So I ended up eating a lot of leftover halloween candy. Oh well. Heading to my parents this weekend, and determined not to let them derail my diet. Also, that does mean hiking and swimming, so that's good. My plan: exercise Sat & Sun, and try to get in a quick circuit workout tonight. We'll see how it goes!
Hope everyone has an awesome weekend!

Sorry I've been AWOL, dealing with a lot of crap with the pain management clinic. They're latest brilliant idea is to stick a permanent electrical stimulator in my head to interrupt the pain signals to my brain. Um, no. I'm pretty sure that when I tell them that they're going to say they can't help me anymore (not that they've actually helped, all they've done is stupid tests that caused more pain). So, the gym has kind of fallen off my radar, which is just another thing to feel like a failure about.

For what it's worth, my pain dr says people have really amazing results with stimulators - (and I'm not a candidate for one, so he wasn't trying to talk me into anything, we were just having a conversation.) That said, I'm not sure letting people put something in my head would fly with me either. *hugs*

Thanks, bsb. The whole problem with my head is it already has extra crap in it because of the neuro condition I was born with, and my docs *think* that's what causes the pain. No way am I adding to that.

I am making it to the gym 5 or 6 days a week. Then DH and I are walking some days also. DH is developing a very defined gut, I do not like that-his clothes are NOT fitting, plus I think men who let their bellies hang over their waist line is gross. Sorry, but it's the truth.

I hit 'post' too soon. I have been going through menopause for over 4 years. (I thought 2 years was the max). I absolutely cannot lose the last few pounds. No matter what I do. I walk 5 miles a day and work with free weights 30 minutes a day. I eat a very small breakfast, sandwich or soup for lunch and a normal dinner. I do not eat candy, drink sodas, or eat between meals. Is anyone else having that problem?

Is anyone else having that problem? I'm not having this problem but am very familiar with it. Are you on HRT at all? Estrogen helps regulate fat deposits (thanks estrogen!) and has a strong role in our body being willing to give away our fat as well as keep it where it belongs. I think the good news is once your body adjusts after finishing menopause you can lose the weight if you try. My mom is finished with menopause and is the teeniest tiniest she's ever been in her life. She started losing the weight easily probably 5 years post-menopause. That's probably not very helpful, but there is a light at the very far end of the tunnel!
