Not sure if I am understanding what you are saying but when I want to quote part of a post I just highlight that part in the post, copy then paste to reply box then high light it again and hit quote button on reply bar. Maybe I am doing it the long way around but works for me.
What used to happen is that the "insert quote here" notification showed up inside a quote box. It was then easy to see if what I posted in addition to that was going to be inside or outside the box. It got so bad that I would type my response first, space it down, and then insert the quote at the top. And again, when I hit Create Post the quoted portion does show up in a box. It just doesn't show while I am typing it. And yes, you are doing it the long way.

Curious about this: If I hit the Quote bubble in the reply bar (rather than the Quote button to quote an entire post) I get the "insert quote here" notification but there is no box. It will show up in a box when it posts, but before then it is a guess whether anything I post in addition to that will be inside or outside of the quote box. Or what also happens sometimes in trying to properly format my post, I end up with an empty quote box, the part I was trying to quote after the box, and my own addition after that. I have to go back and edit, doing a cut-and-paste to put the intended quote back into the box. Does this happen for anyone else? It doesnt show up like in this screenshot, with the code like mine? I am on a tablet, and I used the quote button in the bar above quick reply, not the full reply button. ** edit to add that it does the same thing for me if I use the full reply.

But I'll stick to the long way since it always works!!!

Edit: And as you can see, my response ended up inside the quote box.

Mine doesn't have a box either until I post. It only has the code [*quote] [*/quote] (minus the *) and you paste the text in between the start and end of that. that's how it's supposed to be. ** edit to add that my posting default is bbcode vs visual, so if yours isn't, maybe that's why I see things differently. If you use visual, have you tried switching to the bbcode tab so you can see the code?

Yeah, I did that here, and I do have the quote and /quote (in brackets) as a guide. I can default to that if necessary, but I would hope there aren't a lot of other effects from doing so. Maybe I'll only switch to that if I want to do that kind of partial quote.

Ok, so it seems to be the same for all themes when using the "visual" view, and it's specific to our forum, as I went to another one and tested. It was there. So, next question is, when did you first notice it? Virgil Showlion tinkered with smiley stuff because PB smiley links were broken, though I can't imagine that that would affect this. But, maybe Virgil has an idea before I go ask on the support forum.

I have to go back and edit, doing a cut-and-paste to put the intended quote back into the box. Does this happen for anyone else? This is a symptom of the way IE/Edge handles editable elements. You'll notice in BBCode mode that IE users' posts are full of [p][/p] elements. This is the mechanism IE uses to insert lines when the user hits Enter. Unfortunately, using paragraph tags as hard line breaks causes problems in the editor, especially with quote boxes, and especially when trying to edit IE users' quotes with non-IE browsers. Your only recourse is: - Use BBCode mode to proof posts and ensure tags are wrapping the right content. BBCode mode is also generally the only mode you'll want to do cuts/pastes containing one or more full paragraphs.
- Hold down Shift when hitting Enter while manipulating other users' quotes. This forces all browsers, including IE/Edge, to insert a hard break rather than a new paragraph. This will usually help in cases where hitting Enter does nothing or when hitting Enter inserts new lines in the wrong place (i.e. not at the caret position).
- When inserting a new empty quote (or tag, more generally) in Visual mode, do the following:
- type xxx
- select the first two x's and hit "Quote"; they should appear inside the quote box and the third x should appear after it
- when pasting content into the quote box, position the caret between the two x's, paste, then eliminate the x's
- when adding content after the quote box, position the caret after the third x, insert the content, then eliminate the x
These few steps should help ensure content stays properly inside and outside of the tags.

Virgil, I am using chrome on an android tablet and see it correctly on Icey's forum but not here. Interesting. On the one that shows correctly, the choices are Preview and BBCode. On the one that shows incorrectly, the choices are Visual and BBCode. In my profile settings, I have Preview and BBCode. There is nothing in my preferences page that says Visual at all. Is that relevant to the issue?

No, I think somewhere along the lines we just changed the word. Otherwise they are the same. Preview/visual just shows the post as it will appear when posted (like any color or font customizations), while BBCode shows the modifications with all the code instead.

Virgil, I am using chrome on an android tablet and see it correctly on Icey's forum but not here. Does your tablet have access to developer tools like "Inspect Element"? Can you check what the in-editor DOM looks like for our board? What element is the placeholder text wrapped in, what styles are applied, etc.? If you understand what I'm saying, the above would be useful in diagnosing the issue. It seems to me that the placeholder is being properly wrapped but that something may be suppressing the proper styling.

WOW I'm on IE and I guess I'm doing everything wrong But I'll read thru this again just to be sure. And I thought I was doing it the long way.

Virgil Showlion - It may be possible, but not natively. ** Edit - after a little research, I found "Now you can debug mobile web sites with the full suite of Chrome Developer Tools running on a desktop browser that's connected to your phone via USB."
I can check on my laptop when I get home and see if I experience the same thing. If so, I'll run the debug from there. tallguy - how do you connect? PC or some sort of mobile device? And what browser do you use.

Desktop PC. Almost always on Chrome but sometimes on IE. If I recall correctly, I had the problem with Chrome originally. I used IE for a while and it was fine. Noticed the problem was gone so went back to Chrome, and now I have the problem on both. It seems to be on our end here, since you were able to reproduce it on this board and it seems fine on the other one.

There is more than one way to quote part of a post. If the way you do it works for you, there's no reason to change. Virgil was simply proposing a workaround for the way tallguy does it.

Thanks, tallguy. Helpful to know it's not limited to a specific type of connection (pc/ mobile) or just one browser.

Trust me I wasn't going to learn a new trick and I did realize that he was trying to do a workaround!! I rarely try to do much more than quote when on iPad anyway. Anything requiring serious stuff I do the old fashioned way - on my desktop -- old dogs and new tricks and all that. But I know where to come if I run into problem. This thread is always helpful.

Thanks, tallguy . Helpful to know it's not limited to a specific type of connection (pc/ mobile) or just one browser. If it helps, when I quote a post in its entirety and then hit the quote bubble to add a secondary quote it does show up correctly with the quote box for the second one.

this may or may not be a "bug" but I do have a question. I feel like someone else asked about this fairly recently, but I can't find the post.
why am I getting notifications about bookmarked threads, when I haven't bookmarked any? it's automatically being done for me, and then I get notes that so-and-so has posted in my bookmarked thread. how do I make that stop?

Chiver-Normally, if you do have bookmarks and to stop notification one would go to Profile and then Edit Profile. Once there, look for Notifications. Scroll down the list and see if Bookmark is checked. If checked, uncheck it. You say you have no bookmarks. For what thread were you sent a notification a bookmark of yours was updated?

I don't get those notifications when I'm using Tapatalk so it has to be on the PB side of the code. I'll take a look at this setting you mention when I'm back on my laptop later. thanks!

thanks, moon. that doesn't really answer the particular question I had, but it is somewhat helpful for other sides of it. personally, I sort by new topics and then go to "participated" so I don't see the need for bookmarks. they just clutter up whatever notifications I have. obv, that's just me, and everyone else's MMV. Tenn, that particular box was checked, so I unchecked it. we shall see if it makes a difference, I guess. thanks!

yeah, that's not working, at all. I have more bookmarks now than I did before.
