Oh, I'm also going to make chips by slicing a russet on my mandolin, laying the thin slices on a greased cookie sheet, brushing with melted butter and generously salting them - bake for 10 or 15 minutes. They are pretty good. I'm going to do the same with a sweet potato. I find all of Thanksgiving dinner rather mushy - so I'll be happy to have some crisp apples and some crunchy potato chips.

I made potatoes with leeks, bacon, and Parmesan cheese a couple of times this year and they're on the request list for our holiday party next month. It's actually a ravioli filling recipe, but is delicious as a potato dish using just the first part of the recipe: www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-live/potato-leek-and-bacon-ravioli-recipe/index.htmlI also made the brandies cranberry recipe that was posted a few weeks ago and they were delicious, so I'll probably make that again as well. If I'm roasting a turkey, I may use Alton brown's recipe again this year since the smell of it cooking last year was heavenly! I don't really like eating it, but everyone else seemed to enjoy it.

::Oh, and hoops--not sure if you're stuck on mashed potatoes, but if not, you can try roasting them too.::
Mashed potatoes are my domain. The wife roasts them though in a variety of ways.
Actually one of the best things we have is a joint venture. I make mashed potatoes, but very basic (no bacon, sour cream, chives, etc) and then she bakes them in the oven after. Delicious. Though they're usually really runny because I add too much milk and butter, and then her recipe calls for sour cream and cream cheese. I'm supposed to make them on the drier side so it doesn't happen, but I can't secretly admit that I like them really runny like that, so I just take the blame every time.
Excellent suggestions in this thread though. Gotta bookmark it so I can try some next time I make them.

I make a roasted root veggie dish, cut up beets, turnips, parsnips, carrots and onion. Sprinkle with sea salt, pepper and fresh rosemary, drizzle with olive oil and bake. Mmmmmm! My family loves this dish and always want me to add rutabaga, uhhh hell no! Take your stinky rutabaga and stick it They make a separate dish for that

No butter turkeys at the store I tried last night. And to DH for changing his mind on some of the recipes I thought he'd picked. Aww that sucks! I got one and it is on the sticky note list of things I have to pack up to take home this afternoon after work. And bad DH! He's not a girl, he doesn't get to change his mind like that

Everything is both mushy and covered in marshmallows or brown sugar. What happened that people came up with these crazy dishes? That is actually where my garlic carotts came from. I wanted a nice dish that wasn't mashed or drowned in sugar for Thanksgiving.

And he's NOT supposed to change his mind AFTER we've done the grocery shopping/cupboard check and thought we had everything.

But know that I think about it, everything is mushy. It's the holiday for the dentally challenged!!

And he damn well better find me a butter turkey. That will teach him to change his mind. Mr Sroo lives in fear of when I send him to the store for something specific or last minute. He tells the tale of the great heavy whipping cream quest of Thanksgiving of aught-eight I hate to shop at grocery stores the day before a holiday. <Beth shudders> Last Sunday before the Packer game was bad enough.

Yum! I make a roasted sweet potato that I love, but my mother's friend always comes and brings this weird mashed sweet potato thing - so I'm not allowed to bring a competing dish. My MIL serves regular ol' baked potatoes at her t-dinner, and I love it. Simple. She buys the super small potatoes, so you get a really nice portion.

I am laughing so hard I am crying Sroo. Part of me wants to rebel against the sweet potato casserole. First insult is I have to use canned sweet potatoes. Then I pile on the indignity even further by being required to use mini-marshmellows. What is wrong with people? I'd love to try Guy Fieri's recipe for roasted whiskey sweet potatos and apples but I know it would sit there uneaten at DH's family Thanksgiving and mine. Oh well, I can try it for myself. All I need is a little shot bottle of whiskey. I already have apples and sweet potatoes.

I guess we need to go shopping again. We had everything on Sunday. But my stupid old beagle managed to pull a bag of cornmeal off of the table and eat it! That dog will eat anything. So it's go to the store today or give up the cornbread stuffing.

At one time or another in his 14 years he's eaten 6 cream cheese croissants a pumpkin pie a loaf of bread package of gum chapstick a bag of homemade almond roca candy 1/2 of a Frisbee. etc And he's never been sick yet.

Mine ate a corn cob whole. Still trying to figure out how she managed to pass it. This was a couple years ago so if she hadn't, we'd know by now.

I had never seen a butter lamb or a butter turkey before I opened this thread. Learn something new every day. Me too! and now I WANT one. Are they available at regular grocery stores (like Kroger)? ...sorry if this has already been asked. I haven't read the entire thread and my ambien is kicking in so I'm running out of time.
