Male wrestlers don't wear much and I've never seen somebody have a wardrobe malfunction at a meet. But, in figure skating it's not important for the guy to show off his body, just the woman. if they did, it would certainly make the matches more interesting.

The outfits don't leave a whole lot to the imagination even when they stay on.

Because being a total asshole, all the time, to every person that comes in your store, will only get you so far. So far...it got me where I am... And I am not being an asshole to EVERY customer. I am very selective in my assholebeing. Almost prejudictic... And THANKS Dark! When those cheerleaders are little their skirts are reaching their knees almost. The older they get - the shorter those skirts become! And NO I am not too prudent - I don't mine seeing lean body wrapped into slinky outfit but those cow's boobs and tighs...makes me wanna gag!!! Also when I see cheerleader's competitions of a high level - I don't mind those skirts because all the girls there are FIT!!! And HS girls are NOT!!!

I was watching the Dallas Cleveland game yesterday with a friend. I said something about hair color and he responded "they had hair?" They are plenty fit.

Maybe they didn't understand what your "No Soliciting" sign said since you made it yourself and can't spell past a first grade level... Just saying.

Uh huh... I don't see the problem My dd is almost 14 and her uniform is NOTHING like that. They do have the short skirt but the top is a one piece that comes down and over the skirt. I would have a major issue if she was expected to dress like that picture....

I doubt it. So, according to an article on Daily Mail Mission Texas is now the most overweight city in America. So, I looked up the Mission high school cheerleaders, on the assumption that if there is an epidemic of 200lb cheerleaders going on these days, it should be especially bad in Mission Texas. These girls don't look all that chubby to me though.

The issue to me is not whether cheerleading is a sport. It is why I should donate to send some other person's kid on a trip to...whereever. There was this sad commercial on TV last year..if you lived in Canada you probably saw it..but at the end of it it is like: 1/3 of Canadian families can't afford to put their children in organized sports!! GASP! THE HORROR!! 2/3 of the world can't afford to EAT on a daily basis..so no, i'm not really concerned that some kid doesn't get to play organized hockey!! or cheerleading..
Now if they would like to WORK for money. Around here a lot of them will bag groceries and then you tip (although, they aren't that great at bagging groceries generally)..or collect recyclables or have a car wash...
I generally don't give money to the panhandler on the street for the same reason. I have to work hard for my money - why shouldn't you?

One reply to me from other forum: I am glad you turned them down. I think it appalling that kids are taught to see their hobbies and worse, their trips abroad, to be in the same league (no pun intended) as charities.
viola! Thanks.

For the exact same reason. Notice how the male skaters can do the same spins and flips and whatnot in an outfit that's full length pants and a long sleeve shirt. The ice princesses need to be half naked and have a little skirt that flies up and shows a flash of the panty like bit under it. Nothing sexist there at all... Women's bodies are attractive. And, as a culture we celebrate that, what is wrong with that? We place a value on women looking attractive, cute, etc. What is wrong with that? We like men to look strong and handsome. Is that wrong too?

Agreed.
The massive amounts of body and self esteem issues among young girls would tend to indicate that maybe our celebration, some would call it obsession, with women's looks does indeed have something wrong with it.
It sends girls the message that who they are as a person, their academic attainment, their intelligence, and their personality are all far less important than whether or not they're hot enough to wear a bikini. I'm assuming I don't have to actually explain what's wrong with that besides just stating it?
It would be, but honestly as a society we really don't care that much what a man looks like. Fat guys aren't stigmatized to nearly the same extent that fat women are for example.

Those are some good points. And, i agree that we do go to far in objectifying women. But, yet, on the other hand, i love to see my DD when she is looking "cute". I really enjoy her girly girling up. There is something special and wonderful about a pretty little girl that just isn't the same in the reverse. So, yes, we do place a higher value of female attractiveness and femininity but what is wrong with that?

Well, we place a lower value on men without money as well. An attractive poor women doesn't seem to be judged quite the same as an attractive poor man. A fat rich slob can get all the women he wants.

Other then sending the message to young girls that the only thing that matters is their looks, not a thing.
Probably true, although it seems like our society places a pretty low value an anyone without money regardless of gender.

Allowing and appreciating feminine beauty is not the same thing as saying that is the "only thing" that matters. There is a lot of grey area in there between wanting to be attractive and also having other skills and abilities. I don't know any of DD's friends or her who think they are only about how they look. They are all very accomplished girls in many ways from art, music, sports, academics and on and on.

It's only partially how they value themselves, it's also how they think society values them. Do they think that society values those other traits they have, or do they feel that society places more importance on their physical beauty?

Society values the skills and talents of girls and women. We celebrate and admire girls in sports, band, honor society and on and on.

But how many more girls can identify Kim Kardashian than Hillary Clinton? Or Elena Kagan? (Just a for instance).
Society may value the things you mentioned, but it values appearance (specifically sex appeal) more.

Honestly, do we really celebrate girls in sports, band, and honor society? The parents of those girls certainly do, but I'm not sure that society at large really cares all that much. I certainly don't go watch the local high school debate club, couldn't name even a single kid that's in the honor society, and while I do go watch some of the high school softball games (nationally ranked with 7 straight sectional championships), I'm one of like two dozen people in the stands. The others are all related to one of the players. The local football games (2 sectional championships since 1986) get half the town into the stands.

Well, then you are admitting to be part of the problem. I coach my dd's bball team and i am so impressed with this group of 5th grade girls and their basketball skills.

The girls basketball team in a neighboring town won 2 straight state championships. They were greeted on their return home with the street lined with supporters, honking horns, and a state police escort.

Not at all, I'm one of the two dozen people out there watching the softball games. And possibly the only one who isn't a coach or a parent of one of the players. I coach my daughter's softball team. However, since the girls sports are very sparsely attended, while the boys sports get far more spectators, that indicates to me that society at large really doesn't value female athletes that much.
I don't even watch or follow basketball, but I could probably name at least half a dozen pro male players. I can't name a single pro female player. I doubt I'm alone in that.

Well, you can look at Figure Skating and i have no doubt more people watch women's figure skating. And, does anybody really care about Men's gymnastics? And, you yourself just said you were interested and participating in girls' sports so where is the problem?

Dark, I think part of that is timing When are the football games? When are the varsity basketball games? Usually these are on Friday nights when people are off work. When are most softball and soccer games? Those are usually during the week in the afternoon. In HS, I was on the girls soccer team that went to sections every year. We were a new school so we were the only team winning anything (Football, basketball, etc were atrocious). We still never got any fans coming. Do I think it was because we were women? No, it was because we played in a field with no seating on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon at 330. Hell, our own parents rarely made it because they had to work. If we would have played on a friday night though, we probably would have had a lot more fans,
