It used to be you tried out for cheer leading and only X amount made it. We washed cars and did a lot of grunt work to make money for camp, uniforms, whatever. Now anyone can "buy" their way onto a team which starts at a very young age for some sick reason. I've been accosted by pretty little girls with their hands out for cheer leading money and when I offer to let them wash my car or do something to earn that money instead of soliciting like some hooker, they and their precious mommies, look at me like I've asked them to ruin their manicures. DD talked about it at one time and I flat out refused to let her even consider it. They look and act like streetwalkers.

I wouldn't give $25 to send cheerleaders to the finals. I don't give a damn about cheerleaders. If they were asking me to donate to a food bank, an animal shelter, an abused womens' foundation or cancer treatment for an uninsured kid, I'd give in a heartbeat.

Hmmm...please feel free to withhold your financial contribution because it isn't something you support. While your at it, try not to judge DD, she's an athlete, not a hooker, and her precious Mommy is just going to smile and nod at you. ;D

Thank you zib and welt! I do give out a dollar to 'kids cancer research' etc. when I see those youngsters standing on the streets in hot and cold and rainy weather... My DD just told me when they wanted to go to Florida to finals and they went to ask for money at some store there was a young fella who asked them whats the money for and they yelled 'we want to go to Florida' and his reply was 'so am I'...and since then my DD refused to do that kind of fundraising because she says she totally understood his point being right on money and their point of asking was just...WRONG!

It's probably not a good idea to get on the wrong side of a cheer mom. I don't give a damn about cheer moms. I was the one for years and I stood away from those morons with hidden agenda to live trough their kids because all they did was gossiping and eating pizza while their daughters were sweating there jumping up and down and wanted slice so badly but their moms got it! They are also rude and lazy. Driving kid to cheerleading is their way to get out of the house so they don't have to do cleaning and cooking and they can use the excuse 'I took her to the practice!' I was always wondering if we all were from the same neighborhood and practice was for at least 2 hours 3 times per week...why couldn't they run home and DO something useful instead of munching on McD crap.

Pretty nasty stuff here. Those girls work hard. They are just trying to do something they enjoy. Is there something wrong with that? Sheesh? What a bunch of curmudgeons.

Yep! Kids asking for money to be handed to them is nasty! Seeing those huge girls squeezed into skimpy uniforms is nasty. Seeing their fat non-athletic moms stuffing faces while kids are exersizing is nasty. And please...what they are enjoying... They would enjoy gymnastics as much as they do enjoy cheerleading but cheerleading has this stupid buzz that gymnastic doesn't have... Who had invented this 'sport'? And does it have to be this sexy for such young kids? I am not prudent. I am just hating stupidity in parents. Totally! For Sure! I even got a manicure! Sun! I swear! Is shining up my golden hair! 34? 24? I don't even know the score! Go! Fight! Gee, I hope I look allright? ? SPORT!!! Are you freaking kidding me???

Well, I enjoy our cheerleaders. They help make the games more fun. They liven up the gym and get the crowd cheering and a lot of them do very difficult gymnastics types routines. I cheer any young people making an effort to work at something, enjoy something and improve their lives and the lives of those around them. I see no reason to be nasty to young people and to discourage them and make them feel bitter. You dont' have to give them money if you don't want to. Don't. I didn't say anyone had to do anything. But, it would cost you a THING to tell them sorry you cannot donate today but to wish them well and to tell you appreciate that they are cheering on the local teams and that you hope they have a great season. I guess i really appreciate young people. My kids have friends galore at my house. I am coaching my DD's bball team. I go OUT OF MY WAY to tell these kids how awesome they are and what a great job they are doing and praise them when they are doing good things. I spend MY OWN money to help pay for these kids and the team. That is my choice and i am not saying anyone else has too. But, it doesn't cost anyone a darn thing to speak some words of encouragement to the next generaton.

Taking grandma in her wheelchair to watch my son play basketball or hear my daughter's 4th grade bandconcert is a very meaningful thing.

Well...I th you are mistaking competition for average day game. There is no very difficult gymnastics types routines anywhere during the games! During the games there is 'totally for sure I even got the manicure' and difficult stants are at competitions... An IF your game needs more fun than fans on bleachers - you are at the wrong town girl! Out cheerleaders mostly heard by parents who are standing right next to them and watching their mouthes to understand if it is 'totally for sure I even got the manicure' or 'your team sucks! wear the socks'! because or games are FUN as it is! But of course we are in Philly...

For my own kids, I attend every one of their events, giving constant encouragement. I'll donate money to strangers' kids for charity but not sports related causes; if I decline to donate, I do it politely and wish them good luck in their events. But please, God, when I'm in a wheelchair... do not force me to attend an elementary band concert. That is a special kind of Hell that should only be reserved to the parents of the children participating and death row inmates.

My son played hockey, baseball and soccer. However, cheerleading is not a sport. It's waving around pompoms to entertain the crowd at the slowest and most boring game on earth.

And, at that time she was in her right mind and able to really enjoy it and make those decisions. But, one time, i took the kids to Cedar Point and there was some family pushing Grandma around in the 100 degree day in a wheelchair. I told my kids that if they ever did that to me and took in a wheelchair from the home to an amusement park, that i would come back and haunt them forever!

It isnt' a "sport"? So what? What does that have to do with anything? Being in girl scouts isn't a sport yet they sell cookies. Being in the choir isn't a sport. Lots of things aren't sports but that doesnt' mean they arent fun and enjoyable for kids to do.

Like I said, I only can afford to give to WORTHY causes. Sending cheerleaders to the finals is no more important to me than making sure teenaged boys get to attend ComiCon. If you can give, more power to you. Give as much as you can.

Well, the funny thing is, that a person can actually donate to a food bank AND buy girl scout cookies or give a dollar to a cheerleader. I found that if i give up having buying vera bradley purses, that i am able to spread the love all around.

Actually, i think the cookies are awful. No offense cuz my dd is a girl scout. But, i can buy better cookies at walmart. And, our cheerleaders sell candy bars and do stuff like that. I have never seen any of our our cheerleaders ask anyone for money. They sell stuff just like everyone else does. But, regardless, sorry, i don't get the disdain and contempt for young girls who want to join something and have a bit of fun doing that.

I suppose I could just use a plastic shopping bag, and use the $6 to send an impoverished cheerleader to the finals.

I buy purses at Coach stores ad donate to kids, and to food banks, the hospital, and the SPCA.

I went to Disney for 2 weeks, donated a pint of blood, gave some food and money to the food bank, gave a tithe to the church, bought candy, cookies, nuts, and discount cards from the Scouts, Spanish Club, Girl scouts, boys' basketball, football team, cheerleading and girls' bball tip off tournament. I personally purchased folders, handouts and other things for the team. I cooked meals for my sons' friends who come from some pretty bad home situations. I drove the neighbor's kids to school all week because she just had surgery.
See, there are a lot of things people are a capable of doing and funny that none of those things are mutually exclusive.

So nice you could squeeze in a 2 wk vacation at Disney, what with all the "worthy causes" you were donating to. I'd rather give any spare money I can afford to WORTHY causes - like the Heart & Stroke Foundation (my father was a heart-transplant recipient) - or the Cancer Society - both my DH and SIL were taken by the disease. Or donate my time to the food bank - or reading stories at the Children's Hospital - donating clothes to a Women's Shelter - the list of real worthy causes is endless. My money and time would be far better spent than giving it to a girl to shake her pom-poms.

I think kid activities are worthy causes. These silly Kids will eventually be adults, and we want them to be active and involved as kids because they learn skills such as discipline, teamwork and setting goals when they are involved in activities.
Cheering isn't my thing, but if my DD wanted to cheer, I'd support it.
